Glenn Beck paid a visit to Bill O’Reilly on Monday night to talk about whether we’ll see a Tea Party resurgence — and to chime in on the Republican establishment. Noting those Republicans he likes (and those he doesn’t), he chided the “establishment” for “betraying” their values.
Beck is “done” with with the “big government” Republicans, he said. “The Republicans have betrayed their own values for so long.” Whereas those like Beck are just trying to push “common sense.”
There are a few Republicans he does like, though, including Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY). Asked about Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Beck said he hasn’t quite made up his mind. And straight-talking New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie? Beck used to like him, but now, not so much.
But back to the Tea Party, O’Reilly questioned whether it can “recapture its mojo knowing that the press hates it?” What the press thinks doesn’t matter, Beck replied. Anyone who stands up for small government, he added, can have success (though some of those pesky, “strange” libertarians are a different story).
“I am sure that the Republicans will become less and less relevant as every day that goes by,” Beck asserted. “They’re becoming — if they’re not already — the Whig Party.”Glenn Beck paid a visit to Bill O’Reilly on Monday night to talk about whether... more

Beck's newfound adoration for Israel may seem comical, but it represents a convergence of right-wing ideologies that is in fact quite dangerous.
Conservative huckster Glenn Beck is packing up his white board and floppy clown shoes and heading to Jerusalem, where he hopes to inspire the world to join him in scuttling any hope of a two-state solution to the 60-year-old Israel-Palestine conflict.
Of late, Beck has been making some mention of Israel on his show every day. He just returned from a “fact-finding” trip to the Holy Land, he's reportedly making a movie about the Jewish state, and this week he announced that he'll be holding a “restoring courage” rally in Jerusalem this summer, where he hopes his legion of devoted fans will take few days out of their retirements to join him.
Beck “thinks disaster is imminent for Israel, because of a 'two state solution that cuts off Jerusalem' from the world.” "God is involved in man's affairs, but so is the force of darkness," he continued. "I believe I've been asked to stand in Jerusalem. Many in the history of man have had the opportunity to stand with the Jewish people...and they have failed."
But Beck will succeed, because what the Middle East really needs is more slavish tribalism.
It's the stuff of comedy – Loathsome American Protagonist Saves the Holy Land! – but Beck's newfound adoration for Israel represents a convergence of right-wing ideologies that is in fact quite dangerous. Beck's trying to turn an audience of very low-information viewers into hawkish “pro-Israel” hardliners who will "stand with Israel" even against long-standing US foreign policy -- they'll support more settlements and oppose the "roadmap" if their beloved leader tells them to. And the region already has ample rejectionists on both sides.
In one sense, Beck is trying to undo some of the damage after his relentless, anti-Semitic-tinged attacks on George Soros were condemned by observers across the political spectrum. As Anthea Butler noted, Beck's “obsessions with Jews, from his attacks on George Soros, to his statement that Reform Judaism was like radical Islam, have brought the religious huckster condemnation and scorn,” and he now “wants to prove himself a true 'friend' of Israel with this rally.”
But Beck is also jumping on what has become an almost fetishistic “support” for Israel among much of the American Right in recent years. This is generally ascribed to conservative evangelists' end-times theology, and indeed Beck is going to be the keynote speaker for this year's Christians United for Israel (CUFI) summit in Washington, DC. CUFI is the brainchild of televangelist John Hagee, who has emerged as the most visible face of the conservative Christian faction of the “Israel lobby.”
Beck is a Mormon, and as Joanna Brooks wrote at Religion Dispatches, “Mormons may diverge from Hagee on some details of the last days (Mormon theology is usually characterized as premillenialist) but we do read the Book of Revelation.”
And in Mormon end-times scenarios, we don't call them "witnesses": they are described as apostles, or even prophets. Invading armies of Gentiles bent on the destruction of Israel will kill the two apostles, and their murdered bodies will lie dead in the streets of Jerusalem for three days without a decent burial. And then the Mount of Olives will split open. And then Jesus will return. That’s how Beck's guru, the LDS ultra-conservative Cleon Skousen described it in 1972.
But appeals to the rapture-ready don't tell the whole story. According to years of opinion polls, Americans don't follow foreign affairs closely (three years after our invasion of Iraq, two-thirds of young people couldn't find the country on a map), yet Gallup tells us the partisan gap between Americans whose sympathies rest with the Israelis or the Palestinians is at an all-time high.
“The Obama administration has created and staffed a new position tucked inside their communications shop for helping coordinate rapid response to unfavorable stories and fostering and improving relations with the progressive online community,” reports the Huffington Post.
The man tasked with the role of “disseminating push back” against Obama’s online critics by direct order of the White House will be Jesse Lee, a blogger who has previously put out White House spin in response to claims made by Glenn Beck.
“The post is a new one for this White House. Rapid response has been the purview of the Democratic National Committee (and will continue to be). Lee’s hire, however, suggests that a portion of it will now be handled from within the administration. It also signals that the White House will be adopting a more aggressive engagement in the online world in the months ahead.”
“If you’re going to post something online about Obama that isn’t true, Lee is going to be the one to handle you,” reports Chris O’Shea, noting that the move is about “squashing any negative stories” that could derail Obama’s re-election bid.

It's getting harder and harder to keep up with Glenn Beck's conspiracy delusions. If it isn't health care reform being a backdoor to reparations for slavery, it's Cash-for-Clunkers being a plot to let the government take control of your computer. Or food safety regulations being an excuse to raise prices so that people starve. Or that chemical trails from airplanes are actually missiles from a Chinese submarine off the coast of Santa Monica.
Lately Beck has taken to accusing Google of somehow being in cahoots with the federal government to foment unrest around the world or recruit our youth into socialist conclaves or ... who knows what. He is certain that whatever it is, it is evil. On Monday's program Beck gave this ominous warning to his legion of disciples:
"May I recommend, if you're doing your own homework, don't do a Google search. Seems to me that Google is pretty deeply in bed with the government. Maybe this is explaining why Google is being kicked out of all the other countries? Are they just a shill now for the United States government?"
Beck continued his assault on Google today, accusing it of being a hard-left enterprise with ties to many of his favorite enemies. These include FreePress.net, the Tides Foundation, MoveOn.org, Van Jones, and (gasp) George Soros
So what got Beck's panties in a bunch over Google? Is he really disturbed by its size and lack of respect for privacy? He never really cared that much about those issues if it were Koch Industries or Microsoft. In fact he ordinarily celebrates large, successful, intrusive business like banks or insurance companies as representative of America's opportunity. Is it his innate distrust of technology and youth culture? He clearly has an
animosity toward young people
and an affinity for an analog past that favors blackboards over digital displays.
These things may tell a part of the story, but there is something more fundamental that may explain Beck's Google bashing. His boss, Rupert Murdoch, has had it in for Google for about a year now. Murdoch believes that Google is appropriating his content and failing to compensate him for it, and he has
taken this battle to extremes asking,
"Should we be allowing Google to steal all our copyrights?"
Of course, Google is doing no such thing. They are simply aggregating news from many sites across the web. They are providing links to Murdoch's web sites, and others, that actually increase traffic and revenue. And this is something he could stop easily at any time with one line of code that would block Google from including his sites. What's more, Murdoch does the very same sort of news aggregation on many of his own sites like Fox Nation. But the issue is that Murdoch wants to force Google to pay him for the extra business they send his way and Google had the audacity to decline.
Another wrinkle involves Murdoch's brand new iPad-only application, The Daily. Murdoch has high hopes for this fee-based news product. He has said that it is the future of news and that it will be the cornerstone of his news empire going forward. He launched it in conjunction with Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who will also share in the earnings. Apple also announced that it is offering a new service that will provide access to other news and magazine publications on a subscription basis. That service will be competing with a similar service recently announced by Google.
Google is also competing with Apple on cell phones and cell phone operating systems, Internet browsers, advertising, and even computer tablets. So Murdoch's partner and publisher, Apple, will be going up against Google in numerous businesses, including his cherished iPad appIt's getting harder and harder to keep up with Glenn Beck's conspiracy... more
Glenn Beck, as usual, trumped them all. He told his audience that Soros has a five-step plan:
1. Create a "shadow government" under the guise of humanitarian aid.
2. Take control of the media.
3. Destabilize the state by building anti-government sentiment. (Yes, Beck attacked his opponent for building anti-government sentiment.)
4. Subvert the American electoral system.
5. Take over the world, of course.
Glenn Beck's conspiracy theories are no less bizarre and inflammatory than those of LaRouche, but his nightly audience numbers in the millions. Earlier this year, Americans voted Beck their second favorite television personality after Oprah Winfrey.
In consequence, he is far more dangerous. It must be a great sorrow to George Soros, who having survived the Holocaust now finds himself the subject of the same kind of conspiracy theories that the Nazis used to demonize the Jews.
The big bad "Jewish masterminds" of Hitler's day were the Rothschilds, a family of bankers who have featured prominently in anti-Semitic conspiracy theories since the 1800s. Like Soros, they have been accused of controlling the media, instigating war, overthrowing governments, and of course, taking over the world.Glenn Beck, as usual, trumped them all. As part of our coverage of Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally Saturday, CBS News commissioned the company AirPhotosLive.com to offer an independent estimate of how many people showed up for the event. AirPhotosLive.com calculated that there were approximately 87,000 people there, plus or minus 9,000 people. It was the only scientific estimate made of the number of people at the rally.
The estimate generated criticism from conservative bloggers as well as from Beck himself, who suggested the rally attracted at least 500,000 people.

Conservative TV host Glenn Beck has held a controversial rally at Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. He and Sarah Palin spoke from the very spot where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech 47 years ago on that same day, August 28. While Glenn Beck was addressing tens of thousands of predominantly white conservative activists, civil rights leaders accusing the group of hijacking King's legacy held their own rival rally.
