“Blinky™” is a wickedly evil 3D-CG animated short horror film by the Irish filmmaker Ruairi Robinson, which has been nominated for Best Narrative Film/Video at the 2012 Vimeo Festival +Awards. Robinson broke through to great acclaim with his 3D short film, “Fifty Percent Grey,” which was nominated for an Oscar in 2002 and followed it up with “The Silent City,” a post-apocalyptic short film starring Cillian Murphy.
“Blinky™” is shot with visual execution that is truly masterful, and the story is as bloody creepy as it gets. The amazing thirteen-minute short film stars Max Records from “Where The Wild Things Are” and tells the story of an angst-ridden young boy, who is trapped in a well-to-do, yet toxic home environment where his parents are constantly fighting. For Christmas he requests and gets Blinky™, the latest robot friend/home helper. But will the twisted and increasingly sinister Blinky™ actually turn out to be the true friend the distraught boy desperately wants and needs? Well, so sadly, very probably not….
This piece includes color photographs and the twisted, darkly comical short film.

May 16th marks the 100th anniversary of Studs Terkel’s birth and an occasion to memorialize one of the most prolific writers and cultural critics in the history of Chicago letters. As an author, broadcaster and oral historian, legendary Chicagoan Studs Terkel celebrated the lives of ordinary Americans. Some of Terkel’s many friends and fans are hoping to return the favor with a series of events marking the 100th birthday of a man whose work is a chronicle of the 20th century.
The Studs Terkel Centenary, a group headed up by Terkel’s friends, including Chicago Tribune reporter Rick Kogan, on Saturday will rededicate the Division Street Bridge, which was named after Terkel 20 years ago. On Wednesday, The Newberry Library will host a birthday party featuring guest speakers who will share stories about Studs. Terkel’s friends will ensure that his memory lives on with a day of Studs-only programming on WFMT-FM on his birthday, with performances of passages from Terkel’s 2001 book “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?” at Steppenwolf Theatre next week and by phoning in personal anecdotes about Terkel to a hotline set up by Chicago’s Hull House Museum.
This piece includes a number of photographs, an animated short and five documentary short films about the life and works of Studs Terkel.

Remember the parable about the woman who heard the sounds of horrible monsters right outside her house and frantically ran around locking all her doors and windows, only to discover that the monsters were really inside the house, specifically inside of her? Well a similar tale is played out in “Réflexion,” a poetic, funny and absurd animated short film produced by the Parisian group Planktoon in association with Disney animator Yoshimichi Tamura. “Réflexion” is a tribute to Disney films from 60-to-70 years ago, which is built around the concept of reflection. What happens when one’s inner conflict becomes a version of the Evil Queen mirror? Just watch and find out!!

“Sleeping Betty” is the award-winning, absurdly humorous and surreal animated short film by Claude Cloutier at The National Film Board of Canada. In a sumptuous palace located in the basement of a house in a working-class neighborhood of Montreal, poor Princess Betty is bedridden and asleep, the victim of a strange case of narcoleptic stupor.
In a panic, the King calls on his subjects to rescue her, appealing to Uncle Henri VIII, Aunt Victoria, an emotional alien, a cool witch and a courageously funky Prince. The worthy Prince has to leave his royal suburb on his valiant steed, making his way to Princess Betty’s bedside on an arduous trip replete with ludicrous adventures. But will the Prince’s sweet kiss really be enough to awaken the sleeping Princess Betty? Where are we, or is that a different story?
Propelled by Claude Cloutier’s signature drawing style and absurdist humor, this anachronistic and playful animated short film sets the Perrault classic tale in Cloutier’s disjointed little kingdom of odd people and surreal habits, which offers the viewer many surprising twists.
Includes colorful illustrations, as well as the humorously wacky animated short film.

An enormous clifftop, blue skies, multiple deaths and a yellow canary who matter-of-factly keeps meticulous notes of it all. “Yellow Belly End “is a dryly absurd, award-winning animated short film, created by Philip Bacon as a unique and compelling graduation film at England’s National Film and Television School. Bacon speaks in metaphors about the tragedies of life and death, as a yellow canary records animal suicides at the edge of a cliff, or possibly the world. The story unfolds in a way that encourages viewers to create their own interpretations of the larger meanings of the film.

“Impossible Present” is a charming, beautifully executed one-minute holiday 3D-CG animated short film by LA-based Royale Studios. Have you ever spent time trying to open a plastic package that was sealed tightly shut, you know the ones I’m talking about? “A Krampus Carol” is a wickedly humorous three-minute animated short film by Anthony Bourdain, a film that smoulders in the dark recesses of holiday revelry. You know all about Santa: the traditional winter gift-bringer with cheeks like a rose and a nose like a cherry. Now meet the Krampus, an evil, boozy goat-horned menace with a monstrous tongue, who whips children into shape all around Europe. Krampus is Santa Claus’ whip-toting Christmas sidekick. According to Austrian legend, Krampus joins Santa, tending to the children on Santa’s naughty list. No lumps of coal here, though. Instead, Krampus licks and whips children into shape with switches and rusty chains, before dragging them in baskets to a fiery place below.

“Paths of Hate” is an animated ten-minute short film directed by Damian Nenow at Platige Image, which is in the running for a 2012 Oscar for animated short films. The film was named on a list of 10 films that was released last week by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences; three to five nominees for the Oscar will be chosen from this list.
“Paths of Hate” contains stunning visuals that recreate a WWII-era aerial dogfight and presents a dynamic tale about the hatred that seems to be an indispensable element of human nature. Damien Nenow, a recent graduate of Poland’s Lodz Film School, has created a film of great visual power, which brilliantly shows the demons that slumber deep within the human soul and have the power to push people into the abyss of blind hate, fury and rage. The finale of the film introduces a surreal turn of events, which stands as the director’s bitter comment on the bloody destructive fury of war.
This piece includes colorful illustrations, as well as the stunning animated short film.
