Imagine the near future: Money is obsolete. All needs and wants are free for the taking. Society is reshaped in a manner that eliminates greed, corruption, waste, and most crime. Now imagine that we could start designing and building that future today.
That is exactly what Jacque Fresco has been planning for quite some time. In all my 55 years, I can't believe I just recently heard about Jacque and the Venus Project.

* The site contains 100 buildings, forming a ’temple precinct’
* Stonehenge may not have been the centre of Neolithic culture after all
* It could take decades to fully explore and examine
A 5000-year-old temple in Orkney could be more important than Stonehenge, according to archaeologists.
The site, known as the Ness of Brodgar, was investigated by BBC2 documentary A History of Ancient Britain, with presenter Neil Oliver describing it as ‘the discovery of a lifetime’.
So far the remains of 14 Stone Age buildings have been excavated, but thermal geophysics technology has revealed that there are 100 altogether, forming a kind of temple precinct.
Until now Stonehenge was considered to have been the centre of Neolithic culture, but that title may now go to the Orkney site, which contains Britain’s earliest known wall paintings.
Oliver said: ‘The excavation of a vast network of buildings on Orkney is allowing us to recreate an entire Stone Age world.
‘It’s opening a window onto the mysteries of Neolithic religion.’...

Video: Watch Flying Robots Build a 6-Meter Tower
POSTED BY: Erico Guizzo / Fri, December 02, 2011
This is the Flight Assembled Architecture, an installation that opened yesterday near Paris and is still going up as I write this. It's the result of a collaboration between ETH Zurich roboticist Raffaello D'Andrea and architects Fabio Gramazio and Matthias Kohler, also from ETH.
D'Andrea, an IEEE Fellow and IEEE Spectrum editorial board member, is known for his amazing robotic sculptures and flying robot stunts, and Gramazio and Kohler, who run their own design studio, are pioneers in bringing together robotics and architecture. But for an installation at the FRAC Centre, in Orléans, near Paris, they wanted to do something entirely new and bold.
How about using a fleet of quadcopters to build a 6 meter (20 feet) twisting tower out of 1500 foam bricks? Sure!
D'Andrea tells me they're using four flying robots at the same time. First, the robots grab foam bricks from a special brick dispenser on the ground. Next the quadcopters receive the exact coordinates of where the bricks should go based on a detailed digital blueprint of the tower. Then they fly off.
The robots fly autonomously, but they get help from the environment: The ceiling of the room where the assembly is taking place was equipped with a motion-capture system. A computer uses the vision data to keep track of the quadcopters and tell them where to go -- the same approach used at ETH's Flying Machine Arena. (More technical details here.)
When a robot's battery runs low, it automatically lands on a charger and a new quadrotor takes its place. The assembly is happening at a pace of 100 bricks per hour on average, D'Andrea says. Glue on the bottom of the bricks keeps them in place (the installation will become part of FRAC's permanent collection).
The foam tower is actually a 1:100 model of a "vertical village" conceived by Gramazio and Kohler. It would have a height of 600 meters and living space for 30,000 people, with each "brick" housing up to three floors of apartments as well as stores, cinemas, and gyms. A system of express and local elevators would allow efficient transportation, and traversing the entire building would take just 7 minutes. If you don't like the idea of having 29,999 other people living less than 7 minutes away, you may take some comfort in the fact that the village would be everything but densely packed: Looking out your window to the interior of the tower, the other side would be more than 300 meters away, and while shielding wind, the porous structure would allow for plenty of sunlight from all directions.
This week, after some test runs in Zurich, D'Andrea, Gramazio, and Kohler gathered their teams, packed their robots and bricks, and started the setup at the FRAC space. Last night, the museum opened its doors, and a crowd filled the room, letting off "lots of oohs and ahhs," reports Markus Waibel, a member of the D'Andrea team.

From Ground Zero to Reflection of Absence
Standing in the kitchen, driving in the car, receiving a phone call at the bus stop, walking into work or school, everyone knows where they were 10 years ago today.
The images of smoke, flames, dust, and chaos are burned into the memory of every American and most of the world. That fateful day of tragic loss, disbelief, gripping fear, and sorrow truly changed the world. Americans realized tomorrow is never promised and that every day is a blessing.

The National September 11 Memorial is a tribute of remembrance and honor to the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center site, near Shanksville, Pa., and at the Pentagon, as well as the six people killed in the World Trade Center bombing in February 1993. The Memorial’s twin reflecting pools sit within the footprints where the Twin Towers once stood. The names of every person who died in the 2001 and 1993 attacks are inscribed into bronze panels edging the Memorial pools, a powerful reminder of the largest loss of life resulting from a foreign attack on American soil and the greatest single loss of rescue personnel in American history.
This piece includes colorful illustrations and an animated short film depicting The National September 11 Memorial.

Architects & Engineers: Solving the Mystery of WTC 7
This is AE911Truth's new 9/11 documentary on the mysterious destruction of World Trade Center Building #7 on 9/11/01. Join actor, Ed Asner, and architect, Richard Gage, AIA, as they narrate an unfolding story that decimates the official account ("collapse due to normal office fires") of this 47 story high-rise which was destroyed on the afternoon of 9/11 in record time: top to bottom in under 7 seconds - and at free-fall acceleration for a third of its fall.
This is AE911Truth's best shot at a professionally produced 15 minute informative and engaging WTC 7 documentary - designed for newcomers. It is free. Please spread far and wide.
The documentary includes several of the dozens of technical and building experts that were interviewed and that appear in our forthcoming full length documentary - 9/11: Explosive Evidence - Experts Speak Out. Altogether of course there are more than 1,500 Architects & Engineers that have signed the AE911Truth petition calling for a new investigation of the destruction of all 3 high-rises at the World Trade Center on 9/11.

IBMs announcement of the first working cognitive computing chips covered nicely by Dean Takahashi at Venturebeat is one of those potentially disruptive technologies, but don’t expect the next iPad to be powered by one. While nanotechnologies have given us the tools to at least partially understand how nature works, replicating it is a different matter. It is a very different architecture, and one where connections are far more important than raw speed. But every advance in materials science, nanotechnology, and neuroscience takes us a step closer to developing something that allows us to get off the treadmill of Moore’s Law. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/your-details/42997-ibms-cognitive-computing-chipsIBMs announcement of the first working cognitive computing chips covered nicely by... more

The 4th anniversary of Italian filmmaker Michelangelo Antonioni’s death was a few days ago on July 30th. If you have followed my posts, it may be clear by now that I am in love with Antonioni’s work, especially the “trilogy” of the early 60s (L’avventura, La Notte, L’eclisse). These black and white films were incredibly dark, isolated, rich and yet lost, just like the characters inhabiting them. There is a haunting kind of romanticism about all three.

Hundreds of unionized concrete workers walked off the job at the World Trade Center on Monday, setting up for a possible strike in the coming days.
The contract covering the workers expired on July 1. Since then, the concrete workers have been operating without a new contract.
Officials with the Cement and Concrete Workers District Council representing the concrete workers declined to comment. Officials with the Cement League, a contractors’ association that represents management, couldn’t be reached for comment Monday. However, a source familiar with the matter said the two parties are currently negotiating.
Without concrete workers, work cannot proceed on part of the World Trade Center’s transit hub, according to a person familiar with the matter. Other construction tradesmen continued work at the site on Monday, but a prolonged work stoppage could affect their work if they need concrete to proceed, according to that same person.
Concrete workers also stopped working at Tower 1, but other construction there will be able to continue for about a week or so, according to another person familiar with the matter.
Monday’s work stoppage by the concrete workers union will have “no impact on construction of the 9/11 Memorial, which remains on track to open on the tenth anniversary [of the attacks], and minimal impacts on the site’s other projects,” said Steve Coleman, a spokesman with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

What can you make with 65 old, used shipping containers? How about a huge building with an amphitheater, offices and a sustainable development educational center.
The complex of 65 shipping containers is the creation of the Los Angeles-based architectural firm APHIDoIDEA. Acronymically and rather clumsily named the eCORRE (Environmental Center of Regenerative Research Education), the building would primarily serve as an environmental education center for Long Beach, California. The complex includes a public plaza underneath raised and angled shipping containers in the middle of the structure.

Earlier this year we explained what seismic isolators are, and now a Japanese architect has put them center stage in a new Osaka prefecture home. The mechanisms, which decouple the house from the ground movements happening during an earthquake, are usually buried underneath the ground level. Not so in the Television House, which is raised up on the usually hidden isolation units, making them clearly visible from the street.
Designed by Noriyosha Morimura Architects, the house is located in the Suita, Osaka, amid subdivisions of eclectically-designed single family homes. The tall, blank walls of a concrete plinth, which supports the elevated home, emphatically delineate the separation between residence and neighbor. Set atop this concrete podium are the seismic isolators—which in turn act as the foundation of the hovering living spaces—while various rooms are buried within the concrete mass below. Write the architects, “The property sits about 1.5m above the overall street level. The base of the seismic isolators are buried at street level, and then covered up to a height of about 1.5 m. The top of the seismic isolator becomes the foundation of the 1st floor of the home. The underground/parking is surrounded by the isolators and at street level, following the Building Standards Act.”
The Television House sits over a sunken driveway, emphasizing the isolation units. The domestic spaces “float” over the foundation and the driveway, safe from the perils of lateral ground forces.
The Television House may take its name from its formal similarity to a television unit, but the project is much more than the (admittedly, tired) exercise of critiquing suburbia through the framing and choreographing of domestic life. Rather, the house—an exemplary configuration of concrete elements—is concerned with the sustainability of life under volatile, temperamental natural conditions: specifically, how to live and build in anticipation of earthquakes and other natural disasters.
