Promising that "I'm going back to doing what I do best," Bob Weinstein is revving up franchises and genre films for Dimension, with familiar faces onboard (e.g., Neve Campbell has just signed for "Scream 4") and a new emphasis on 3D.
"Scream 4" will start production in April or May as the first of a new trilogy, and the company is talking to Wes Craven to direct, Weinstein reports. In addition to Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette will return to the "Scream" franchise.
Robert Rodriguez is writing "Spy Kids 4," which he will direct in 3D. The movie will be made in partnership with Disney and will start shooting in March, Weinstein said.
In addition, the company wants to shoot "Halloween III" in 3D, aiming to release it in October 2010. Dimension also is remaking the cult classic "Children of the Corn."
"I'm heading back to my franchise films," Weinstein declared, citing plans to shoot sequels to "Hellraiser" and "Scanners" in 3D. Also on the slate are remakes of "Short Circuit" and "An American Werewolf in London." "These films are our strength, and we are committed to doing them in style."
The first two "Scream" pictures grossed more than $100 million each, while "Scream 3" grossed $89 million in the U.S.
Weinstein also said that "The Road" will open wide Nov. 25 in some 800 theaters.
In response to a query, Weinstein said, "There is no question that financing is readily available to produce and market these films." He added: "I am eager to expand our scope in the 3D business."Promising that "I'm going back to doing what I do best," Bob Weinstein... more

more on the Polanski news...
“We’re calling on every film-maker we can to help fix this terrible situation,” Weinstein said. Sources close to The Weinstein Company said the mogul would reach out to Hollywood to lobby against any move to bring Polanski to the US, where he could face up to 50 years in jail.
It is understood the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office learned of Polanski’s trip to the Zurich Film Festival and presented an arrest warrant to Swiss authorities who promptly took him into custody. The Oscar winning director of The Pianist was due to give a masterclass at the festival on Sunday.
However the timing of the arrest has puzzled observers, who pointed out Polanski had owned a property in Switzerland and made a number of visits prior to his detention. Indeed the director’s agent, ICM chief Jeff Berg, said the film-maker was in Switzerland this summer editing The Ghost.
Swiss Justice Ministry spokesman Guido Balmer rejected suggestions that the arrest was political. Unsubstantiated online reports claim the incident may be a gambit by Switzerland to curry favour with US authorities in light of the unfolding tax evasion scandal involving the Swiss banking giant UBS and American account holders.
In a statement issued on Sunday Polanski’s attorneys said: “We were unaware of any extradition being sought and separate counsel will be retained for those proceedings.”
After Weinstein picked up international theatrical rights last January to the HBO documentary Roman Polanski: Wanted And Desired, which highlights legal irregularities in the case against the director, he intimated the film might play a part in getting the charges dropped.more on the Polanski news...

Now, which moron at The Weinstein Company thinks this is an appropriate fake trailer to hawk Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds? People are being fooled by this abomination: a trailer for a Nazi propaganda film that went up on Apple today from "Arien Productions" glorifying a hero of the Third Reich. The film "Nation's Pride" is advertised as having an exclusive engagement in Paris (at the theater where Basterds has a plot point) and the opening line of the narration is "From Reich Minister Dr Joseph Goebbels..." This isn't clever marketing, folks. It's classless. (Nikke Finke)

"Add "Escape From Planet Earth" to Weinstein Co.'s growing list of headaches.
The computer-animated 3-D stereoscopic movie, which was announced in 2006, has been beset with script problems and won't be ready for release until January 2011 at the earliest. A story about aliens plotting to escape from Area 51, the secret Nevada location famous for non-Earthling tourists, "Escape" was previously targeted for a 2010 release.
Though the studio has had some recent critical success with "The Reader," for which Kate Winslet took home an Oscar for best actress, the company's annual output has been minimal. "Escape From Planet Earth" is the latest Weinstein film to be delayed for various reasons.
Other Weinstein Co. films that have had their release dates put off over the last 18 months include "All Good Things," "Youth in Revolt," "The Road," "Shanghai" and "Piranha 3-D."
Last month the studio, headed by brothers Harvey and Bob Weinstein, retained financial consulting firm Miller Buckfire & Co. to restructure its debt and raise funds.
In the case of "Escape From Planet Earth," the problems are creative. Production, which is not expected to resume until August or early fall, was halted because of script issues, several people involved in the production said. The film is being written by Tony Leech and Cory Edwards, the team behind "Hoodwinked!," Weinstein Co.'s '06 hit release that took in $110 million worldwide. Leech is also directing the movie....""Add "Escape From Planet Earth" to Weinstein Co.'s growing list of... more
