Your days of helping yourself to a free hotel towel or bathrobe are OVER.
A Miami company has patented a washable RFID (radio frequency identification) chip that can be sewn into towels, bathrobes and bed sheets so hotels can keep track of their linens.
Linen Technology Tracking says the chip will not only help cut down in the theft bathrobes and towels, but will also help hotels monitor their linens in real time, so they know when they need to order more.
So far just three hotels — in Honolulu, Miami and Manhattan — are using the chip. Those hotels asked to remain anonymous.
But the product is apparently working. The Honolulu property says its reduced theft of its pool towels from 4,000 a month to just 750 since installing the chip last summer. That’s a savings of more than $16,000 a month.
There’s no word on when more hotels might start using the chip.
So what’s your take on this? Have you ever snuck a hotel towel or bathrobe? Or have you taken something even more adventurous? Personally I just stick to clearing out the new toiletries each day. But I did have a friend who stole a trashcan from Mandalay Bay in Vegas when it first opened. He still uses that thing to this day. Stay classy, peeps..!Your days of helping yourself to a free hotel towel or bathrobe are OVER.
