The Lord Mayor of Melbourne is considering street busker auditions to quailify for a buskers licence. This could be looked at as a form of censorship or control over who or what is played in the streets.
Perhaps the Lord Mayor has not been in Melbourne long enough, but bad (and good)busking has always been a part of Melbournes city culture.
There was once a homeless guy who banged sticks on a bucket for coins, or the old guy who wobbled his jaw everytime he blew into his saxophone. They were usually on Burke Street between Russell Street and Swanston Street. I never knew their names or what happened to them. They were part of the Melbourne scene, despite how good or bad they may have been. Had they been forced to audition, would they have qualified?? Hard to say for sure, I would guess not likely.
If a street busker is really bad, don't donate any money. If they are that bad, they will eventually get the hint and move on or improve.
All I ask of the mayor is not to rob someone of a chance to perform before they start. Let the public decide if a busker is bad or not.
