You probably had a fascination with dinosaurs and fossils as a child. Learning about them as an adult can be just as riveting, especially when you have experts in the field blogging about the latest breakthroughs.

Four baby pythons escaped from a container aboard a Quantas passenger plane in Australia, leading to a fruitless search and two cancelled flights.
Twelve of the Stimson pythons were being transported in a bag inside a plastic foam box with air holes. However as the flight landed it was discovered that 4 of the reptiles had gone missing!
As It wasn't known whether the snakes somehow escaped outside after the plane landed, or if they were still on board somewhere, the aircraft had to be fumigated.Four baby pythons escaped from a container aboard a Quantas passenger plane in... more

An exclusively female species of ant has been found in South American, they reproduce a-sexually by cloning their queen... (I'm not sure how the details of this work...)
This telegraph article says: "Reproduction without sex is fairly common in the ant world, but the Mycocepurus smithii is the first known to be a male-free species. The phenomenon takes the stress out of finding a mate and may help keep the peace in colonies, the scientists believe."
Apparently the scientists investigating this species haven't found the genetic mutations normally expected from a-sexual reproduction either... so looks like it's working well for them all round.
I rather like the men I know and don't necessarily want to wipe them out... but maybe one day this is what will happen. Maybe this is why men historically have had to keep women 'down'! Incase we do away with them!An exclusively female species of ant has been found in South American, they reproduce... more

Cyclists who took part in this trial recorded significantly faster times if they rinsed their mouths at regular intervals with an energy drink throughout the event.
Chemical receptors in the mouth respond to carbohydrates in the drinks by sending signals to the brain that make exercise feel easier.
The Journal of Physiology reports that cyclists were on average 2-3% faster when given the sports drinks, even though they did not ingest them.
This study builds on what is called the "central governor hypothesis", which asserts that it is not the muscles, heart or lungs that limit a person's performance, but the brain.Cyclists who took part in this trial recorded significantly faster times if they... more

Scientists have identified a class of nerve fibres in the skin which specifically send pleasure messages. However people have to be stroked at a certain speed - 4-5cm per second - to activate the pleasure sensation.
If the stroke is faster (or slower) than the optimum speed, the touch was not pleasurable and the nerve fibres were not activated.
Furthermore, these the C-tactile nerve fibres are only present on hairy skin and are not found on the hand.
Professor Francis McGlone says this is likely to be a deliberate "design":
"We believe this could be Mother Nature's way of ensuring that mixed messages are not sent to the brain when it is in use as a functional tool."Scientists have identified a class of nerve fibres in the skin which specifically send... more

The broadcaster Sir David Attenborough has become a patron of Optimum Population Trust, a group seeking to cut the growth in human population.
They advocate cutting the UK population by 0.25% a year and have launched a "Stop at Two" online pledge to encourage couples to limit their family's size.
Population is a hot area of debate, with libertarians and some religious groups vehemently opposing measures by governments to influence individual fertility.
David on the other hand is quoted as saying "I've never seen a problem that wouldn't be easier to solve with fewer people, or harder, and ultimately impossible, with more."
What do you think? Is it selfish to have more than two children? The broadcaster Sir David Attenborough has become a patron of Optimum Population... more
