The 2009 Chase for the Cup begins Sept 20 in New Hampshire. The seeding of the twelve drivers is based on number of races won, not the final championship points following the regular season. Heartbreak for Matt Kenseth who was 12th coming into the final regular season race at Richmond, Va. Also, Kyle Busch missed the chase by a scant 8 points, the closest margin since the new system was implemented in 2004.
Drivers making it to the chase, in order of final points totals:
Tony Stewart (Stewart Haas Racing #14 Chevrolet)
Jimmie Johnson (Hendrick Motorsports #48 Chevrolet)
Jeff Gordon (Hendrick Motorsports #24 Chevrolet)
Denny Hamlin (Joe Gibbs Racing #11 Toyota)
Carl Edwards (Roush Fenway Racing #99 Ford)
Kasey Kahne (Richard Petty Motorsports #9 Dodge)
Kurt Busch (Penske Racing #2 Dodge)
Juan Pablo Montoya (Earnhardt Ganassi Racing #42 Chevrolet)
Ryan Newman (Stewart Haas Racing #39 Chevrolet)
Mark Martin (Hendrick Motorsports #5 Chevrolet)
Greg Biffle (Roush Fenway Racing #16 Ford)
Brian Vickers (Red Bull Racing #83 Toyota)

The race for the chase has never been this wide open. Who will be in after Richmond? Who's going to be that driver in 13th place? 13th place isn't really a slouch either since that team gets $1,000,000 for being 13th.The race for the chase has never been this wide open. Carl Edwards flips into the retaining fence headed to the checkered flag. He was leading at the time, but when pressured for the lead, Carl attempted a block and was bumped by Brad Keselowski which sent him across the top of Ryan Newman's car and careening toward the fans. Luckily the retaining fence and all other safety measures worked very well and only seven people suffered minor injuries. This could have been much worse. Check around 4:18 to see the fence do its job. Amazing.
After the wreck, some other weird things happened. Carl emerged from his car, which was on fire, and ran across the finish line, a-la Ricky Bobby. Also, Keselowski's mentor, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. congratulated Brad on his finish by bumping him, after which Keselowski turned right and across the front of Kyle Busch's car, which spun Keselowski out.
Congratulations to Brad Keselowski for his first Cup win.Carl Edwards flips into the retaining fence headed to the checkered flag. He was... more
