The Herb Star Anise and Avian Flu-[no date]

The Herb Star Anise

Apart from its properties in reducing the effects of Bird Flu (Avian Flu), Star Anise has been used in oriental cooking for thousands of years. One of its main uses in oriental cooking is as a flavouring for duck dishes. It is also occasionally used as seasoning in Christmas cooking. Star Anise is also widely used in arts and crafts materials.

The herb Star Anise is the little egg-shaped fruits in the plants. The fruits are dried when semi-ripe. The taste of the herb is liquorice in flavour and it is very pungent.

Currently Star Anise is a native of Southern China and Vietnam. However only the Chinese variety is useful in the treatment of Bird Flu. It is best suited to tropical conditions.

The Latin name for Star Anise is Illicium verum, an evergreen tree of the Magnoliaceae family.

Note that Star Anise is similar to Anise but not the same. Star Anise has a much stronger liquorice flavour compared to anise. Kings can be quoted as follows on the medicinal uses of Star Anise. "Both the seeds and oil of star-anise possess the stimulant, diuretic, carminative, and slightly anodyne properties of anise. Locally applied and internally administered, they have been used for abdominal pains, particularly when associated with flatus, and in bronchitis, and locally alone in earache and rheumatic complaints. Oil of star-anise is largely employed to impart a flavour to spirits, especially in France, Germany and Italy."

Star Anise was introduced into Europe in the 17th Century where it was used in baked goods and in the making of fruit jams. More famously it was used as one of the main flavourings of the liqueurs Pernod an Anisette.

The Star Anise tree grows to about 2.5 m tall (8 foot) and grows best in an acid soil. The soil should also be water-retentive because Star Anise does not tolerate shortage of water well. Anise prices soar in H1N1 battle-11.24.09

Speculation that aniseed, also known as anise seeds, could combat the H1N1 virus has sparked a run on aniseed in Ras Al Khaimah in recent weeks, according to sources at the Emirate's Department of Economic Development.

And in a scam that is as old as the Emirate's sands, companies importing the spice into the UAE raised wholesale prices from Dh15 per kilo before the outbreak of swine flu to between Dh25 and Dh30, Nojoud Ahmed Al Motawaa, the DED's Head of Consumer Protection, said in a statement to Emirates Business yesterday.

Deputy Director-General Hamad bin Arhama Al Shamsi at the DED said the prices, which are set by the market, were influenced by similar increases internationally. A stream of phone calls from irate consumers protesting the increased prompted the department to investigate spice and nut shops at the Al Kuwaiti and Al Muairidh markets and check bills of purchase.

Aniseed, which is used in the preparation of some Arabic sweets, has long been thought to have therapeutic properties and believers in wholistic medicine boil about a teaspoon of aniseed per teacup to make a special hot tea called Yansoon.

"There is no proof to suggest that aniseed is beneficial in treating flu caused by the H1N1 virus," Dr Elhadi El Tayeb Abbas, Senior Consultant Nephrologist and Head of the Internal Medicine Department at RAK Hospital told the newspaper. And while Yansoon tea might work as a decongestant and thus offer some relief, he cautioned against believing it to be a cure-all.

"The treatment of the virus can only be achieved through antiviral medications and there are two such medicines known so far. However, if the spice can help in treating symptoms of other flus, then it can be used for symptomatic treatment which is different from being cured from the virus which can be achieved only by the antiviral medication such as Tamiflu."

Adding to the confusion are reports that shikimic acid, made from the Chinese spice star anise, is the primary ingredient in the antiviral drug Tamiflu, one of the key drugs in the battle against swine flu.

Even so, Dr Abbas said, it is vital consumers seek medical advice instead of relying on herbal star anise remedies. "Whether or not shikimic acid is an ingredient in Tamiflu, the fact is that Tamiflu has been proven to work. Using one of the ingredients that make up the drug will not deliver the same effects and, on the contrary, could prove toxic."

H1N1 Headline Tracker-How The Vaccine is Helping

Until September China had 1 confirmed H1N1 death out of just over 16,000 confirmed cases. Meanwhile, the U.S. CDC reported over 7,000 confirmed cases and over 500 confirmed deaths. Due to delays in vaccines production wide scale inoculations didn't get under way till AFTER September. Now headlines report that "new" testing reveals that there "were probably" more deaths than previously reported, again prior to mass vaccinations. Now deaths around the World are "skyrocketing". Included in this presentation is a report "Doctor reviewed article" by the AMDA stating that H1n1 spread so quickly because it "is new to humans". Here is a little summary of death tolls:
U.S.- 4,000+
European Union (27 Nations)- 500+
China- 325+

Is America that good. Can we test better? Or are we suffering more due to some sort of medical industry incompetence? Is the EU, 27 collective nations with more people than the U.S.'s 320 million, death rate really less than 20% of America's over 4,000? People, the U.S. has had about 50% of the entire World's confirmed H1N1 deaths. Out of about 52,000 global confirmed cases, the U.S. has had over 20,000 in less than a couple months.

Please research the 1976 U.S. H1N1 (swine flu) pandemic outbreak. 40 million were vaccinated in the U.S.. The U.S. Government paid $millions$ of tax payers' dollars to a company for the vaccine units, then the U.S. public bought them from "retailers" [doubling cost of each unit] paying with wages earned from labor, adverse side effects resulted in legal damages against the U.S. government for over $3.5 billion [also paid for by the taxpayer], the corporation only made $$$. Don't let history repeat it self. I think it is important to realize that the media has continued to present H1N1 like it is "new to humans". When is it important that that is a direct LIE, not a mistake. Why don't the 2 previous H1N1 outbreaks matter enough to report them. Is the U.S. media just making a mistake, big or small, or are they misleading the public.

China vaccinates and the death rate jumps up from 13-325 in 50 days.
All headlines relating to China are in timeline order. I was unable to locate earlier reports of the global death rate that recorded china as having 1 death.

I believe that making profit off this is more important to the government officials, the people elected, than human health. I believe that a conspired attempt to distort the historical and medical information concerning H1N1 is jeopardizing human life. I believe this is a sick example of the U.S. system of Capitalism, same as the Wars. People should die for profit, and be willing to do it too.

Canada: No more H1N1 deaths than from seasonal flu 11/20/09

While headlines decry the rising H1N1 death toll, news is emerging that there have been no more deaths from this pandemic than from seasonal flu.
A November 20 article on canada.com reported Canada's Chief Health Officer, Dr. David Butler-Jones, as saying that, "the mortality rate from this (H1N1) is no worse than seasonal flu."
A November 20 article in the Ottawa Citizen notes that all but one vaccination clinic are being closed because peak demand has passed.
An article in the November 20 Vancouver Sun indicates that the second wave seems to be easing off in Alberta.
An article in the November 20 Edmonton Sun quoted Dr. Gerry Predy, senior medical officer of health for Alberta Health Services, as saying, "I think we haven't seen the worst in terms of the number of severe illnesses and other people who will require more critical care."
As of November 19, H1N1 appears to have claimed the lives of 250 Canadians, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada. In any other year, between 750 and 2500 Canadians die of the flu in a year.
The numbers are similar in the US (where about 4000 have died this year rather than the usual 36,000 annual flu-related deaths) and globally.
So why is H1N1 being called a pandemic? In fact, the flu outbreak every year is considered at least a level 1 pandemic.
What are the differences between the H1N1 pandemic and the usual seasonal flu pandemic? The primary differences seem to be three-fold: H1N1 hit earlier than regular flu season, there's been more activity in the northern hemisphere than usual, and while the regular flu hits elderly people with the highest mortality rate, H1N1 is infecting largely young people.
Why is this flu impacting young people hardest? One theory is that the last time the swine flu hit was in the 1960s, so people who lived through that have antibodies while younger people do not.
