This weekend The X Factor slams to an exhausting, lurid close and an expectant Britain finally finds out who'll be singing this year's Christmas number one.
Although we finally gets our weekends back, we'll have to do without Cheryl Cole's wistful stare, Louis Walsh's hilariously obvious hair-dye disasters, benefits-cashing, bongo-humping Wagner and tabloid spreads of Katie Waissel's 80-something prostitute grandma sprawled on a bed in lingerie. It's a dark day for British culture.
After weeks of public, premium-rate votes that failed to derail the Cowell Express, we're down to four lots of finalists: One Direction, Cher Lloyd, Matt Cardle and Rebecca Ferguson. Using a tried and tested system of guesswork, hunches, sketchily-researched voting stats and pure man logic, here's the order I think they'll finish in:
Last: Cher Lloyd
Disclaimer: I'd be happy if Cher won this thing because I'll never tire of the belligerent, affronted way she answers any question thrown at her. A simple query about how she thought her performance went brings our her inner defiant Pat Butcher, and not since John Barnes has anybody so skilfully shoehorned a rap into a gentle pop song.
The public doesn't seem to like her as much as me, however, and out of all the finalists she's appeared in the sing-offs the most times. Last she may come but a profitable collaboration with N-Dubz awaits.
Third: Rebecca Ferguson
Depending on whether you're a Rebecca fan or not, this girl can either really, really sing, or she's bland and she squawks.
With a versatile singing style and two cute kids to roll out for heart-tugging video montages between songs, she'll rake the votes in but probably won't notch up enough to beat the might of One Direction and Cardle.
Second: One Direction
Bookies have slashed the odds on this quintet of air-punching, Lego-haired boy band and along with a bet on them wearing trousers tucked into boots, some money thrown at them winning wouldn't be a bad wager. There's millions of schoolgirls likely to text their support and just as many mums happy to pick up the phone to vote.
First place: Matt Cardle
By far the most successful 2010 X Factor contestant for iTunes sales, and a field-leader in votes, Matt Cardle is the finalist's act to beat. He's amiable, boasts an unfaltering vocal prowess and was responsible for this year's finest audition (below). If he doesn't win, it'll be a travesty on par with Nick Clegg admitting he was just kidding about that whole no student fees thing, and suggest some kind of X Factor fix. And as we all know, that's completely out of the question...

Here's a handy compilation of the worst (and, somewhat paradoxically, best) X Factor auditions over the years.
