As surprised fans and critics of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin traded guesses behind her decision to resign more than a year before her term ends, the former vice presidential candidate offered few hints at her political future, except to say she'd gone fishing.
Palin has stayed out of the public eye since she made the announcement Friday, but said in a Twitter update Sunday she was looking forward to joining her family as they commercially fish in Bristol Bay. But to many Alaskans, Palin has been off the job for awhile already, acting as a disengaged presence around the state Capitol since she returned from the presidential campaign trail last year.
"She had a surprising amount of disinterest in state government after November," said state Rep. Les Gara, D-Anchorage. "This state has a lot of problems, and she showed a complete lack of interest in solving them."
In Alaska, Palin has become a polarizing figure and the focus of multiple ethics complaints filed against her with the state personnel board. She has taken a beating from Senate Democrats over many of her recent appointments, including an attorney general candidate who became the first Cabinet appointment ever rejected by the Alaska Legislature.
But with all the thorny issues enveloping her in Alaska, Palin's quitting may be more about something simpler: cutting her losses.
Things weren't likely to improve, if she stayed in office. She faces a potential veto override of nearly $29 million in federal stimulus funds for energy efficiency programs, money she had rejected in fear that it could bind the state to federal building mandates.
"The drumbeat of adverse news coverage from Alaska would likely have continued and intensified had she remained governor," said Juneau economist and longtime Alaska political watcher Gregg Erickson. "It would have become an increasing liability to her national campaign."
A day after abruptly announcing she would soon give up her job as governor, Palin indicated on a social networking site that she would take on a larger, national role, citing a "higher calling" to unite the country along conservative lines. In the last few months, Palin had laid the groundwork for a possible presidential run, establishing a political action committee. As surprised fans and critics of Alaska Gov. "Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell of Alaska said Sunday that Gov. Sarah Palin’s decision to resign was largely prompted by the personal legal costs of the ethics investigations against her.
Ms. Palin announced on Friday that she would quit her job near the end of the month and turn the reins of state government over to Mr. Parnell, who like the governor is a Republican.
At the news conference, Ms. Palin cited numerous reasons for quitting, including more than $500,000 in legal fees that she and her husband, Todd, have incurred because of 15 ethics complaints filed against her during her two and a half years as governor. She said all of the complaints had been dismissed, but she still had to pay lawyers to defend her.
Mr. Parnell said Ms. Palin called him into her office on Wednesday night to tell him she was resigning.
“I think what I heard from the governor,” Mr. Parnell said on “Fox News Sunday,” “really had to do with the weight on her, the concern she had for the cost of all the ethics investigations and the like — the way that that weighed on her with respect to her inability to just move forward Alaska’s agenda on behalf of Alaskans in the current context of the environment. So that’s what I saw.”
Mr. Parnell, who is scheduled to take over for Ms. Palin on July 26, said it was costing the State of Alaska about $2 million just to pay for the staff to deal with the records requests from the ethics complaints.
“That was just over the top, and I think she used the word insane in her remarks,” Mr. Parnell said.
Ms. Palin, who was Senator John McCain’s running mate on last year’s Republican presidential ticket, is leaving office 18 months before the end of her first term as governor. In her comments on Friday, she acknowledged the toll that the ethics investigations had taken on her and her family.
But in the often-rambling announcement, Ms. Palin also sounded at one point as though she was quitting politics entirely and at another as though she had an eye on higher office, which immediately led to renewed speculation about the possibility of her running for president in 2012. She promised supporters that in the coming days, she would provide details — on her social networking Facebook and Twitter sites — on her reasons for leaving the governorship so abruptly.
In a posting on her Facebook page on Saturday, Ms. Palin appeared to indicate that she would seek a larger, national role — citing what she said was a “higher calling” to push for conservative causes nationally.""Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell of Alaska said Sunday that Gov. Sarah Palin’s... more

Senator Ensign, Governors Palin and Sanford all prominent members of their party and legitimate contenders for the next Republican nominee for President have once again proven the adage - they go in threes. More shocking then the recent rash of celebrity deaths is the death of these political careers. Much like the death of pop star Michael Jackson, the methods of the politicians demise is most intriguing.
What is truly afoot here? Has the public intellect finally evolved to the point where the mindless madness of the Republican mantra is no longer effective? Is this a super secret plot of Mitt Romney's or Rudy Giuliani perhaps? More likely than not they are the victims of the instant information age making the politics of hypocrisy all but obsolete. Failure to adjust, to adapt is thinning the heard and these are the latest and most prominent casualties.Senator Ensign, Governors Palin and Sanford all prominent members of their party and... more

I am now looking ahead and how we can advance this country together with our values of less government intervention, greater energy independence, stronger national security, and much-needed fiscal restraint. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Alaska Governor Sarah Palin said Friday she will resign this month and will not run for re-election as governor.
"I'm not seeking re-election," Palin told a news conference at which she said she would transfer authority to Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell.
Palin was Republican presidential candidate John McCain's vice presidential running mate in last year's election and rallied the party's conservative base. There has been speculation that she would seek to be the Republican Party's presidential candidate in 2012.
"We know we can effect positive change outside government at this moment in time," she said.
Palin said her decision came after much "prayer and consideration." She did not want to waste time on "political blood sport" and cited public criticism of her actions and her family since the 2008 campaign.

Sarah Palin’s sudden resignation as Alaska’s governor may be the result of a soon to break scandal involving the building of a sports complex while she was Mayor of Wasilla.
It is rumored that federal indictments are pending involving construction projects in Wasilla dating back to 2002. The indictments may involve corruption and embezzlement.
Spenard Building Supplies (SBS) was awarded the $13 million contract that created a long-term debt obligation for Wasilla. SBS is the largest building supply company in Alaska.
At the same time, the Palins built a 3,500 sq. ft., two-story home on the shores of Lake Lucille. Todd Palin said that he built the home with the help of “buddies.” It is reported that the material used for the construction of the home appears to be the same as that used in the Wasilla Sports Complex, including the windows and the wood. SBS supplied the material for the Palin home.

Sources say embezzlement scandal, federal indictments may soon break concerning use of Wasilla Sport Complex building materials for Palin's home...
"This clearly happened so quickly that Palin hasn't even had a chance to come up with a coherent cover story for her resignation. ... Remember that based on the public record, Palin is a wildly unethical public official, guilty at a minimum of numerous instances of abusing her authority as governor. And a lot of very damaging information has come out about her in the last few days --- though mainly embarrassing information about her character rather than new evidence of bad acts. I would not be surprised if this latest round of revelations shook something else loose that we haven't heard about yet."Sources say embezzlement scandal, federal indictments may soon break concerning use of... more

In a stunning move Sarah Palin will resign as Governor of the state of Alaska. Palin, a 45 year old Republican, will resign from office towards the end of July and return to private life, leaving office before the end of her first term. This bizarre decision by last year's Republican vice presidential candidate has lead to rampant speculation.

Sarah Palin made a surprise announcement Friday that she will resign as governor of Alaska in a few weeks, saying she will try to "effect positive change" from outside government.
Palin, the former Republican vice presidential candidate in 2008, hastily called a news conference at her home in suburban Wasilla, giving such short notice that only a few reporters actually made it to the announcement.
She is handing the reins over to Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell, who will be sworn in at the governor's picnic in Fairbanks on July 26. Parnell and most of Palin's cabinet and Palin's family were at the announcement.
Palin was vague about why exactly she is stepping down rather than finish out her first term, which ends in 2010.
There was no immediate word as to why she will step down before the end of her first term. Some have speculated in the past that Palin may be interested in a run for president in 2012, but she did not mention running for another office at her press conference. Sources told NBC's Andrea Mitchell that it appears Palin is out of politics for good.

The White House was in a celebratory mood today after President Obama effectively won a second term in office following the Alaska governor's announcement.
Democratic strategists went home and the nascent 2012 re-election campaign was wound down as the former Republican vice-presidential candidate stepped down as governor due to falling popularity at home and blatant positioning for a presidential run.
