It barely took minutes--er, maybe an hour or two at most--for the Internet to grow all-a-twitter about Sam "Away We Go" Mendes receiving the troubled reigns to a gentle and touching indie franchise like James Bond. But that hasn't stopped a few moments of brillance to shine through a patchy Mendes trademark.
Jim Emerson started the sammendesbondtitles hashtag questioning Jarfinger and Revolutionary Royale. David Loehr took the opportunity to interject with A View to A Road to Perdition. Andrew "Filmbrain" Grant took it a step further with From Perdition With Love. Andrew Dignan points out the obvious:
Everyone doing the #sammendesbondtitles thing realizes Quantum of Solace already sounds like something Mendes would direct, right?
But sometimes you can't stop the signal, as Steven Santos and Craig Phillips proved with Away We Go On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Away We Goldfinger, respectively. The kicker, however, came from The FUTURIST's own disgust of Mendes as Bond director coupled with his dislike of Michael Cera.
Filmbrain's reply? "Maybe Mendes will cast Cera as the villain."
But this is a young twittering, my friends. So go out and add your own to #sammendesbondtitles.

It's Mendes. Sam Mendes.
The British helmer is in negotiations to direct the 23rd installment of the venerable James Bond franchise.
Production is being fast-tracked and could begin as early as June with an eye toward a 2011 release. Plans for the film are moving forward despite a possible sale of MGM. Sony co-produced and distributed the most recent installment of the 007 series with MGM.

It’s summer, so five kinds of movies will soon arrive: the rare ones that justify the existence of the Hollywood machine; the ones that I shouldn’t like but probably will; the ones that could turn out terrible or fine; the ones that are completely unpredictable; and the ones you couldn’t pay me to see. Given that hardly anyone gets paid to see movies these days, that category should perhaps be retired. But for what it’s worth, here’s my matrix of viewing expectations for June. It’s summer, so five kinds of movies will soon arrive: the rare ones that... more
