Anthony Le, 25, has been a fan of Iron Man since he was a kid, but when he heard that the comic-book superhero was hitting the big screen in 2008, he was inspired to build his own Iron Man suit. That version was more of a costume, but his new one, finished just in time for the movie’s sequel, edges much closer to the real thing. With its dent-proof exterior, motorized faceplate and spinning mock Gatling gun, his take on the movie’s War Machine suit could easily frighten a supervillain.
Le, a fitness consultant, studied some concept sketches of the suit posted on the Internet. He used thin, high-impact urethane for the armor, cutting it into plates and joining them with some 1,500 rivets and washers. He sculpted a clay helmet mold and then used a liquid resin mix to create the final product. But that was just cosmetic work. He also added a small servo motor that opens the faceplate, as in the movie, and built a gun out of pipes and a motor. LEDs in the eyes and chest-plate further add to the illusion.
Le plans to wear the suit to the movie and already has quite a following, especially at sci-fi conventions. “I’m kind of hard to miss,” he says.Anthony Le, 25, has been a fan of Iron Man since he was a kid, but when he heard that... more

When people make wishes, many ask for world peace. I, on the other hand, would wish for something far more realistic—that all conflicts be resolved with tiny cannons, like this one. Wars would be so adorable! When people make wishes, many ask for world peace. I, on the other hand, would wish... more

Maybe you knew enough about Spider-Man not to embarrass yourself. And yeah, most folks know the basics of Batman. And seriously, even my grandma knows Superman well enough to carry on a decent conversation. But Iron Man? Even with the first movie under your belt, what with the fog of any origin story, you still might be a little hazy on the specs of the Tony Stark mythoi.
And if you didn't know that Tony Stark is Iron Man's real name? Skip this article and save your money for the next Shrek. It's a little easier.
7. Iron Man was originally created as a response to the counter-culture 60s
Stan Lee says that he created Iron Man as sort of a challenge to himself -- if his readers were anti-war and anti-capitalist, then he'd turn a character who represented exactly that into someone they could root for. Sort of like a Howard Hughes character, only without the long hair, the untrimmed nails, and the mason jars of urine everywhere.
6. Tony Stark is the fourth richest man in the world
That's according to this month's issue of Forbes magazine, mind you, where they list his net worth at $8.8 billion. A little less cash than Richie Rich, but a touch more than Jed Clampett: that's Stark. He can buy and sell you and your little dog and pony show--but he won't, because he's a good egg.
5. Whiplash is stupid in the comic books too
Don't feel like you're alone in thinking that the villainous Whiplash in the new movie is sort of goofy. He is. But seriously, when your Rogue's Gallery includes such losers as the Unicorn and Mr. Doll, you know you don't have much to choose from. Batman might have the Joker, Spidey has Green Goblin, and Iron Man just has ... rust.
4. Iron Man has an armor (or gadget) for every occasion
There are many, many armor styles from which Iron Man can choose--from the sleek Stealth model to the ultra-strong model dubbed the "Hulkbuster." And the armor has had a few questionable features, as well. Like the roller skates built into the boots ... what is this, Xanadu? A million lights are shining, Tony, and there you are. A shooting star. In fucking roller skates.
3. Tony Stark is a pimp
That's right--there's really no beating Tony Stark in the stud department in the Marvel Universe. He's slept with more female superheroes than anyone else (powered or not), and the notches on his bedpost in just one of his many homes worldwide would make Tiger look like Queen Elizabeth I. Seriously, if any man can boast that he took a date from the arms of Tony Stark? That's some serious bragging rights. Good for you, Pete. Good for you.
2. Tony Stark is also a Friend of Bill W.
Or is a member of the twelve-step Marvel equivalent, anyway. As a recovering alcoholic, Iron Man's biggest battle has been with the bottle. And he's not always been successful at it--if you made a list of Iron Man's worst moments? They'd have nothing to do with super-villains, and a lot to do with Macallan Fine and Rare 1926.
1. Iron Man's greatest weakness isn't his heart
Sure, his chestpiece (at least for most of his career) may have been the thing keeping Stark's heart pumping, but his Achilles Heel has always been his ego. Never before was this more apparent than in the Marvel series "Civil War," in which Tony helped establish and enforce the Superhuman Registration Act. His counterpart, on the Anti-Registration side, was none other than Captain America. And really, if Captain America says you're behaving un-American, you might want to check yourself. Way to turn into Doctor Doom, Iron Man.Maybe you knew enough about Spider-Man not to embarrass yourself. And yeah, most folks... more

You'll recall, studious little gremlins that you are, that we recently saw the venerable first-gen iPhone prancing about with an unusual little green droid providing it with operational commands. Well, the coder behind that project, David Wang, has now stepped his game up to the iPhone 3G, which has been outfitted with an almost complete implementation of Android. Audio support is the last missing piece of the puzzle, but the groundwork has been laid and it too should be ready for some unholy Apple plus Google action within the next few days. Downloadable binaries are currently being prepared, so we thought we'd help you fill the time with a video demo of the port. You'll recall, studious little gremlins that you are, that we recently saw the... more

Some guy decided to interpret International Free Comic Day as Steal Anything You Want From A Comic Book Store Day. Thankfully Spiderman, some Jedi Knights, Flash, and other costumed crime fighters set him straight.
Basically a fellow in Australia tried to walk out with a $160 X-Men comic book without paying while 40 or so superheroes surrounded him. Most of the folks were under the impression that it was a staged event to fit the theme and didn't event realize that they were dealing with a real thief until Spiderman, the store owner, asked someone to call the police. Some guy decided to interpret International Free Comic Day as Steal Anything You Want... more

Lovely ladies of Iron Man 2 ,....#2: Olivia Munn
Gunaxin Girls
Ms. Olivia Munn, how we love you so. She’s been playing the sexy geek role for a number of years on Attack of the Show and has been dabbling in acting, but now she’s about to hit the big time with a role in Iron Man 2. It’s not a big role, and it isn’t disclosed just yet what she’ll be doing, but she IS in the movie.
Continuing our series of galleries (see Scarlett Johansson in part 1) focused on the actresses in the movie, our second gallery focuses on the delectable Olivia Munn.
There is some debate if Olivia Munn is seriously a geek or is just playing one, but one thing that isn’t debatable is that she is hot! Olivia isn’t afraid to show us her stuff, she’s done Cosplay at Comic-Con, been on the cover of Playboy and had pictorials in many men’s magazines. She has that vibe that make men want to hang with her as a bud, is a mega-fan of pie, does a mean truffle shuffle (see video below) and even dated Captain Freakin’ Kirk. Did we mention she’s super hot? Don’t believe us? See the exhibits below for proof.

The project remakes the entire film using 15-second clips made by a number of fans, in varies in style, format, people and puppetry. The video is just a clip of what must have been an immense editing and video logging project.

We know LEGO is a very versatile medium to build with but this is beyond what we considered possible. Seven speeds and a reverse gear were built into the gearbox for this LEGO vehicle. It’s not completely an original design, but adds to the five-speed design found in a ten-year-old LEGO set. See it demonstrated in the video after the break. The design uses a sequential gearbox; shifting is accomplished by clicking the stick up or down depending on how you want to shift. If you’ve got enough parts on hand you can build this using the assembly photosWe know LEGO is a very versatile medium to build with but this is beyond what we... more

I often find it challenging to categorize the Tech group, especially within the Current community (one of the most diverse I've ever managed). "Tech" means different things to different people, right? It could be web content, or social network news, or some new advancement in in solar energy, stem-cell research, an electric engine...the list goes on. I do my best to weigh each story that comes through the Tech group for relevance and quality. Sometimes the quality's spot-on but ultimately the content just fits better in the Green group, or the Science group, etc, so groups and tags get shifted around. It's a case-by-case thing because "technology" is pretty much everywhere now... everyone's gotta have the tech angle. It's my job to make sure that given the wide umbrella, when you come to the Tech group you have a pretty good idea of what you're getting.
That said, I tend to skew "geek culture" when I define tech, probably from my many years spent working in tech and surrounding myself with like-minded people. That's why I'm loving Current's new group "Geek Out Culture"! It's a great place to celebrate the fun side of being a geek. Like, for example, with a Crocheted Raccoon Mario Rug! Nothing technical about a rug, but the content's still a slam dunk with geeks. We appreciate the effort of it all. Or something. I'm thrilled to have a group that welcomes geeky content with open arms, even if that content isn't always perfect for the Tech group. Hooray!
Where do you fall under the "technology" umbrella? What does it mean to you? What do you want to see represented more in the Tech group?
Humbly yours,
SarahI often find it challenging to categorize the Tech group, especially within the... more

Comics nerds love two things; complaining about comics, and buying useless c*@p. And since comics don’t really make money any more, they’re kind of stuck selling comics nerds the useless cr@p. And boy, do they ever! Here are ten obscure characters, somehow immortalized in resin.
