Jumping from elevated subways cars, police beat downs, exploding cars, gangsters, and wild dogs, are just a few of the obstacles graffiti artists face while creating their work. From the Beaches of LA to the crowded streets of Taipei City, graffiti writers have been adorning public space for over thirty years. Their stories of youthful camaraderie, adventure, betrayal, tragedy and glory have remained unheard beyond the elusive subculture of graffiti writers until now.
Graffiti Underworld is an illustrated collection of action packed tales straight from the mouths of some of the most notorious graffiti artists of the past 40 years. Compiled from interviews with over 100 hardcore graffiti writers, this collection of images and stories creates a never before seen vision of the subculture behind the graffiti art movement.
The Graffiti Underworld Book is due out this fall on Feral House.

In Berlin they are cooler than anywhere else in the world so it should come as no surprise that they are also cool with IEPE & the anonymous crew dumping 500 liters of waterbased environmentally-friendly paint on a busy intersection in the capital and watch as 2,000 cars proceed to “paint reality.”

On June 20th, 2010, world-renowned Chinese contemporary artist Liu Bolin camouflaged himself into a popular Kenny Scharf mural for his first live painting/ performance piece in the United States.
The performance was conceived by the New York based curatorial group Wooster Collective and Eli Klein Fine Arts with support by Goldman Properties, the owner of the property and longtime supporters of public art throughout SoHo.

"In the East Village middle school kids have been making bird houses as part of their school projects. The neighbors started complaining when they discovered rats were getting into the birds house to eat the food. I say to hell with the birds, this is New York City. Have a little respect for the rats."

Inspired by a recent mural in downtown Ottawa by Shepard Fairey (Obey), I've been making my own stickers and putting them up across the city. As always the Internet provided a wealth of info on the subject, everything from making stickers out of regular printer paper and homemade glue to using shipping labels and shelf liner paper.
I chose the latter method, starting out by constructing the image in photoshop, then tracing off of my monitor directly onto white shelf liner, colouring it in with permanent marker, and finally spraying it with several layers of glossy clear coat spray paint. (after the first couple were made and put up I found the clear coat necessary to give it a bit of protection from the elements and prevent the ink from fading.) The shelf liner paper sticks really well to any metal surface that I've tested so far as long as the surface is clean, and the longer it is allowed to set the harder it will be to peel off. For application I just carry a dish cloth and ruler, wiping the surface with the cloth and using the ruler to flatten the sticker as I peel it from one side to the other.
I've started a tumblr to share the finished products. Nothing serious, just something fun to do for the passed month or two while I await the day I move and can start working on music more seriously again.
The tumblr can be found here, follow me:
http://hvyhnds.tumblr.com/
If you've never been to http://www.instructables.com/ I suggest checking that out as well, all kinds of good DIY stuff can be found there.
Making your own stickers is fun and fairly inexpensive, however I have found that I am limited by the size of my monitor, I think the next step to start making stickers on a larger scale is to fool around with tracing from an old overhead projector.
Have fun, don't get busted and feel free to share your work either here or on tumblr.Inspired by a recent mural in downtown Ottawa by Shepard Fairey (Obey), I've been... more
