One of the more provocative critiques to come from conservatives concerning the appointment of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court has been the charge that her nomination is racial politics at its most cynical. But in the past, Republicans were eager to play up the diversity of their own nominees.
She is "an affirmative action pick," declared Pat Buchanan on MSNBC's Hardball. "Clearly the president was down to four choices, all of them woman, and he picked the Hispanic." Earlier in the day, Rush Limbaugh ramped up the rhetoric even further, proclaiming Sotomayor "a reverse racist" who was appointed by "the greatest living example of a reverse racist" -- Obama. One of the more provocative critiques to come from conservatives concerning the... more

Barack Obama's selection of Sonia Sotomayor to replace David Souter as Supreme Court justice has already set off a fierce response from conservatives and the Republican Party. Sotomayor would be the first Hispanic justice and only the third woman to serve on the nation’s highest court. The Republicans are sure to attack Sotomayor for various reasons even though she was first appointed to the bench by George H.W. Bush and confirmed by some of the more rabidly conservative Senators, including Jesse Helms and Rick Santorum. Glenn Greenwald lays out some of the likely attacks here. But what is the significance of Obama’s decision?

President Barack Obama tapped federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court on Tuesday, officials said, making her the first Hispanic in history picked to wear the robes of a justice.

Administration officials say Sotomayor would bring more judicial experience to the Supreme Court than any justice confirmed in the past 70 years.
A formal announcement was expected at midmorning.
Obama had said publicly he wanted a justice who combined intellect and empathy — the ability to understand the troubles of everyday Americans...

President Barack Obama is considering more than six contenders for the Supreme Court, a list dominated by women and Hispanics, including judges and leaders from own his administration who have never donned a judicial robe.
Among those under consideration are Solicitor General Elena Kagan, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and U.S. Appeals Court judges Sonia Sotomayor and Diane Pamela Wood. California Supreme Court Justice Carlos Moreno is also under review by Obama.
Obama is likely before month's end to name a nominee to replace Souter, who is retiring when the court term ends this summer. He is part of the court's liberal wing, and his replacement by the new Democratic president is not expected to change the high court's ideological balance.President Barack Obama is considering more than six contenders for the Supreme Court,... more
