The Thai film "Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives" (Yep, that is the full title) has won the 2010 Palme d'Or at the close of the Cannes Film Festival.
Directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, the film tells a story of a dying man who gets a visit from his late wife and missing son. "Another Year" was the favourite to win at the festival, but went home empty handed. Other winners included Juliette Binoche winning Best Actress for "Copie Conforme", "Poetry" won best screenplay and Javier Bardem & Elio Germano shared the best actor award.

Director Park Chan-wook may have invented a new genre with "Thirst," his film about a priest turned bloodsucker who doesn't like to kill.
The movie combines horror, suspense, social satire and humor in the story of a man of faith transformed into a vampire by a medical experiment gone wrong.
If pushed, Park calls the film "a vampire romance." But he doesn't like labels.
"I didn't set out to make a vampire film that would infuse fresh new blood into the genre," Park said through an interpreter. "I didn't want to make a completely new vampire film. I wanted to make a completely new film with priests in it."

"Thirst," co-produced by Universal Pictures, is the first Korean film made with Hollywood backing.
The central character's faith in God makes "Thirst" the story of a spiritual struggle. Priest Sang-hyung (Song Kang-ho), experiences a crisis of faith and morality when he discovers he must drink human blood to survive...

One look at this film clip and others at: http://storytellertrailers.blogspot.com/2009/05/das-weie-band-white-ribbon.html will demonstrate why Michael Hanekes' brilliant film took Cannes top prize this year. There are other clips at the link, but this one is my favorite, showing the incredible black and white cinematography and the meticulous attention to detail that illustrated a story described as a "fascism parable."
