Once upon a time, there were these objects made of plastic called toys. They came in all shapes, sizes and colors: cowboys and cowgirls, space adventurers, 12-inch soldiers and tiny ones, dinosaurs, cars, slinky dogs, babies, and handsome men and women who had more clothes in the wardrobe than the “Sex and the City” quartet combined. Children played with these toys, making up stories as they went along, creating whole new worlds.
The “Toy Story” trilogy is, without a doubt, a celebration of that most powerful tool called the imagination. It takes place in a world with no videogames or Wii in sight, even though its plastic characters know how to use a PC, how to surf the web and how to use a cell phone. It’s a world where children of a certain age still play with these toys, even if those games at times involve the chewing, gnawing and banging of these objects.
“Toy Story 3” is a fitting, and touching final chapter to a series that not only helped define digital animation but also positioned Pixar as the only studio capable of producing and delivering the kind of character- and story-driven movies Hollywood once was well known for. “Toy Story 3” may not live up to the standards of Pixar’s last three films –“Ratatouille,” “Wall•E” and “Up,” masterpieces all– and it may feel slightly formulaic at times (nothing wrong with that if the formula is done right). But it does deliver an emotional sucker punch at the end that carries the same emotional weight as the best scenes in all of the three films mentioned above.
