Retired Extremely Dangerous. Summit has unveiled the first trailer for RED, starring Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Mary-Louise Parker, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Karl Urban and Richard Dreyfuss, basically a helluva lot of damn good actors. This is based on the comic book series written by Warren Ellis, hence the DC Comics tag at the beginning. It's about a team of retired hitmen who come out of retirement. One of the best parts of this is seeing the lovely Helen Mirren with guns, that's just pure badass. Plus, John Malkovich looks frickin' hilarious. This actually looks pretty damn good, I just hope it's not too cheesy. Watch & enjoy!

[caption id=" align=" align="aligncenter" width="400" caption="There is nothing wrong with the image. Nothing at all. [img via DC Comics"][/caption]Everyone and their grandmother is stoked for the adaptation of Warren Ellis' Red. It's got the trifecta of a good cast, a premise from one of the best writers working today and Helen Mirren with a sniper rifle.
So, what are we forgetting? Oh, the artist.
Cully Hammer is the guy who drew Red. Now, as Rich Johnston points out, you wouldn't know that if you're an enterprising movie blogger/writer who is regurgitating press releases. Previously, the infamous Alan Moore "Remove my name from Watchmen or my Snake God will eat your children" event was our best example of a writer wanting his name off an adaptation.
Of course, these are a bit different. Moore has a history of his works being treated like a red-headed stepchild (i.e. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Swamp Thing, Hellblazer Constantine) wheras Ellis is used to his darlings winding up in dungeons and occasionally emerging into the light.
Hammer should be included in these little press releases, because it is the moral thing to do. That also explains why he isn't in them: studios writing these little smidges of blog fodder are interested in the names that'll attract attention, like your BRUCE WILLIS, MORGAN FREEMAN, WARREN ELLIS types.
Cully Hammer doesn't fall into that realm. In fact, I'm sure he's a nice guy and hey, I really liked his Blue Beetle work. Unfortunately, it isn't at all shocking his name is being kept off the sheets. But that doesn't mean we have to forget.[caption id=" align=" align="aligncenter" width="400"... more

If you consider yourself remotely a fan of comics, you're bound to run across Warren Ellis' name. After all, he's written everything from Marvel to DC, but specialized himself with his series under the Avatar imprint.
Gravel, which follows the titular "combat magician" through all manner of exploits, has been optioned to film by Legendary Pictures. This marks the fourth original title of Ellis' that is currently in production.
He's currently expected to pen the screenplay, which if you're at all familiar with Gravel's exploits, can range from zombie prison outbreaks to battling six other "Minor" magicians for control of an accursed text.If you consider yourself remotely a fan of comics, you're bound to run across... more

From the desk of Internet Jesus:
I’m writing a film treatment for Hollywood Gang, who co-produced Frank Miller’s 300. Hollywood Gang have previously optioned my graphic novel (with Chris Sprouse) OCEAN.
On my desk, the treatment is called Untitled Arthurian Project.
On their desk, the project is called EXCALIBUR.
I’m working directly with Gianni Nunnari, Oliver Kramer and Craig Flores (whom I was delighted to bump into on the Warner’s lot the other day) and having a great time.
--
If you're unfamiliar with Ellis' work, may I just suggest you start with Transmetropolitan, then Planetary and work your way up to Gravel.
Ellis has been responsible for the animated G.I. Joe mini-movie on Adult Swim earlier this Summer. But man, imagine Ellis penning an Arthur legend.

Morgan Freeman could star in another thriller movie soon, as he's in talks to co-star in Red with Bruce Willis.
The movie, which is being financed by Twilight studio Summit Entertainment, is based on a DC comic.
The title was originally created by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner, which is bout a former black-ops CIA bod trying to live a quietly retired live.
However since photos of him quietly fishing or doing the New York Times crossword wouldn't exactly say this as a "thriller", his quiet retirement world is shattered when a high-tech assassin targets him.
There confirmed director yet, but writing partners/brothers Jon and Erich Hoeber are working on a script.Morgan Freeman could star in another thriller movie soon, as he's in talks to... more

I'm a huge fan of Cave/Ellis' work on The Proposition soundtrack and The Assassination Of Jesse James.
And their next theatrically released score will be for John Hillcoat's The Road adaptation.
But from Pitchfork:
On their MySpace page, Cave and Ellis mention that they have scored The Girls of Phnom Penh, which is described as "Matthew Watson's second film about the consequences of Cambodia's 'virginity trade'". Sounds unbearably sad! The as-yet-unfinished film is due later in the year.I'm a huge fan of Cave/Ellis' work on The Proposition soundtrack and The... more
