Gestalt is a library from MIX Online Labs that allows you to build web pages with Ruby, Python and XAML directly in your HTML. You can write web pages using any of your favorite page authoring tools and deploy your pages by copying them to any web server.
So what in the heck does this have to do with Microsoft? It's another example how the company is finally turning to play nicely with others. Or let's hope so.Gestalt is a library from MIX Online Labs that allows you to build web pages with... more

Engadget:
"A day earlier than expected, Microsoft has launched its third edition of Silverlight and its SDK. As Ars Technica notes, some of the bigger improvements on the user side are GPU hardware acceleration and new codec support including H.264, AAC, and MPEG-4. If you're looking to give it a spin, there's a Smooth Streaming demo available that, as the name suggests, does a pretty good job of streaming HD video with little stutter, even when skipping around. If you've got Firefox 2, Internet Explorer 6, Safari 3 or anything fresher, hit up the read link to get the update."
---------------------------------------
Ars Technica:
"Here are the minimal system requirements (Mac PowerPCs are not supported as of version 2):
*Personal Computer running Windows: X86 or x64 500-megahertz (MHz) or higher processor with 128-megabytes (MB) of RAM
*Mac OS 10.4.8+ (Intel-based): Intel Core Duo 1.83-gigahertz (GHz) or higher processor with 128-MB of RAM
There are thousands of new APIs and hundreds of new features for this version, but the really important ones can be broken down into four points:
*Media: GPU hardware acceleration, new codec support (H.264, AAC, MPEG-4), raw bitstream Audio/Video API, and improved logging for media analytics
*Graphics: GPU Acceleration and hardware compositing, perspective 3D, bitmap and pixel API, pixel shader effects, and Deep Zoom improvements
*Application development: Deep linking, navigation and SEO, improved text quality, multi-touch support, 60+ controls available, and library caching support
*Data: Data-binding improvements, validation error templates, server data push improvements, binary XML networking support, and multi-tier REST data support
In terms of streaming, Microsoft says Silverlight 3 brings "high-definition video in full-screen mode, with stutter-free live and on-demand video" to the table. There's also Smooth Streaming (demo), which allows one to start playing an HD video at any point in time, instantaneously. Version 3 allows developers to create Web applications that can exist outside the browser. How does it work? Open a browser page. Launch the Silverlight application. Close the browser. The Silverlight program lives on.
At the time of posting, Silverlight.net still talks about Silverlight 2 and Silverlight 3 Beta but the webpage should be updated soon. The Silverlight 3 Beta was also released early in March 2009 (Microsoft detailed the release at MIX09).
Silverlight 2 was released in October 2008 and Silverlight 1 was released in September 2007. Silverlight 1 was very much focused on streaming video, whereas version 2 was aimed at RIAs, but version 3 expands on both areas."
---------------------------------------
Silverlight gets progressively better. It's nice to see microsoft focus on forward development as opposed to just trying to build a flash clone. Also great to see how well Silverlight 3 works on MacOS.

Microsoft has launched the world's first multi-layered ‘deep zoom' viral game.
IT Insecurity - created by MRM Worldwide - uses Microsoft's Silverlight Deep Zoom technology, which is capable of producing multi-layered ‘picture-in-picture effect contained in a single image'.
The game targets IT professionals and software developers and challenges them to spot a series of commonplace IT security faults and errors in photos of office settings. Once a security fault is correctly identified, players reach the next levels and challenges by zooming into a hidden portal in each photo.
Even if you're not a techie/IT nerd, it's worth checking out this game and playing around with the cool Deep Zoom feature!Microsoft has launched the world's first multi-layered ‘deep zoom'... more
