Randall Munroe from XKCD.com, who created a very popular, just-for-fun, pseudo-scientific ‘Map of Online Communities’ in 2007, has revamped his previous infographic. The new 2010 edition, called the ‘Updated Map of Online Communities,’ reflects (among other information) data from spring and summer 2010.
“Communities rise and fall,” writes Munroe, “and total membership numbers are no longer a good measure of a community’s current size and health. This updated map uses size to represent total social activity in a community – that is, how much talking, playing, sharing, or other socializing happens there.”
The 2010 estimates “are based on the bet numbers I could find, but involved a great deal of guesswork, statistical inference, random sampling, nonrandom sample, a 20,000 cell spreadsheet, emailing, cajoling, tea-leaf reading, goat sacrifices, and gut instinct (i.e. making things up),” Munroe explains.
Indeed, seismic shifts have occurred among social networks since 2007. Facebook’s presence has grown to become the dominant feature on the updated social map. MySpace, on the other hand, is quite tiny and difficult to locate

Twitter is planning to roll out its own official Tweet Button this week for sharing articles on websites and counting how many times a URL has been shared, according to the Mashable.
Although similar buttons are already available for sites, they are created by third-party services. Twitter is hoping that its official button will be the most accurate yet, offering precise numbers of those who have retweeted articles online.

Seattle’s homeless encampment (dubbed “Nickelsville” after Seattle’s mayor) is unlike anything I have ever experienced. Sure, it’s a tent city. But it is also a community in every sense of the word. But, unlike most communities, Nickelsville is at the mercy of the city of Seattle. Already this year, Nickelsville has been bulldozed seven times and forced to relocate. When I was there, they had been in the same location for ten days straight (a record). At their last location, they were only there four days before being forced to move.
If you think it’s hard to remain cheerful when you’re constantly being uprooted, you’re right. Which is why I found James so interesting. When I met him, he was building a kitchen table out of shipping pallets. Although he moved here from Jackson, Mississippi looking for work, James was still unemployed when we spoke. If not for Nickelsville, he believes he’d be up living under a bridge.
I am so happy to tell you that James did find work the day after this video was filmed. He found a job working as a forklift operator (and he didn’t even have to move to Alaska… you’ll have to watch video to smooth that one out!).
This is just the first in a series of interview with residents of Nickelsville. If you’d like to learn more about the this tent city community, take a look at this Whrrl story. http://homelessness.change.org/blog/view/image_of_the_week_welcome_to_nickelsville

I am typing this at the front desk of a homeless shelter where I am temping for the day. For the most part I have been unemployed since November, 07. Hard to imagine I’ve lasted 19 months! Crazy! I did have two jobs during that period both only lasting three months. I lost my house to foreclosure two months ago and I literally have lived without an income since the middle of March. As God as my witness my fridge only has a few bottles of water and some mayo - that’s it! If it was not for the people who network with me on Twitter and Facebook I don’t even want to think about where I’d be. It still slams my mind that I exist right now only because of the generous hearts who follow me via social media.
Here is the deal. The world is a mess and if I think about it long enough I’ll go nuts. I have a choice: I can get depressed or I can take action to help others. Twice in my life I chased money and I failed. When your priority is helping other people you can only succeed! I cannot help the people in NY or Florida but I can help the hurting directly in front of me. In addition, I can hopefully show the nonprofit world it does not take huge marketing budgets to affect real change. Be real and tell a good story, social media will do the rest!
THANK YOU social media for saving my life and helping me to help others!
