Despite her history of activism, Susan Sarandon says she doesn't chase down political films per se -- but that every film she does is political in its own right. "Every film tells you somehow how to be man, or what's funny, or what a system of justice is," she said. "It's only the ones that challenge the status quo that people call political."

Brett Erlich and Ellen Fox review "The Company Men," an ensemble film about corporate layoffs starring Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones, Craig T. Nelson, Chris Cooper and Kevin Costner. Ellen liked the all-too-timely story from writer-director John Wells (of TV's "ER" and "West Wing"), while Brett despaired from too many scenes featuring sad white guys.

“The Company Men” is not among those being bandied about as an Oscar contender. No, that’s reserved for films like “Black Swan,” a diet film about ballet. Yet “The Company Men” may be the most important film of the year and certainly the most real.
It is about what’s happening to America’s economy and it is as frightening as your last unemployment check. It is about the way corporate executives care only about stock prices (and by extension their bonuses), employees be damned. And, most important, it is about those who are suddenly let go, their lives shattered.

I took another look at Tommy Lee Jones’ directorial debut ‘The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada’ at the weekend - I was struck on my first viewing three years ago at the level of craft and understanding of how to tell a story, not to mention the meaning of the story it’s trying to tell: one of how America (or any other protagonist) needs to grow up. This time round, I was even more astonished - this film is so knowing about human relationships, loneliness, the power of economics to kill or liberate, and so delicate in its handling of what could otherwise have been either a horror film or a zombie comedy.
