“Over Time” is a phenomenal animated short film by the directing team of Oury Atlan, Thibaut Berland and Damien Ferrie from the French animation school Supinfoco. The film is simply amazing; accomplished CG is used to animate, and a black-and-white palette with a powerful musical score lend its finest scenes a haunting, operatic grandeur.
The film tells the story of the Muppets who continue on after the death of their master, Jim Henson. It presents a heart-rending tale of the sad mystery of death. Common lore holds that the first stage of grief is always denial, but that’s the only possibility if you’re not even able to conceive of death (such as in the case of a young child). It’s as if you were a puppet, and your own creator died. You could just valiantly try to bring him back to life, the same way he once did with you.
And so it is in “Over Time,” where the small fabric puppets find their creator lying on his bench, dead. But our sad little creatures don’t understand that he died, for they had never been confronted with such a concept. Instead, they devote all of their subsequent efforts to incorporate Henson’s body into their own daily routine, as they very slowly come to terms with his death.
This piece includes a number of black-and-white photographs, as well as the amazing animated short film.

"The 80's wasn't all about glam rock and rebelling against "the man", it was also a lot about Cocaine in the music world. Bands in the 80's did a lot of crazy stuff, Ozzy pee'd on the Alamo and bite the head off a bat, and a dove. Twisted Sister was wearing more makeup than any of the girls you knew and KISS was taking the world by storm with awesome rock.
Much of the music of the 80's was about going to the extreme excess of rockstardom. One great example is Motley Crue, those dudes partied up the the 80's like nobodies business! I mean, really, half of their music is about partying down and rocking and rolling all of the time. The other bands of the time weren't any different though, ACDC was drinking and taking pills, everybody was getting messed up. It was all part of the culture of Rock N' Roll at the time. "

Amy Winehouse, the iconic British soul singer, was found dead on Saturday in her London home. She was 27. The English singer found international fame with her smoky, hip-hop take on retro-soul, but she soon became a fixture of tabloid newspapers as her problems with drugs and alcohol brought about a strikingly public career collapse.
Ms. Winehouse became one of the most acclaimed young singers of the 2000s, selling millions of albums, winning five Grammy Awards and kicking off the British trend of retro-soul and R&B that continues today. Ms. Winehouse had a public image that seemed almost defiantly self-destructive. In her songs, Winehouse sang alcohol-soaked regrets of failed romances, and for many listeners the lyrics to the song “Rehab,” which won her three of the five Grammy Awards she received in 2008, crystallized her public persona: “They tried to make me go to rehab,” she sang, “I said, No, no, no.”
Ms. Winehouse had not released an album since “Back to Black,” but recently she appeared to be trying to revive her career. However, last month she canceled a brief European comeback tour after a last-ever disastrous performance in Belgrade, during which she appeared too intoxicated to perform properly.
This piece includes color photographs, a photo-gallery and two music videos, “Rehab” and her last-ever 2011 performance of “Back to Black” in Belgrade.

In the photo-series “Texters,” street photographer Joseph Holmes captures amazing, wondrous images of texters in NYC, encouraging you to have a little peek. Have you ever texted on the street, in the park, at the beach or in a coffee shop? This collection of photographs shows people who look mesmerized as they pull out their phones and text, tweet and connect to something other than the world all around them. The pictures show a number of individuals who seem to be shockingly focused on whatever they’re texting: a young woman texting while walking in the rain, a businessman in a park and a women looking frozen in time as she gazes into her phone.

“Tribute to René” is a two-minute animated short art film, a collaborative creation by Box of Toys Audio with flipEvil design studio. The composition is a tribute to the Belgian surrealist artist, René Magritte, which is a bespoke piano piece in and around the dream-like state of the visuals.
Magritte became well known for his paintings that challenged observers’ perceptions of reality and forced viewers to become more sensitive to their surroundings. His works constantly play with reality and illusion, displaying a juxtaposition of ordinary objects in an unusual context and giving new meanings to familiar things.
This piece includes colorful pictures, a photo-gallery and the short film.

The 42nd Annual Chicago Gay Pride Parade kicks off from the northside Lakeview neighborhood at noon on Sunday, led by Chicago’s new mayor, Rahm Emanuel. It will be the first time in a long time that a sitting mayor has appeared in the parade, a salute to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
Emanuel is a regular at the parade, having appeared at the festivities almost every year while he served in Congress. He has been a relentless advocate of gay causes, including HIV/AIDS funding, civil unions and gay marriage. Joining him in the parade will be Governor Pat Quinn, recently who signed the Illinois civil union legislation, as Illinois became the sixth state to allow civil unions or their equivalent, giving same-sex couples the same state-level rights that come with marriage.
The parade usually draws around a half-million celebrants, but coming right on the heels of winning the long-sought right for same-sex couples to enter into civil unions and the historic passage of the New York bill allowing same sex marriage Friday night, this parade is expected to swell far beyond a half-million rainbow-clad spectators.
This piece includes a number of color photographs and two parade videos.

“Getting High in Venice Beach, LA" is a very trippy short film by The Cool Hunter, which invites you to experience a state of floating ecstasy without even needing to leave your chair or coconut tree, and whenever the desire strikes you.
In the 1950s and 60s, Venice Beach became a center for the Beat Generation, with a mind-altering explosion of young counterculture artists, poets and writers. Even today, Venice Beach is a summertime hotbed of activity, which includes the beach, the promenade or boardwalk, the fabulously hot Muscle Beach, the handball courts, the paddle tennis courts, Skate Dancing plaza, the numerous beach volleyball courts and the renowned Venice basketball courts that are known all across the country for their high level of streetball. And “Getting High in Venice Beach, LA” takes you on a dizzily buoyant trip through all of Venice Beach, accompanied by Brian Eno's dreamy soundtrack, “Deep Blue Day.”
This piece includes a number of color photographs, as well as the dreamy short film.

“Helios: Eadweard Muybridge in a Time of Change” is an exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), which presents the first-ever retrospective examination of all aspects of artist Eadweard Muybridge’s pioneering photography. Best known for his groundbreaking studies of animals and humans in motion, what a magnificent photographer Eadweard Muybridge was and what a brilliant eye he had is too often overlooked. In addition to his iconic studies of animals in motion, Muybridge (1830-1904) was also an innovative and successful landscape and survey photographer, documentary artist, inventor and war correspondent.
The works in this exhibition have been brought together from 38 different collections and include a number of Muybridge’s photographs of Yosemite Valley, images of Alaska and the Pacific coast, pictures from Panama and Guatemala and urban panoramas of San Francisco, most of which were published under the pseudonym “Helios.” The exhibition also includes examples from Muybridge’s experimental series of sequential stop-motion photographs, such as his masterpieces “The Horse in Motion” and “Animal Locomotion.”
This piece includes a number of vintage photographs from the exhibition, a photo-gallery, a music video and a stop-motion animation.

“Plan of the City” is an amazing new short film, a 13-minute animated collage combining animation with live action, conceived and directed by the brilliant young filmmaker and animator Joshua Frankel. The film is about the architecture of New York City, in which New York’s buildings blast off rocket-like into outer space and resettle on Mars. “Plan of the City” was created in collaboration with composer Judd Greenstein and the NOW Ensemble, an acclaimed “indie classical” chamber ensemble. Members of the ensemble, including Greenstein, feature prominently in the film as live actors set within the animated framework.
NOW Ensemble is a composer/performer collective that has quickly established itself as one of the most prominent and promising sounds in 21st century chamber music. NOW’s “alt-classical” performance of Greenstein’s new composition “Change” genuinely conveys the mood of new classical music with its indie-rock sensibility, combined with amplification and a synthesizer or guitar. The film proves to be one of the best matches of visuals to music that you’re likely to experience. Just as old buildings are transformed into new homes in Frankel’s film, this project seems to forge new ground in the old and well-loved territory of music video production.
This piece includes a number of color photographs, as well as the remarkable short film/music video.

“Downtown” is a wonderful series of stunning black-and-white fine art nude photographs by Cyril Helnwein, shot guerrilla style at night on the streets of downtown LA, using only available ambient light from street signs and lamp posts. The photographs are accompanied by a short film presenting a video slide show of the images from the “Downtown” series. “Booty Dance” is a gleefully sexy one-minute short film, also by LA photographer Cyril Helnwein, comprised of behind-the-scenes footage of a model fooling around during a photo shoot. The unforgettable face was drawn on the model by the legendary comic artist Dan Panosian.

During the course of his artistic career, David LaChapelle was hired by Andy Warhol, fired by Madonna, photographed Pamela Anderson, Lady Gaga, and Hillary Clinton, and made a star of the transgender personality Amanda Lepore. He earned millions and spent much of that on his self-financed movie about an urban dance form created in the rough neighborhoods of South Central Los Angeles. When the film, “Rize,” failed to attract a large audience, the weary LaChapelle packed up his career and disappeared.
Now, many years later, LaChapelle is back in New York briefly, overseeing his one-man show at a Madison Avenue art gallery and a separate commissioned installation that is opening in the lobby of the Lever House on Park Avenue. With their erotic gloss, their sizzling aesthetics and their slick production values, the photographs at Michelman Fine Art are recognizably the work of a man who in his editorial work for “Vanity Fair,” “Interview,” “Rolling Stone” and others photographed David Duchovny dressed in Lycra bondage trousers, Kanye West as Black Jesus, a turbaned Elizabeth Taylor looking like a $5 fortune teller, Eminem naked but for a well-placed prop and other stars like Tupac Shakur (wearing soap bubbles), Angelina Jolie and Lady Gaga baring their souls for the camera, along with a good deal more.
At the Lever House, however, the artist has returned to techniques he employed when, at the very beginning of his career, long before he became the go-to video director for pop music divas, he used naïve, childlike forms like linked paper chains to make his work. In the space that in the past has presented exhibitions of works by artists such as Barbara Kruger and Damien Hirst, Mr. LaChapelle has hung the chains from walls and ceiling in looping festoons. At first glance, the stapled links only look like colorful decorations for a children’s party, but when viewed more closely they reveal images of naked bodies, as an allegory for human connection.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution color photographs, a photo-gallery and two music-videos with artwork by LaChapelle.

“You Are Here: Architecture and Experience" is an exhibition of works by two contemporary artists at the Carnegie Museum of Art that examines the formative power of architecture, or how architectural environments influence our experiences and perceptions of the world. The exhibition brings together the photographs of German artist Candida Höfer and a video, photographs and etchings by French artist Cyprien Gaillard. Both artists express the formative power of architecture in ways that are different, but also complementary.
Candida Höfer’s lush color photographs of ornately palatial historical and contemporary interior spaces are usually devoid of humans, embodying a sense of peaceful quietude. Yet, they also reveal details that draw the viewer into considerations of what each place might mean. In Höfer’s photographs, the experience of each room becomes completely subjective: Is it stifling in its grandiosity, or perhaps enlightening in its lavish beauty? We see spaces as moments of history and definers of class, the anachronisms, vanities, and beauty of spaces; the humanity, in all its sins and glories, that can inhabit a built environment, without so much as a glimpse of any humans. Each space can help us decide our point of view, but Höfer seems to say that deciphering these spaces is a task ultimately left up to each of us.
Contrasting with Höfer, Cyprien Gaillard’s video “Desniansky Raion,” his photographs and meticulously detailed etchings all probe the human legacy of Modernist high-rise housing blocks. Constructed after World War II throughout the United States, Europe and the Eastern Bloc to provide decent housing, these buildings too often have become warehouses for the poor and incubators of crime and antisocial behaviors. While Gaillard’s video alternates between order and destructive violence, packing a powerful and direct emotional punch, Höfer’s photographs embody a kind of quietude that encourages slow, sustained exploration of meanings that build through the accumulation of detail. Nevertheless, both works are equally affecting and bring the viewer into the realm of architectural experience with compelling intensity. Höfer and Gaillard capture the constant vacillation between what we make of our architectural environments, and what they make of us.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution photographs, black-and-white etchings, a photo-gallery, a documentary short film and a music video.

“Jellyfish Lake Palau” is a beautiful, dreamy short film/music video artfully filmed by photographer/videographer Sarosh Jacob, with music by Radiohead. Now, you’ve probably heard of swimming with sharks before, but swimming with jellyfish? Swimming in water that’s filled with millions of jellyfish may be most people’s worst nightmare. But for visitors to the island of Eil Malik in the Republic of Palau, it’s the main attraction.
Twelve thousand years ago these jellyfish became trapped in a natural basin on the island when the ocean receded. With no predators amongst them for thousands of years, the jellyfish evolved into a new species that lost most of their stinging ability, since they no longer had to protect themselves. They are pretty much harmless to humans, but it’s not possible to scuba dive in this lake because the nutrient rich layer at around 50 feet and below contains hydrogen sulphide that is highly toxic to humans. If a scuba diver was to swim in that layer, the toxins would enter the body through the skin and that exposure could be fatal. However, snorkeling is perfectly safe and Palau is the only place in the world where you can have the surreal experience of swimming through millions of jellyfish.
This piece includes a number of beautiful high-resolution color photographs, as well as the artistically stunning short film/music video.

At the beginning of 2010, Big Scary announced they would be releasing four EPs dedicated to each of the seasons. Inspired by Mother Nature, each release was written and recorded in each respective season, and promised to be as varied as the seasons themselves. Inspired by the flurry of rich colour in autumn, the first drops of rain in winter, the blossom of new life in spring and the majesty of a summer thunderstorm.
Widely tipped as ones to watch by industry insiders, some thought the four seasons project a brave undertaking for the independent duo, doubting their ability to consistently release and tour this varied material. Instead, The Big Scary Four Seasons has served to show the breadth of talent and styles possessed by the versatile duo, with Big Scary recently announced as one of Triple J ’s 2010 ‘NextCrop ’ artists.
The Big Scary Four Seasons compilation taps into talents which have seen Big Scary’s Tom Iansek and Jo Syme tour with a diverse range of bands including Editors, Florence and The Machine, British India, Vasco Era, Birds of Tokyo, Little Red, Midlake and Hungry Kids of Hungary.
The Big Scary Four Seasons also includes four new tracks from Summer, which will be released exclusively as part of The Big Scary Four Seasons on May 11th through iTunes.
