The "Keep Austin Weird" slogan
reaches far beyond a marketing campaign.[citation needed] Austin is the self-proclaimed "live music capital of the world" and the people of Austin reflect a friendly, accepting culture of artistic and individual expression that maintains the city as a vibrant and eclectic creative center and haven for an LGBT community, intellectual community, community of naturalists and environmentalists, and for subcultures and people(s) who are not mainstream. In a mostly conservative Texas, Austin is "Weird" because of that and because it continues to be liberal and progressive politically, socially, in culture, in the arts and in music, among other things. "Keep Austin Weird" moves beyond a mere slogan, to reflect the dynamics that encompass Austin.
In January 2009 alone, over 1700 live music venues were supported.[9] In addition, multiple festivals such as SXSW, Austin City Limits, Armadillo Bazaar[10] and the Batfest, among many others are highly attended with enthusiastic and often large audiences.
"Keep Austin Weird" seemingly promotes an independent, anti-corporate Austin, yet Outhouse Designs trademarked the slogan in 2003 and has used it ever since. Andrew Allemann, host of a satirical "Make Austin Normal" website, asks: "How can you have a commercial slogan that screams anti-corporation?"
Despite this criticism, the Keep Austin Weird campaign has proven successful. In April 2003, Borders bookstore withdrew plans to build a store near local bookstore BookPeople and local music shop Waterloo Records. In an article published by the Daily Texan, Abhinav Kumar writes:
A case study by Civic Economics, a strategic planning consulting firm, found that "local merchants generate substantially greater economic impact than chain retailers." The study revealed that if someone was to spend $100 at a chain like Borders, only $13 would be funneled back into the Austin economy. However, if you spent $100 at a local business such as Waterloo Records, about $45 would go back to fuel the Austin economy.

Weird Austin: Hippie Hollow ( git nekked,....whooo - -hooooo! )
If the idea of going swimming with a bunch of naked hippies conjures images of floating long gray ponytails attached to wrinkly bodies, and the subsequent eww reaction, it's important to remember that Lake Travis' skinnydipping central, Hippie Hollow, earned its name in the "Wonder Years" era of the late '60s, when hippies were young and cool.
Austin's tradition of officially embracing its weirdness and incorporating it into the city's identity may not have started with Hippie Hollow, but it's a long-time example. The nickname became official in 1985, when Travis County leased the location and renamed it from the way-less-colorful McGregor Park. That's also the date the park officially became a clothing-optional swimming hole, though it spent decades before that as a place for nudists and naturalists to take a dip in an unofficial capacity.

Drilling in the Arctic waters of the U.S. may become as contested an issue as the Keystone Pipeline XL in up-coming months. Scientists, congress members, and ordinary Americans have all come out in large numbers against the Obama Administration's leases for exploratory drilling in the Beaufort Sea and the Chuckchi Sea.
Last month 573 scientists signed a letter against opening the Arctic up to drilling until more research can be done in the sensitive area. In addition, a letter signed by 60 Congress members has been sent to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar noting that the Deepwater Horizon disaster occurred only two years ago. Finally, nearly half a million Americans (400,000) signed a petition against drilling in the Arctic. Critics of the Obama Administration's leases say there is no coherent plan to clean-up a spill in the icy, remote Arctic ecosystem, which already embattled by climate change.
"The Arctic is the last wild ocean on the planet. Its waters and the abundant life they support are simply too sensitive to be drilled—especially since neither the oil industry nor scientists have identified a proven way to contain or clean up a spill in the Arctic’s extreme conditions," Chuck Clusen, Alaska Project Director with the Natural Resources Defense Council, said in a press release. "At the very least, there should be no plan to lease these areas until key scientific studies have been done and until the oil and gas industry can demonstrate its ability to contain and clean up a spill."
The letter from scientists asked the administration to "to follow through on its commitment to science" by following recommendations made by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and refrain from drilling until more research can be done.
Still, drilling in the Arctic could begin as early as this summer by Royal Dutch Shell. The oil company argues that it has a meticulous oil-response plan even given the intense conditions of drilling in the Arctic, including response vessels standing by. Shell Alaska Vice President Pete Slaiby told the Associated Press that the company would be ready with a capping stack, similar to what was used to stop the Gulf oil spill in 2010 after the well leaked for three months.
Critics of Arctic drilling argue that given the extreme weather conditions, icy waters, and the remoteness of any oil well, it would currently be impossible to clean-up an oil spill adequately. Furthermore, clean-up efforts would almost certainly have to stop during the long Arctic winter. Currently the federal government is asking Shell to stop operations 38 days before the seasonal sea ice would arrive to make certain an oil spill doesn't occur at the end of the season. Shell is trying to overturn this ruling.
"If the Obama administration were making its decision based on science rather than politics, drilling in the Arctic would be a nonstarter," Rebecca Noblin, the Alaska Director with Center for Biological Diversity (CBD). "The Arctic Ocean is America’s last best wilderness. Launching massive industrial drilling operations risks America’s Arctic legacy for oil company profits."

I Otaku ; Identifying as a J-culture enthusiast
by Colette Bennett
[ When I first started watching anime, I had never heard of the word otaku. However, in 1983 Japanese author Akio Nakamori wrote a little series called "An Investigation of Otaku" in loli manga mag Manga Burikko, and the word caught on as a Japanese slang word referring to a person with an obsessive interest, specifically in manga, anime or videogames. Sound familiar?
One thing a lot of American Japanophiles may not know, however, is that otaku is often considered a disparaging term by the Japanese. ]

OCCUPY GUY FAWKES
A persistent image oft seen among the Occupy milieu these days is a mask depicting a sallow, smirking, moustached alleged likeness of Guy Fawkes, a nearly legendary British failed revolutionary who plotted to blow up Parliament some four centuries ago. The mask was initially created by David Lloyd for Alan Moore’s 1982 graphic novel, V for Vendetta, whose protagonist seeks to destroy the government. Over the Guy Fawkes Day weekend — "Remember, remember, the Fifth of November: the gunpowder treason and plot" — Michael Cavna at ComicRiffs asked Lloyd for his thoughts on the mass appropriation of his mask:

The Disney Princesses are a controversial subject among some parents. Either they're considered iconic reminders of Disney's animated classics, or ubiquitous examples of the studio's marketing genius. Worse still, some cultural critics believe the princesses are dangerous, anti-feminist role models for young girls.
But not all princesses are alike. Disney's reigning beauties all have something to offer, even the old-school ones who are more damsels-in-distress than their contemporary counterparts. Moviefone has ranked the princesses according to the example they set for the girls who love them and want to be them.

“A Good Wife” is a brilliant five-minute animated short film by the talented Toronto-based illustrator W. Scott Forbes, featuring the artist’s signature minimalist painterly artwork. The film presents a quiet tragedy of mid-1900′s infidelity, the tale of a woman who is in utter shock over her torrid sexual affair with a man who is not her husband. Tormented by painful regret, she decides not to disclose her infidelity to her family. Thus, the family members carry on as though nothing is wrong, going about their daily lives in blissful ignorance. “A Good Wife” provides powerful imagery and music to narrate its plot, successfully leaving viewers feeling emotionally invested despite its short five-minute duration.
This piece includes colorful illustrations and the animated short film.

“Prom Night” is a wild, high-energy eight-minute narrative short film by director/performer/choreographer Celia Rowlson-Hall, which premiered at SXSW last year. Rowlson-Hall stars as a/the/your prom-date in this beautiful, surreal, reference-laden piece. The film takes a very simple concept, a look at the cultural trappings that come with dream girls and trips to the prom, and knocks it out of the park.
Hall, who stars in the film, looks straight into the camera and takes the viewer through a dance in an empty school gymnasium decorated for the prom. While The Ronettes’ “Be My Little Baby” plays, through a series of wardrobe alterations and spontaneous costume and hairstyle changes, Hall leads the viewer through a litany of archetypal lovers: from the holy virginal, to Lolita, to Carrie. “Prom Night” is such an engrossing dance/performance short film that you won’t dare take your eyes off of it.
This piece includes color photographs and the completely absorbing short film.

Originally created in support of charity, the popularity of the Dieux Du Stade Calendars has been credited for the increased fame of the Stade Français rugby team, as well as for rugby in general, in France. During the calendar’s 10 years, the basic concept hasn’t changed: the calendar features nude and semi-nude photographs of members of Stade Français, the Paris-based domestic French rugby team, and in more recent years, it includes players from other rugby union clubs. Photographed by Francois Rousseau, in his 3rd collaboration with Dieux Du Stade, the theme for 2012 tells the story of “survivors of a lost world, trying to get on board a ship.”
This piece includes a number of high-resolution color photographs, a photo-gallery and a two-minute documentary short film.

Hi All
This is a journal of my ideas my observations and my dreams, including the steps i am taking to achieve those dreams.
My intent is to change the world or rather to influence the future vision of the world.
This is a list of the blogs i am publishing:
#1)The list of universal human needs, i believe this list holds self evident paths to happiness, clarity and world change, our relationship with these human needs, our understanding and practice of those needs fulfills the balance each of us seeks. think of an activity and hold it up to the list of universal human needs and see how many needs are being met by that activity. Try to practice all human needs evenly for balance.

“Born to Die” is the new music video directed by the celebrated photographer/filmmaker Yoann Lemoine, from the chart-topping major label album debut by 25-year-old retro chanteuse Lana Del Rey. A number of malcontent bloggers have taken snarky aim at Del Rey, taking issue with the size of her fantastic pout, with the fact that she changed her name from the far less exotic Lizzy Grant, and for presenting an image they feel is just too cool to be real. Nevertheless, Del Rey comes across like a gangster Lauren Bacall, finds musical inspiration in the bright lights of Monte Carlo and can sing with enough grace and longing to break your heart after just one verse.
This piece includes color photographs and the music video.
