Extracting tar sands is tantamount to a junkie looking for a vein in their toes to stick to get their fix when they have run out of veins. It is a desperate attempt to cling to the addiction of oil while touting it as sustainable when it is not. And it is not only unsustainable to this planet in the amount of water its process uses, it does not produce less in GHGS and is destroying one of the most pristine places on this planet at the cost of human health and other species. The Boreal Forest is being stripped, and water from the Athabasca River is being diverted to the detriment of fish and humans. Just how far will we allow this to go to satisfy our addiction to oil? How much more can this Earth take?Extracting tar sands is tantamount to a junkie looking for a vein in their toes to... more

The seven-year-old bird was rushed to an RSPCA animal centre after being found with a crossbow bolt through its neck at a park in Liverpool.
While treating him, vets also found pellets from different guns under his skin and evidence of other attacks
Swan Facts:
Swans are large water birds of the same family which also includes geese and ducks.
Swans usually mate for life, though "divorce" does sometimes occur, particularly following nesting failure.
Young swans are known as cygnets.
An adult male is a cob
An adult female is a pen (origin unknown).
The term 'swan song' comes from the ancient Greek belief that a swan sang a song of death when its life was about to end.
Swans have far more neck vertebrae than mammals, with 24 or 25 vertebrae; most mammals only have seven.
Swans in general have the largest eggs of any flighted bird.
Swans are known to have a triumph ceremony. Such ceremonies are when a male attacks a rival suitor, then returns to his potential mate to perform an elaborate ceremony while posturing and calling
1- Males are larger than females;
2- The knob at the base of the male's upper bill is larger than the female's knob. By the way, its this knob that distinguishes the mute swan from all others;
3- The neck of a male is thicker than the neck of a female.
A swan has some 25,000 feathers
A group of cygnets or eggs is called a "clutch"
A group of swans in the wild is called a herd while those in captivity are called a fleet
The Mute Swan is recognized as a symbol of grace in myth and legend and was the species Tchaikovsky chose to immortalize in the ballet Swan Lake.

Elvis the macaw went from prison gig to life of stardom
In the 1960s, Elvis was one of several parrots and other animals brought into an all-male prison in Chino, Calif., to see if the inmates' interaction with animals for several months before their release would improve their social skills and reduce recidivism.
Along the way, the 48-year-old female parrot, Elvis' "jail bird", appeared on the "Tonight Show" in the 1970s and had a speaking role in a national television commercial.
Here are some facts:
There are 17 species of macaws, and several are endangered including Hyacinth, red-fronted, and blue-throated macaws and the glaucus macaw and Spix's macaw may already be extinct in the wild.
Illegal poaching and declining rain forest homes is to blame
They are the largest birds in the parrot family in length and wingspan
Parrots are zygodactyl, like woodpeckers, having 4 toes on each foot two front and two back.
Macaws are native to Mexico, Central and tropical South America. Most species are associated with forest, especially rainforest, but others prefer woodland or savanna-like habitats.
Their dry, scaly tongues have a bone inside them that makes them an effective tool for tapping into fruits.
Macaws also have gripping toes that they use to latch onto branches and to grab, hold, and examine items.
Macaws are social birds that often gather in flocks of 10 to 30 individuals.
Macaws vocalize to communicate within the flock, mark territory, and identify one another.
Some species also eat damp soil, which may help to neutralize chemicals in their fruity diet and ease their stomachs.
Macaws typically mate for life. They not only breed with, but also share food with their mates and enjoy mutual grooming..
The hyacinth macawthe largest of all parrotshas an enormous wingspan of more than 4 feet
Macaws are playful and inquisitive and are able to mimic human vocalizations very well.
Macaws are able to reach speeds of up to 35 miles per hour.
Most macaws start out with gray or black eyes when theyre young, which change to brown or yellow when they mature

Much of central Scotland was brought to a standstill after a lorry containing 3,000 chickens crashed on the A80, resulting in birds running loose.
Central Scotland Police appealed to motorists on the north bound carriageway not to slow down to watch the recovery operation and to refrain from taking photographs while driving.
A specialist team has been brought into catch the chickens.

Biologists are working on getting rid of the rats on Rat Island in Alaska. The pesky rodents first arrived on the Aleutian island via a shipwreck in 1780 and have since taken over, making the island essentially uninhabitable to native birds and other wild life. Apparently rats don't even eat the whole bird, and the photo is proof - they eat the brains and eyeballs, and leave dead birds lying all over the place. Disgusting.Biologists are working on getting rid of the rats on Rat Island in Alaska. The pesky... more
