Last night during an appearance on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Massachusetts senatorial candidate Elizabeth Warren explained why the federal government no longer invests in building up the middle-class. Here is Warren, starting at 2:40 in the interview, a video of which can be seen below the fold:
"---
What's happened is that Washington now works for those who can hire an army of lobbyists and an army of lawyers.
You know, if you're in the drug business, and you are selling prescriptions to seniors, and you don't want to have to negotiate over the prices, Washington works beautifully for you.
If you want subsidies to drill for oil, Washington is working for you.
If you run a hedge fund and want to pay the lowest possible taxes, Washington is working for you.
In fact, there was recently a study, just in the last couple of weeks, there was a study in which it comes out that thirty of the largest companies in the United States are now spending more on lobbying than they pay in federal taxes.
Think about that. I mean that is the investment, and that's what they see as the future.
---"
Politicians and pundits often say that Washington, D.C. is broken. However, the truth is that Washington works just fine for large corporations. These corporations invested heavily in influencing public policy, and it paid off handsomely for them. Everyone else just got left behind in the process.
Elizabeth Warren gets this, and it is yet another reason why we need her in the U.S. Senate.

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren has released an "It Gets Better" video, drawing upon her experience as a schoolteacher to reassure LGBT youth who may be getting bullied that their lives will improve when they get older.
"I'm Elizabeth Warren, and you may be wondering what I have to say to you," she says in the video, which debuted on Wednesday. "After all, I haven't lived your life. But when I graduated from college, I was a schoolteacher, and I watched what happens in hallways, on sidewalks, out in the schoolyard. I watched kids who pushed, who bullied. I saw how much pain some kids could inflict on other kids."
Warren tells struggling young people who may need help to call the Trevor Project, a national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services for LGBT youth.
"Because here's what you'll find," she says. "There are a lot of different people out there in this world, and a lot of people who celebrate those differences. That's what makes us strong. That's what makes us exciting. So, hang in there. It gets better."

When people ask me why these two candidates are so important, my answer is very simple: Both women are true progressives, and that's what America needs. It's pretty clear that the present 'system' of electing our leaders isn't going to change any time soon. We've made halfhearted attempts at reforming the election process and have basically gotten nowhere.

Thursday, Scott Brown had an op-ed in the Boston Herald voicing his disgust with lawmakers who benefit financially from policies on which they are passing laws. "I've always thought legislators should live by the same laws that govern everyone else. Unfortunately, that isn't always the case," Brown said.
Funny he mentions that, because Senator Scott Brown directly impacts issues pertaining to the banking and oil industries - both of which he holds stock in. According to his personal financial disclosure documents, Brown holds some substantial stock in Bank of America, Exxon Mobile, and GE.

Elizabeth Warren Vs. Tea Party Member!
This is so typical of what we have encountered since the Republican base (ashamed of what had happened to our country after they clawed their way to get one, George W. Bush appointed to the highest office in the land) CHANGED THEIR NAME TO THE TEA PARTY. In the video below you will see the typical ignorance that emanates from the Tea Party by its members. If it wasn’t so vile it would be laughable (and possibly pitied). Please watch videos and read article. Elizabeth Warren is leading champion of working people. thinkingblue

Elizabeth Warren Heckled By Tea Party Supporter
BROCKTON, Mass. -- Moments into a speech before volunteers here Wednesday evening, Elizabeth Warren was interrupted by a Tea Party supporter who hurled a gender-based epithet at the Senate candidate. The man, who said he'd been unemployed since February 2010, objected to Warren's expressed affiliation with the frustrations of Occupy Wall Street, and argued that the Tea Party has been protesting Wall Street excess for longer than the nascent global movement.
The crowd tried to shout the man down, but Warren told her supporters to let him speak. "No, no, it's alright. Let me say two things," she said. "I'm very sorry that you've been out of work. I'm also very sorry that the recent jobs bill that would've brought 22,000 jobs to Massachusetts did not pass in the Senate."
Speaking in a packed VFW hall, Warren went on to address his question about her association with Occupy Wall Street. "I've been protesting what's been going on on Wall Street for a very long time," she said, but added that the movement has its own independent agenda and will proceed along its own course.
"Yeah, so has the Tea Party," the man said, before losing his cool.
"Well, if you're the intellectual creator of that so-called party," he said, "you're a socialist whore. I don't want anything to do with you." The crowd shouted him down as he added that Warren's "boss," presumably referring to the president, was "foreign-born." He then attempted to storm out through a side door. Finding it locked, he retreated out the back of the VFW hall instead.
In April, before President Obama released his "long form" birth certificate, 43 percent of Republicans said that the president was either definitely or probably born in a foreign country, according to a Gallup survey. After he released the birth certificate, the number dropped, but still held at roughly one in four when polled in May.
Warren took the challenge in stride. "So, we are here to do work, and I think we have a reminder that we have a lot of work to do," she said as the heckler struggled with the door.
The Tea Party was founded on a sense that something ephemeral had been stolen by someone and that a movement was needed to "take the country back." Occupy Wall Street is now getting media attention the Tea Party believes is rightfully theirs, and the perceived slight can only inflame the movement's sense of victimhood. They didn't just lose the country as they knew it. Now they've lost coverage on CNN, too.
After the event, Warren reflected on the man's outburst, which she said was her first such encounter. "I actually felt sorry for the guy. I really genuinely did. He's been out of work now for a year and a half. And bless his heart, I mean, he thought somehow it would help to come here and yell names," she told HuffPost.
The assault stuck with Warren, and she continued to think about it throughout the night. Hours later, she said she wasn't upset with the man himself, but rather with those who attempt to channel his anger in a malevolent direction. "I was thinking more about the heckler. I'm not angry with him, but he didn't come up with the idea that his biggest problem was Occupy Wall Street. There's someone else pre-packaging that poison -- and that's who makes me angry," she said.

"Let me state for the record again, "I love Elizabeth Warren!" This woman scares and frightens the Right, and she brings out their lowest, crudest essence. Yes, because Elizabeth Warren supports a graduated income tax, something every conservative Republican President in the 20th Century supported, she is automatically a "socialist" and she allegedly sells her body for money in exchange for sex even though, as her opponent Sen. Scott Brown helpfully points out, people wouldn't want to see her naked." tjwaker of the http://dailynational.com/

Tea Party Heckler Calls Elizabeth Warren "Socialist Whore"
by David Badash on November 3, 2011
.
A Tea Party supporter showed up at an Elizabeth Warren speech and called Elizabeth Warren a “socialist whore,” and Barack Obama, “foreign-born,” after speaking his mind about his own unemployment, Warren’s support of the Occupy Wall Street Movement.
The man, who said he’d been unemployed since February 2010, objected to Warren’s expressed affiliation with the frustrations of Occupy Wall Street, and argued that the Tea Party has been protesting Wall Street excess for longer than the nascent global movement.
The crowd tried to shout the man down, but Warren told her supporters to let him speak. “No, no, it’s alright. Let me say two things,” she said. “I’m very sorry that you’ve been out of work. Earlier this week, consumer advocate and Massachusetts Senate Democratic primary candidate Elizabeth Warren told the Daily Beast that not only does she support Occupy Wall Street, but that her writing and research formed much of the “intellectual foundation” for the wider 99 Percent Movement.
The Massachusetts Republican Party capitalized on Warren’s words, and on Wednesday released a new commercial touting Warren as the “Matriarch of Mayhem.” The video splices Warren’s words with the out-of-context remarks of a handful of protesters and the words of pollster Doug Schoen, whose words are used to encapsulate polling his firm did in Zuccotti Park about Occupy Wall Street.
The ad quotes Schoen saying Occupy Wall Street “believes in radical distribution of wealth, civil disobedience, and in some cases, violence.” Watch it: (VIDEO)
The problem with quoting Schoen isn’t just the reputability of his poll — where he had sample takers go out to Zuccotti Park for one day and poll the people who happened to be there at the time and who were willing to be surveyed — but the fact that his words radically misrepresent his own poll. Only 4 percent of poll respondents said Occupy Wall Street should choose as its goal the “radical redistribution of wealth.” The vast majority of poll respondents opposed the use of violence. It’s true that 98 percent approved of civil disobedience — a tactic used by the Founding Fathers and Civil Rights Movement. The Massachusetts GOP should stick to policy critiques and substantive criticism rather than misrepresenting polling to scare voters.Earlier this week, consumer advocate and Massachusetts Senate Democratic primary... more

Everyone works hard not to get cheated out of their fair share. In the past 30 years, due to gains in technology, productivity rose but salaries when adjusted for inflation decreased for the middle class. The extra wealth accumulated at the top 1%. They then use that wealth to influence politicians and get bailouts and all sorts of other favors. When wealth that is concentrated in the hands of a few is one of the main influences in politics then society is no longer a democracy it is a plutocracy. That is what the protest is about. We all work hard and we all want to be treated fairly and we want the rule of law to be restored such that it applies to everyone in society and that the wealthy are not exempt from their actions. Corporations are needed; unethical behavior and corruption aren't needed.Everyone works hard not to get cheated out of their fair share. In the past 30 years,... more

With Elizabeth Warren’s alleged elitism becoming an issue in the Senate race — Republicans continually call her “Professor Warren,” and Scott Brown recently contrasted her with his education in the school of “hard knocks” — Warren has released a video of her telling her own story:
The vid underscores the degree to which her bio will be central to the race — and the degree to which her success will turn on her ability to parry Republican efforts to paint her as another snooty coastal liberal elitist who knows better than you how to spend your money. Note in particular her explanation for how she ended up in Massachusetts — her out of state roots are also expected to be an issue — and the linking of her story to her anger over what’s happened to the middle class, the central rationale of her candidacy.

BOSTON (AP) -- Republican U.S. Sen. Scott Brown of Massachusetts says he was "joking" when he said "Thank God" Democratic rival Elizabeth Warren didn't take her clothes off to pay for college.
Brown told reporters Friday he was responding to a "wisecrack" from Warren about a decision he made to pay for school.
During a Democratic primary debate Tuesday, Warren said she kept her "clothes on" when asked how she paid for college. The questioner had mentioned Brown's decision to pose nude for Cosmopolitan magazine as a law student.
Brown laughed during a radio interview Thursday and said "Thank God" when asked about Warren's comment.
Democrats say Brown's remark was demeaning to women. Brown says he and Warren were joking.

Elizabeth Warren:
I hear all this, you know, “Well, this is class warfare, this is whatever.”—No!
There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own. Nobody.
You built a factory out there—good for you! But I want to be clear.
You moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for.
You hired workers the rest of us paid to educate.
You were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for.
You didn’t have to worry that maurauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work the rest of us did.
Now look, you built a factory and it turned into something terrific, or a great idea—God bless. Keep a big hunk of it.
But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along.Elizabeth Warren:
