Stay classy, Catholic Diocese of Green Bay. A seventh grade girls basketball player was held out of one of her team’s games recently as discipline for saying the words “I love you” in the language of her family’s Native American tribe. It happened in a classroom at Shawano (Wisc.) Sacred Heart School. When Miranda Washinawatok told two of her classmates “I love you” in her native Menominee language, her teacher lost it, scolding her and declaring “How would you like it if I started talking Polish?”
The even crazier thing is a dude on yahoo sports put in a comment of "You are in America, speak English" and didn't even realize how massively ironic his comment was.Stay classy, Catholic Diocese of Green Bay. A seventh grade girls basketball player... more

Timeless quotes from the Animal Farm, which was Goerge Orwell's biting social commentary of the Soviet Union under Communism.
After Tyranny is Established:
"ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL, BUT SOME ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS"
- George Orwell, Animal Farm, Ch. 10
Majority Can't Be Trusted:
"No one believes more firmly than Comrade Napoleon that all animals are equal. He would be only too happy to let you make your decisions for yourselves. But sometimes you might make the wrong decisions, comrades, and then where should we be?"
- George Orwell, Animal Farm, Ch. 5
Wartime Propaganda:
"It was given out that the animals there practiced cannibalism, tortured one another with red-hot horseshoes, and had their females in common. This was what came of rebelling against the laws of Nature, Frederick and Pilkington said."
- George Orwell, Animal Farm, Ch. 4
Terrorist Threat Used for Political Control:
"If a window was broken or a drain was blocked up, someone was certain to say that Snowball had come in the night and done it, and when the key of the store-shed was lost, the whole farm was convinced that Snowball had thrown it down the well. Curiously enough, they went on believing this even after the mislaid key was found under a sack of meal."
- George Orwell, Animal Farm, Ch. 7
Police State Resulted from Fear of Terrorism:
"they had come to a time when no one dared speak his mind, when fierce, growling dogs roamed everywhere, and when you had to watch your comrades torn to pieces after confessing to shocking crimes." Chapter 7
"some of the animals remembered--or thought they remembered--that the Sixth Commandment decreed 'No animal shall kill any other animal.' And though no one cared to mention it in the hearing of the pigs or the dogs, it was felt that the killings which had taken place did not square with this."
- George Orwell, Animal Farm, Ch. 8
Too Much Faith in Corrupt Government:
"It had become usual to give Napoleon the credit for every successful achievement and every stroke of good fortune. You would often hear one hen remark to another, 'Under the guidance of our Leader, Comrade Napoleon, I have laid five eggs in six days'; or two cows, enjoying a drink at the pool, would exclaim, 'Thanks to the leadership of Comrade Napoleon, how excellent this water tastes!'"
- George Orwell, Animal Farm, Ch. 8
Lies About Economic Decline:
"Reading out the figures in a shrill, rapid voice, he proved to them in detail that they had more oats, more hay, more turnips than they had had in Jones's day, that they worked shorter hours, that their drinking water was of better quality, that they lived longer, that a larger proportion of their young ones survived infancy, and that they had more straw in their stalls and suffered less from fleas."
- George Orwell, Animal Farm, Ch. 9
The Death of the Spirit of Liberty:
"No question now, what had happened to the faces of the pigs. The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which."

South street, Philadelphia, Harry's Occult Shop
I ask the universe to make me a instrument of influence for infinite good.
I was wandering around Philadelphia filming micro trash(cigaret buts, bottle caps, straws, wrappers etc. anything trash) for a documentary i am making.
I met a Parking enforcement officer at a Starbucks on Broad street, i asked him if he knew any streets close buy that had trash, he said
South street had a park that had plenty of trash to film. I grabbed my coffee and set out for south street, it was only a few blocks down Broad street.
I filmed some storm drains that had a lot of micro trash build up in and around them.
Down the street i saw a mural on the side of a building, an older looking sign hung from the store front
side of the same building HARRY'S OCCULT SHOP.
Curiosity and a question popped in to my mind.
I wondered if there was some thing to it,with heart and mind clear i walked in,
smiles greeted me as i walked in, a small blue sign stood out " WE AIM TO HELP".
Inside several customers waited to be helped. Shelves of glass bottles containing
herbs, anointing oils, sprinkling powders, roots, house sprays, boiling oils, along with crystals, candles and a assortment of talismans and amulets.
The shop had a very warm comfortable eclectic feel.
I walked to the back counter, after waiting a short while for a customer ahead of me,
an open faced man asked me if he could help. humm..
The question just seamed to pop out of my mouth;
I would like a blessing or a object that would help me do infinite good.
He complemented me on the request...
He said he didn't know but he wold ask one of the consultants.
As i waited at the counter i watched the man walk over to a black lady at the cash register, as he talked she broke into a broad smile that came from deep her eyes.
she said some thing to the broad faced man, nodding in reply, he walked back over to the counter.
He said; they think you should get a reading.
I had never thought about getting a "reading".
But following the omens was what i was hear to do. It took me some time to decide.
There was a line of people ahead of me signed up to be seen, they said it would be about hour.
I signed up.
I told them i would be back in an hour.
Wandering further down south street i found a book store, the shop owner asked me what i was doing and where i was going we talked for well over an hour.
Looking at my watch i realized i was late for my appointment, i abruptly left the book store and trotted down to the Harry's,
entering, the shop was abuzz, they seamed very excited that i had returned, it wasn't like i was the only one in there, i don't know, i didn't feel excited only open to possibility.
I felt my own energy emanating from my center, flowing out, i felt clear.
I paid and was directed back to a little nook.
I wouldn't call the gentleman a fortune teller, more of a guide,he started by cleansing the space then meditated for a couple of minutes.
He asked me a few questions i told him that i wanted to be a instrument for infinite good and then tossed some stones he had been shaking in his hand into a box,
he told me some one would come in to my life a love interest and that there name would start with a P or a B, i told him i wasn't seeking a love interest and that i had been single for going on seven years. He went on to say it was going to happen and that the universe was conspiring to make it happen.
The reading went on, the way i translated the rest of the reading was, some times guides appear and open doors or rather point out doors that one has over looked or closed,
he gave permission to open those doors, to open the doors of love and let the light flood in.
(Writing this i know now that i am an instrument of infinite good.)
After the reading i picked out two small crystals to carry with me to remind me of the infinite good all around and within me.
Every one seamed excited in a subtle building way.
I went on that day to film more trash, my focus was clear, my vision vivid.

The fleeting beauty of youth is captured in this spellbinding collection of raw, honest portraits of androgynous boys that documents the authenticity of youth, from London-based photographer Toyin Ibidapo. A tribute to the charged emotions of adolescence, Ibidapo’s first solo show “There’s No Such Thing as Perfect, But There’s Perfection in the Things We Love,” is currently on exhibition at the Doors Showcase Gallery in London.
Ibidapo is a fashion photographer who has collaborated with the late Alexander McQueen, super-stylist Nicola Formichetti and designer Kim Jones, as well as contributing to “Dazed & Confused,” “Arena Homme Plus” and SHOWstudio. The exhibition evolved from Ibidapo’s book “Cult of Boys,” which she describes as a “record of amazing moments and various chapters in my life as a photographer as well as the faces in this book. They represent themselves and they also represent me because it was my vision and they came into my world, some for years, others just once. But sometimes once is all you need, one photograph to remember a poetic moment forever. Seen through the eyes of the female gaze.”
This piece includes a number of mesmerizing color photographs, a photo-gallery and two richly creative musical documentary short films.

Search giant Google is about to take a quantum leap into next generation mobile computing with the forthcoming introduction of virtual reality glasses, according to people familiar with the project who spoke to The New York Times this week.
The glasses are expected to cost between $250 and $600, the Times noted, but Google isn’t talking about the project yet.
The glasses, which are said to look like a pair of Oakleys enhanced with an MP3 player, will come equipped with motion sensors, GPS, cameras, voice detection software and the Android operating system, which will enable Google to stream graphical enhancements over the real world, and see what their users see, all in real time.
People who’ve actually seen the glasses told the Times that they will create a new layer for the Internet, where companies can stream digital advertising possibly even layered over competitors’ real world ads.

“Welcome to My Home” is delightful documentary short film by Kelsey Holtaway and Mark Cersosimo at Departure/Arrival Films. Anthony Pisano is a sweet old man who sits on the sidewalk and invites passersby to browse the contents of his East Village home, an amber-lit apartment-space packed with antiques, photographs, knickknacks, figurines and watch parts, which might easily be confused with a rummage sale or second-hand shop.
But nothing in the collections Mr. Pisano has built throughout his life is for sale. Instead, for Mr. Pisano, the benefit of living in his East Village storefront is that it offers him a chance to meet people. He leaves the front door ajar, and blasts Frank Sinatra music into the street. Passersby peer at his collection of unusual items, like a Bill Clinton doll on an antique model boat. “The New York Times” reported in 2010 that Pisano “estimates he gives away 10 to 12 trinkets every day.”

From Edge -- To arrive at the edge of the world's knowledge, seek out the most complex and sophisticated minds, put them in a room together, and have them ask each other the questions they are asking themselves.
Scientists' greatest pleasure comes from theories that derive the solution to some deep puzzle from a small set of simple principles in a surprising way. These explanations are called "beautiful" or "elegant." Historical examples are Kepler's explanation of complex planetary motions as simple ellipses, Bohr's explanation of the periodic table of the elements in terms of electron shells, and Watson and Crick's double helix. Einstein famously said that he did not need experimental confirmation of his general theory of relativity because it "was so beautiful it had to be true."
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DEEP, ELEGANT, OR BEAUTIFUL EXPLANATION?
Since this question is about explanation, answers may embrace scientific thinking in the broadest sense: as the most reliable way of gaining knowledge about anything, including other fields of inquiry such as philosophy, mathematics, economics, history, political theory, literary theory, or the human spirit. The only requirement is that some simple and non-obvious idea explain some diverse and complicated set of phenomena.

Update: "Welcome Home" has been named a winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize!
“Welcome Home” is a series of photographs about Iraq war veteran Brian Scott Ostrom, who suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, by Pulitzer Prize-winning “Denver Post” photographer Craig Walker. Walker has just been named Newspaper Photographer of the Year in the Missouri School of Journalism’s Pictures of the Year International Competition for the collection of photographs he took over 27 months about soldiers engaged in the Iraq war, which included the stunning images documenting the struggles of PTSD sufferer Brian Ostrom.
After serving four years as a reconnaissance man and having deployed twice to Iraq, Ostrom, who is now 27, returned home to the U.S. with a severe case of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Since his discharge, Ostrom has struggled with the demands of daily life, from finding and keeping employment to maintaining healthy relationships. But most of all, he’s struggled to overcome his brutal and haunting memories of Iraq and his guilt for things he did and didn’t do, while fighting a war in which he no longer believes.

Maya Angelou shilling for Obama and playing the race card during Black History Month
***
This year, if it progresses as Angelou expects, will exacerbate the pattern, bringing a momentous high, but not before some sickening lows. Don't worry about Barack Obama, says the chronicler of black history. He'll be re-elected. He deserves to be re-elected. But between now and November, it's going to get nasty.
"I think we are going to see a number of people who say: 'I have no racial prejudice in my heart, not in my conversation,'" Angelou says. "But in the next few months, as we wind up to the double campaign, I tell you we are going to see some nastiness, some vulgarity, I think. THEY'LL PULL THE SHEETS OFF." (?)
Obama has critics and doubters. Angelou, the sage of black America, now 83, has no time for them. "I think he has done a remarkable job, knowing how much he has been opposed," she says. "Every suggestion he makes, the Republicans en masse fight against him or don't vote at all." It's about him being a Democrat and being the first black president, she says.
More recently, her presidential link has been via the first lady, Michelle Obama. "She's the grand dame," says Angelou. "I wrote her a note a few months ago because I was in a gathering. The president and his party were there, but I had to leave early. I know that's a gaffe because no one leaves the building before the president so I wrote and apologised. I got a letter from her in her own handwriting. She said: 'I have only one regret – that I didn't come over and hug your neck.'"
When next they met, Angelou's shock was palpable. Millions of viewers of the US channel Black Entertainment Television (BET) saw the author – recipient of three Grammys, a Pulitzer nomination and 30 honorary degrees – prepare to receive more yet recognition; a BET Honors award. She had no idea who would present it. Enter the first lady. "She talked for about 10 minutes about my work and its impact on her and her husband for the past 20 years," she says. "Calm now, but not then, Angelou told reporters: "I thought my heart would burst."Maya Angelou shilling for Obama and playing the race card during Black History Month... more

Fox’s “Glee” dedicated Tuesday’s Valentine’s Day episode to the late Whitney Houston when, through a strange twist of fate, the hour featured a cover of one of the late pop icon’s most memorable hits in “I Will Always Love You.” Originally written and performed by Dolly Parton, with Houston singing the track for 1992′s feature film “The Bodyguard,” “Glee’s” Amber Riley covered the song in an already emotional scene where her character chose to be single rather than choose between her current boyfriend Shane and her ex, Sam.
The producers of Glee opted to update the episode, which had been delivered to the network last Friday, the day before Houston’s death, and featured a dedication to the singer-actress in a title card that came at the end of the episode. The card read, “Whitney Houston 1963-2012. We will always love you.” Houston died on Saturday at the age of 48.

Drug warriors often contend that drug use would skyrocket if we were to legalize or decriminalize drugs in the United States. Fortunately, we have a real-world example of the actual effects of ending the violent, expensive War on Drugs and replacing it with a system of treatment for problem users and addicts.
Ten years ago, Portugal decriminalized all drugs. One decade after this unprecedented experiment, drug abuse is down by half:
Health experts in Portugal said Friday that Portugal’s decision 10 years ago to decriminalise drug use and treat addicts rather than punishing them is an experiment that has worked.
"There is no doubt that the phenomenon of addiction is in decline in Portugal," said Joao Goulao, President of the Institute of Drugs and Drugs Addiction, a press conference to mark the 10th anniversary of the law.
The number of addicts considered "problematic" — those who repeatedly use "hard" drugs and intravenous users — had fallen by half since the early 1990s, when the figure was estimated at around 100,000 people, Goulao said.
Other factors had also played their part however, Goulao, a medical doctor added.
"This development can not only be attributed to decriminalisation but to a confluence of treatment and risk reduction policies."
Many of these innovative treatment procedures would not have emerged if addicts had continued to be arrested and locked up rather than treated by medical experts and psychologists. Currently 40,000 people in Portugal are being treated for drug abuse. This is a far cheaper, far more humane way to tackle the problem. Rather than locking up 100,000 criminals, the Portuguese are working to cure 40,000 patients and fine-tuning a whole new canon of drug treatment knowledge at the same time.
None of this is possible when waging a war.

Jennifer Hudson honored Whitney Houston’s life with an amazing tribute at the 2012 Grammy Awards. Hudson took the stage at last night’s 54th Annual Grammy Awards to sing an a cappella version of Whitney Houston’s hit “I Will Always Love You.” A lone spotlight beamed down on the Grammy and Academy Award winning American Idol alum after the artists and music industry executives who have passed away in the last year were paid their respects in a video montage. Thunderous applause rang through the audience before the room went dark and Hudson’s first clear, strong notes rang out.
She sang what could be considered Whitney Houston’s most famous hit, written by Dolly Parton for the soundtrack of “The Bodyguard.” Hudson’s rendition of the tune was above and beyond perfect, as if she was channeling the recently deceased singer herself. Her version was an exact replica of Houston’s own performance at the 34th Annual Grammy Awards twenty years ago. Throughout the song, Hudson appeared to be blinking back tears, and when she finished, she finally caved in to her overwhelming emotion. The audience went wild.

A recently published study by the Wildlife Conservation Society and others reveals that humpback whales on both sides of the southern Indian Ocean are singing different tunes, unusual since humpbacks in the same ocean basin usually all sing very similar songs. A recently published study by the Wildlife Conservation Society and others reveals that humpback whales on both sides of the southern Indian Ocean are singing different tunes, unusual since humpbacks in the same ocean basin usually all sing very similar songs.
The results of the study—conducted by researchers from WCS, Columbia University, and Australia —contradict previous humpback whale song comparisons. Generally, when song from populations in the same ocean basins are compared, researchers find that the songs contain similar parts or "themes." The differences in song between the Indian Ocean humpback populations most likely indicate a limited exchange between the two regions and may shed new light on how whale culture spreads.
The paper appears in the January edition of Marine Mammal Science and is available on the journal's website. The authors of the study include: Anita Murray, formerly of the Wildlife Conservation Society and Columbia University; Salvatore Cerchio, Yvette Razafindrakoto, and Howard Rosenbaum of the Wildlife Conservation Society; Robert McCauley of Curtin University, Perth, Australia; Curt S. Jenner of the Centre for Whale Research, Fremantle, Australia; Douglas Coughran of the Department of Environment and Conservation, Perth, Australia; and Shannon McKay of the School of Life and Environmental Science, Warrnambool, Australia.

The authors say that the differences most likely indicate limited exchange between whale populations in the waters off Madagascar (presented here in this sound file) and western Australia and may shed new light on how whale culture spreads. Credit: Anita Murray
"In the Northern Hemisphere, within an ocean basin whales sing songs that are composed of the same themes. However, whales in the southern Indian Ocean are singing almost completely different songs. Songs from Madagascar and Western Australia only shared one similar theme, the rest of the themes were completely different," said lead author Anita Murray, who conducted the research while a graduate student at Columbia University and the Wildlife Conservation Society and is currently pursuing her doctorate at the University of Queensland in Australia. "The reason for this anomaly remains a mystery. It could be the influence of singing whales from other ocean basins, such as the South Pacific or Atlantic, indicating an exchange of individuals between oceans which is unique to the Southern Hemisphere."
The songs of humpback whales are generally sung by male individuals on a population's winter breeding grounds, migratory routes, and summer feeding grounds. The songs themselves are complex arrangements of parts or "themes," consisting of ascending and descending wails, moans, and shrieks that are repeated in cycles lasting up to 30 minutes. The transmission of songs between individuals from different populations is likely to occur on feeding grounds or during migration when whales from different populations mix. Or, transmission of song may occur when individual male "troubadours" travel to different breeding grounds between breeding seasons or possibly during the same breeding season.
The research team made recordings of humpback whale songs in two locations in coastal Madagascar and three locations along Western Australia during the 2006 breeding season. Research teams in both regions used hydrophones to record the songs of 19 individual whales. Overall, the authors captured more than 20 hours of whole and partial songs for visual and audio analysis. The comparison revealed few similarities between songs; of the eleven themes recorded in both regions, only one theme was shared by both populations.
Due to the limited duration of the study (only one breeding season), researchers point out that continued analysis of songs in Madagascar and Australia are needed to examine the reasons for the limited similarity in repertoire.
Dr. Howard Rosenbaum, Director of WCS's Ocean Giants Program said: "These song comparisons complement our findings based on other methods, such as those from genetic analysis, to understand how whale populations interact with one another."
WCS conservationist Salvatore Cerchio added: "We have glimpsed here a snapshot of differences in repertoire between humpback whale populations of the Indian Ocean during a single season. Continued monitoring of these songs can provide us with valuable information on how whale songs are exchanged and how those channels of cultural transmission can be protected in the future."
