A Nightmare on Elm Street is released on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK today, to celebrate we got to talk exclusively to the man behind the mask, Jackie Earle Haley:
Q - Did it not sink in until you had the role, how big a deal it would be to play such a massive pop culture icon?
It was a daunting notion. Especially when one guy really owns the role. He’s been this character for not just a few films, but a couple of generations. He’s a wonderful actor, he’s done an incredible job in creating Freddy Krueger. So that’s kind of daunting to step into those shoes, but you know while I was considering there was this little voice inside my head saying “How can you NOT play Freddy Krueger?”
Q - So how did you go about preparing to play Freddy?
First I tried to get into the mindset of a serial killer. It didn’t take me too long to realise that I was going the wrong way and what I needed to embrace was that this is a campfire story and that this character is mythological. Once I started to get that it was incredibly freeing. That’s what this is, you know? It’s a great genre and for some reason we love having Freddy chasing us down, so that we can then giggle to get … it’s a bizarre genre.
Q - It’s very cathartic. To have that fear and then the release when it’s over and you have that giggle.
That’s what makes this guy different. We want him to come after us and then to have that giggle when he does.

An occasionally delightful concoction, the sum of “Louis” however, somehow doesn’t quite amount to more than the enchantment of its individual parts. Conceptually clever and executed with polish and flair, the film fuses the figure of a six-year-old Louis Armstrong, just beginning his relationship with the horn that will alter the course of musical history, with a fanciful Storyville tale of sparring bordellos and the devious campaigning tactics of a New Orleans politician (Jackie Earle Haley). An occasionally delightful concoction, the sum of “Louis” however, somehow... more

Freddy’s back, and the Cinefantastique Horror, Fantasy & Science Fiction Podcast has him in its sights. Is the new A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET a dreamscape of unspeakable terrors, or is it a big snooze guaranteed to induce micronaps? What’s up with those dour teens? Why are their parents so oblivious? And how big a distinction should be make between the old ”child killer” Krueger and the new ”child molester” version? These and other questions will be pondered, ruminated upon, delved into, and dissected by Dan Persons, Lawrence French, and Steve Biodrowski.
