Stephen Colbert sat down with National Geographic Explorer-In-Residence and author Sylvia Earle to discuss her book, The World Is Blue, which is about how vital ocean health is to the fate of the planet. She promptly tells Stephen that he moves like a dolphin, and then they move on to a pressing topic that vexes many who want to eat sustainably: what kind of seafood should people eat?

A group of civilly-disobedient hemp farmers and business leaders were arrested Tuesday morning while digging up the lawn to plant industrial hemp seeds at the headquarters of the Drug Enforcement Administration.
David Bronner, the president of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, a more than 60-year-old company that does tens of millions of dollars of business annually, was among those arrested.
Bronner buys the hemp used in his soaps from Canadian farmers. He was arrested outside the DEA museum, which shares space with the headquarters.
"Our kids are going to come to this museum and say, 'My God. Your generation was crazy. What the hell is wrong with you people?'" he said as Arlington County Police handcuffed him and walked him to a waiting car.

On Friday at The Society Of Environmental Journalists conference, Al Gore got caught up in the increasingly common "town hall" moment with independent filmmaker Phelim McAleer. McAleer is making a documentary titled "Not Evil Just Wrong," which will attempt to debunk global warming by labeling such concerns "hysteria." McAleer starts the video stating he's going to ask Gore "tough questions," and during the Q & A starts aggressively questioning Gore about inconsistencies in An Inconvenient Truth and whether he accepts the British High Court's ruling that the film contains errors. McAleer goes on to badger Gore about polar bear statistics until he's asked to stop and then his mike is cut.

Salazar said at a media briefing that 17 parcels were approved for drilling and eight rejected. But no decision has been made on the fate of the majority of the disputed lands – 52 parcels totaling 69,373 acres. He said more work needs to be done to determine if those lands qualify for oil and gas leasing.
The Bush administration's decision to offer the land for drilling drew fire from environmentalists and historic preservationists who said drilling might harm nearby parks and other protected lands.

Salazar was condemned by the oil industry for scrapping the leases weeks after taking office, but all the drilling parcels had already been delayed by a federal lawsuit that still is not fully resolved.Salazar said at a media briefing that 17 parcels were approved for drilling and eight... more

The Daily Show criticized the cap-and-trade bill put forth by the Democrats because it completely appeases the companies who created the problem in the first place. Stewart notes that "Democratic leaders are touting a plan that would limit emissions with a system of pollution permits, then give those polluters years worth of those permits for free."
One thing you can always count on though: even this is too strict for Republicans to support. The Daily Show criticized the cap-and-trade bill put forth by the Democrats because it... more

Paul Watson dropped out of Greenpeace because he felt they weren’t doing enough to protect whales from fleets hunting in supposedly protected seas. He founded the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, and over the years has become the bane of whalers — Japanese in particular — by employing confrontational tactics that start at stink bombs (did somebody have a bad experience in high school?), run through fouling props, and don’ t rule out rammings, if necessary. Are they controversial? Well, Greenpeace doesn’t like dealing with them. Does it make for a riveting documentary? Yup, no question.
In AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD, director Dan Stone (exec producer of Animal Planet’s WHALE WARS, which also focuses on Sea Shepherd) follows Watson and forty-six volunteers as they track down and challenge a fleet of Japanese whalers hunting in the protected waters of the Antarctic — the “edge of the world” mentioned in the title. With two ships, one built to handle the treacherous, icy waters but not capable of much speed, the other fast enough but lacking the ruggedness; a bunch of amateurs for a crew; and tracking equipment that’s largely a notch up from a game of Marco Polo, Watson dares to take on ships larger and more formidable, and Stone has found the material for a dramatic, beautifully photographed demonstration of how some people are willing to risk their lives to protect an endangered species.
I was able to talk to Stone and his cinematographer, James Joyner. They were willing to clue me in on why one shouldn’t necessarily trust a Japanese vessel labeled “Research,” and how there are few safe ports in the world for those who would entertain extreme measures to come to the aid of the dwindling whale population.

Whether you are cresting the peak of a majestic volcano or walking on a city street, there are immense amounts of heat beneath your feet – enough to provide all the energy the human population will ever need. Oh OH. We need some legislation...or do we? Here's what "scientists" were saying in 1974 - notice later in the article how they were going to "fix" global cooling......yes, by triggering global warming! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Isn't science fun.
From the article:
As they review the bizarre and unpredictable weather pattern of the past several years, a growing number of scientists are beginning to suspect that many seemingly contradictory meteorological fluctuations are actually part of a global climatic upheaval. However widely the weather varies from place to place and time to time, when meteorologists take an average of temperatures around the globe they find that the atmosphere has been growing gradually cooler for the past three decades. The trend shows no indication of reversing. Climatological Cassandras are becoming increasingly apprehensive, for the weather aberrations they are studying may be the harbinger of another ice age.
Telltale signs are everywhere —from the unexpected persistence and thickness of pack ice in the waters around Iceland to the southward migration of a warmth-loving creature like the armadillo from the Midwest.Since the 1940s the mean global temperature has dropped about 2.7° F. Although that figure is at best an estimate, it is supported by other convincing data. When Climatologist George J. Kukla of Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory and his wife Helena analyzed satellite weather data for the Northern Hemisphere, they found that the area of the ice and snow cover had suddenly increased by 12% in 1971 and the increase has persisted ever since. Areas of Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic, for example, were once totally free of any snow in summer; now they are covered year round.
Scientists have found other indications of global cooling...
Here's the alarmist, world is ending part:

On May 11, 2009, PG&E informed the Mendocino coast of its decision to cancel plans for a pilot wave energy project, Mendocino WaveConnect near Fort Bragg, California.
The Mendocino coast is now encouraging PG&E to reconsider their decision to cancel Mendocino WaveConnect and suggests WaveConnect move the launch site to the waterfront Mill Site.
Background: PG&E canceled Mendocino WaveConnect based on the Noyo Harbor being too narrow and shallow. The Mendocino community agrees and asks PG&E WaveConnect to consider re-situating the wave energy equipment launch at the now defunct, empty, waterfront Mill Site in Soldier Bay. PG&E may easily develop and construct a state-of-the-art launch there, tailored specifically to their needs. The Mill Site is completely empty now, awaiting this development and establishment of Mendocino Energy...with Mendocino WaveConnect as the first project.
