I would like to have some input from my friends here at Current about a show presently on the Weather Channel. The show is called "Iceberg Hunters" and it documents the escapades of the Richards family of Newfoundland. They have always lived off the ocean by fishing, but in recent years they have turned their attention to destroying existing icebergs "for money." They search out "suitable" icebergs and fire a rifle shot into that once-huge iceberg, cutting off chunks of it to haul into their "fishing boat" to sell to some unnamed "Bottled Water" company as the freshest, purest available souce of water. And, of course, like the Richards family, that "unnamed company" does this for money.
So while we are all here fighting the loss of ice in the Arctic from the greed of the oil industry, there is now a need to call a halt to the equally disturbing destruction of existing icebergs for the Bottled Water industry. Is there no end to the continual attack on our planet? I'm not sure whether to praise TheWeatherChannel for bringing this horror to light, or chastise them for what could well be a wake-up call to other fishermen to increase this activity.
Fisherman have long been bemoaning the fact that their fishing hauls are not what they used to be. Is it any wonder? Overfishing by the mega-fishing-industries caused this decline in that industry, so now it's just a matter of time before they take what's left of the existing icebergs and hasten the destruction of this planet before we have even gotten cooperation from the oil industry to stop their dirty deeds. Are we fighting a losing battle? I hope not.
The above image represents the smallest of the icebergs these "iceberg hunters" look for when they seek to destroy them. The taking of this ice is - the Richardses lament - "forcing" them to travel further and further [and for longer hours] into the Arctic to find suitable icebergs which are getting harder and harder to find. If there is one thing we don't need it is a family of idiots who value the dollar over the preservation of the globe.

Are we fighting a losing battle? What can one assume if the ice that does not get a chance to even melt is stolen from the Arctic?
While this program only follows this one family, I have to wonder if there are not more fishermen doing the same thing. And is there any way to find out who this bottled water company is that would pay such a price for this destruction?
