Obama has been accused of a lot of things lately (fascist, communist, fascist and communist at the same time), but we may soon see a new fount of allegations against the President: he doesn't like summer break! Sure, there are plenty of waterfights and impromptu sporting events (supporting America's critical squirtgun and Sunny D industries), but Obama argues that the lengthy summer vacation enjoyed by students puts them at an academic disadvantage on a global stage.
From the AP:
"'Now, I know longer school days and school years are not wildly popular ideas,' the president said earlier this year. 'Not with Malia and Sasha, not in my family, and probably not in yours. But the challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom.' The president, who has a sixth-grader and a third-grader, wants schools to add time to classes, to stay open late and to let kids in on weekends so they have a safe place to go. 'Our school calendar is based upon the agrarian economy and not too many of our kids are working the fields today,' Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a recent interview with The Associated Press."
The agrarian economy point is a good one. I know that for the last few decades some school districts have experimented with year-round school years (though I can't speak to their success - any education experts out there?). But yes, it's not like secondary school students are wholesale adding to our country's productivity in summer months by helping to bring in the harvest.
What do you think? Is the summer break outmoded? Should our students spent more time in school? More days and longer hours? If not, what other ways can we make America's schools more competitive?Obama has been accused of a lot of things lately (fascist, communist, fascist and... more
