“Prince of Broadway” is a very small film, even by indie standards. Director Sean Baker, presumably out of financial necessity, used largely non-professional actors with limited range. The story is tiny, whatever the opposite of universal is. And the cinematography and sound are largely uneven.
Yet the film is compelling, and it is easy to see why it attracted the attention of Lee Daniels -- it’s officially “Lee Daniels Presents the Prince of Broadway” -- the award winning producer/director of “Precious.” It is centered in the same milieu as his film, an underclass environment most folks are rarely exposed to.“Prince of Broadway” is a very small film, even by indie standards.... more

Lee Daniels' torture/ghetto porn has won everyone over, save for a few cynical idiots who refuse to see his film on principal. Especially after having sit through Shadowboxer and The Woodsman. But as the Golden Globes overlooked him for a director nod, the reason to see Precious remain herself (actress Gabourey Sidibe) and Mo'nique's performance as her abusive mother.

In this exclusive audio interview Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson talks about the upcoming Academy Awards with openly gay Filmmaker Stu Maddux and Vanessa Domico, Founder and President of Outcast Films, a distribution and production company which is dedicated to the fair and equal representation of media made by or about our LGBT community. Lee Daniels has become the first openly gay African American director to receive a nomination for “Precious” and Tom Ford’s “A Single Man” has also been nominated for Best Film which received a combined 7 Oscar nominations for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards to be aired this Sunday at 8PM on ABC. When asked what he thought about mainstream Hollywood’s representation of our LGBT community, Maddux stated, “I think we’re doing better. You know there’s always room for improvement. You look back ten years ago and this is a question you wouldn’t even be asking me. I think “Precious” and “A Single Man” are really important films. The fact that we have two Best Picture nominations by openly gay folks, I get a lot of encouragement as a filmmaker from that.” When asked about casting actors in gay roles, Domico stated, “I remember the day when no straight actor actually wanted to take a gay role because they would be forever cast as a gay man and not able to get anymore roles. It seems it’s just the opposite now.” For The Full List of 2010 Oscar Nominees
Jarrett Barrios President of The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) had this to say about the nominations for Lee Daniels “Precious” & Tom Ford’s “A Single Man”, “These films tell inclusive and diverse stories of our community which grow awareness understanding of the lives of gay & transgender people.” OUTTAKE VOICES™ will be on the Red Carpet covering the New York City GLAAD Media Awards on March 13th.

The Academy held its traditional luncheon for this year’s Oscar nominees at the Beverly Hilton – and what better opportunity for this sometime-actress to ask the world’s best actors about… acting.
Unlike Brett’s experience at the Oscar Nominations ceremony, it was pretty easy for me to snag a third row seat between a Japanese reporter and a freelancer for BET.
Yes! At my very first Oscar luncheon press conference, I, Ellen Fox, was going to geek out and gather the pearls of wisdom from what I saw as an impromptu Master Class – and for that, Woody Harrelson, I do apologize. First up was Gabourey Sidibe, who immediately loosened thing up by sassing:
After sharing that her role as a sexually-abused teen in Precious has inspired many people to confide in her, she was asked which of her scenes from the film she’d like shown at the Oscars:
Ah! Proof that Sidibe’s knack for humor is what saved Precious from becoming the downer we were expecting it to be. Then we swung from Sidibe's charm to the arrival of Certified Movie Star, Sandra Bullock. In person, she comes across way more savvy and Type-A (like her character in The Proposal) than America’s Sweetheart. I was surprised how candid she was talking about the business end of show biz:
Lee Daniels, director of Precious, was a love: emotional when fielding Frenchy questions about the power of art and ebullient when lauding the “bad-ass” actresses who brought the film’s classroom scenes to life:
Vera Farmiga looked the frickin’ Hollywood knockout in a blue dress, updo and red lipstick! There's talk of Madonna directing her in the role of Wallis Simpson. Here’s how she responded to my question about playing Up in the Air’s frequently frisky flyer, Alex:
Carey Mulligan popped in with a golden pixie cut a la Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby. She seemed relaxed but kept herself in check:
Jeff Bridges strolled in and the room, and probably the world, smiled. When I asked how he was able to make Crazy Heart’s country singer Bad Blake so toxic but so likeable, the word “adorable” just popped out, I swear!
Now, here’s what happened to Woody Harrelson when I decided to ask him about craft.
Now who wants Burrito?
