"An Assistant Professor in the Department of Telecommunications at the University of Indiana has substituted experience points for grades in two of his classes.
While it helps that the classes in question are game design courses, instructor Lee Sheldon thinks the grading scheme would perform just as well in other curriculum, or even in real-life jobs. Sheldon told IT News that, “…we are teaching the gamer, social networking generation,” adding, “I have no doubt the students will respond positively to any number of non-game-related classes taught in a similar manner.”
The benefits of such a tactic make learning (or working) more fun. Sheldon said that students in his two classes demonstrated “far great enthusiasm” than past classes that used a traditional grading method.
Sheldon, a gamer, game designer and television writer and producer, suggested that additional game design tactics could be adapted to the workplace, such as clearly defining a worker’s goals, providing incremental rewards and balancing effort and reward."

I'm a PhD researcher in Computer Science, and I research game technology at the Expressive Intelligence Studio (http://eis.ucsc.edu/). I get to experience games from the science to the consumption, and there is a lot that most people don't get to see. No event captures the communities behind the products better than the annual Game Developers Conference (http://www.gdconf.com).
People from all different vocations from all over the world at all different points in their career gather for one week to discuss innovations and future directions of video games. There is so much collaboration and sharing of creative and expressive endeavors through interactive media, and at GDC, you get to meet people from all the big companies as well as the independent developers. It's a diverse and friendly community of creative thinkers, artists, musicians, programmers, designers, and so much more.
This video follows the story of the game developer community and shows the faces behind the products. These faces are diverse in gender, race, nationality, profession, and age, all advancing the forefront of video games. Hopefully, seeing games as more than just consumable products helps to show the amazing process that goes into creating them.
I've dedicated my career towards researching and developing technology on the expressive potential of interactive media. For more information about the significance, future directions, and the inevitably magnificent technology of video games see my blog post: http://www.delawarereclaim.com/2010/02/24/video-games-rated-m-for-mature/I'm a PhD researcher in Computer Science, and I research game technology at the... more

If you are or ever have been the board gaming type, you may have run across Settlers of Catan, or at least heard of it from a fanatic friend. The game, which is a bit like Risk but without the war (at least in its basic incarnation), is all about resource gathering, trading, and colonization.
If you’ve played Settlers the board game, or if you’ve played it on your PC or Xbox 360, then you’ll already be familiar with the gameplay in the iPhone version, since it uses the standard rule set. Expansions are available for the board game which add more tiles or new gameplay elements, but for now, Catan on the iPhone doesn’t offer any of these additional modes of play.If you are or ever have been the board gaming type, you may have run across Settlers... more

While the makers of Rock Band are busy with the upcoming release of their Beatles version the rumour mill has kicked in about the next version - Rock Band 3.
With Guitar Hero 5 ready to hit the shelves in the coming monthes, Harmonix are going to need some new tech to kep gamers excited:
"One upcoming console technology has grabbed its attention in particular: “We will keep moving into new areas and look at new technologies that our platform holder partners are also developing, such as Project Natal from Microsoft,“ said MTV Games boss Scott Guthrie.
Guthrie didn’t go into detail about what Project Natal might do for Rock Band 3 – playing along with imaginary instruments would seem a bit farfetched, but it’s possible that the 3D camera tech could be used to put your movements into the game, allowing you to rock out in front of your crowd of virtual spectators."
Could be an interesting idea, just hope they get it right and it could be epicWhile the makers of Rock Band are busy with the upcoming release of their Beatles... more
