Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum on Sunday suggested that Susan G. Komen for the Cure shouldn’t provide grants to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screenings because abortions cause breast cancer, a false claim that has been repeatedly debunked.
The candidate told Fox News host Chris Wallace that he didn’t agree with the Komen Foundation reversing itself last week and making Planned Parenthood eligible for future grants.
“I’ve taken the position as a presidential candidate and someone in Congress that Planned Parenthood funds and does abortions,” Santorum explained. “They’re a private organization they stand up and support what ever they want.”
“I don’t believe that breast cancer research is advanced by funding an organization where you’ve seen ties to cancer and abortion,” he added. “So, I don’t think it’s a particularly healthy way of contributing money to further cause of breast cancer, but that’s for a private organization like Susan B. Komen to make that decision.”
According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the several small flawed studies that suggested a link between abortion and breast cancer have been disproven.
“Since then, better-designed studies have been conducted,” the institute’s website said. “These newer studies examined large numbers of women, collected data before breast cancer was found, and gathered medical history information from medical records rather than simply from self-reports, thereby generating more reliable findings. The newer studies consistently showed no association between induced and spontaneous abortions and breast cancer risk.”
In 2002, the Bush administration temporarily altered NCI’s website to say that scientific evidence supported a possible link between abortion and breast cancer. After an outcry from the scientific community, NCI corrected its website with an accurate fact sheet.
A study released by Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) in 2006 found that the Bush administration also used pregnancy resource centers — commonly known as “crisis pregnancy centers” — to falsely inform pregnant teens that the risk of breast cancer increased by 80 percent after an abortion.
“This tactic may be effective in frightening pregnant teenagers and women and discouraging abortion,” the study concluded (PDF). “But it denies the teenagers and women vital health information, prevents them from making an informed decision, and is not an accepted public health practice.”

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin says that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney won the Florida by paying for ads with a “false narrative.”
“I think that with $17 million purchasing some ads and some false narrative it was very, very difficult for Newt Gingrich and the other candidates to counter that bombardment of advertisements,” the former Republican vice presidential candidate told Fox News host Megyn Kelly.
“$17 million spent in one state, that purchased a lot of darts and arrows that were flown in one direction and then a lot of darts and arrows were flown back and you know a lot of that negativity sure didn’t paint the party and the cause in very attractive colors,” she added. “I think that hurts the electorate and ultimately diminishes the energy necessary to move forward in the general election.”
Palin has previously said that she would have voted for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in both South Carolina and Florida — and Tuesday night’s results didn’t change her mind going forward.
“As it stands obviously it’s Romney and Newt are closest to be the front-running candidate, and so I would continue to vote for whoever it is to allow the process, and at this point it looks like it still is Newt,” she explained. “You have to kind of continue to level the playing field with your vote.”

Colorado state Rep. Laura Bradford (R) was pulled over last week in Denver on the suspicion that she was driving under the influence. During the stop, she admitted to drinking and failed a field sobriety test, but cops claim they were unable to arrest her. Under an obscure state law, elected officials making their way between “legislative events” have immunity from prosecution.
Bradford told police when she was pulled over at 10:00 pm that she was leaving a legislative event and had to be back at the state capital in the morning, which was enough to trigger the law — a law of which Bradford now claims to have been unaware. Denver police, however, say that Bradford refused to waive her immunity under the law when asked, since it would have resulted in her being taken into custody for a breath or blood test.
She’s been suspended from her committee chair position and the House Speaker is looking into other punishments. Meanwhile, Senate Democrats are calling for the law to be amended.

Press conferences are no easy ride, even for puppets – as this footage of Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy shows.
The pair are on the promotional circuit for their new film The Muppets and were asked for a response to allegations from Fox News that the project is ‘pushing a dangerous liberal agenda.’
“They were concerned about us having some prejudice against oil companies and I can tell you that’s categorically not true,” says Kermit in defence of the movie, “And besides, if we had a problem with oil companies, why would we have spent the entire film driving around in a gas-guzzling Rolls Royce.”
Kermit’s co-star, Miss Piggy, joins in the attack on Fox News, saying “It’s almost as laughable as, er, accusing Fox News of, er, being, you know, news.”

Failed Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin all but endorsed Newt Gingrich on Saturday, saying Florida voters should “rage against the machine, vote for Newt.”
Fox News host Jeanine Pirro asked the former Alaska governor how Gingrich could claim that he was not a Washington insider after being in Congress for 20 years, including serving as the Speaker of the House.
“Look at the players in the establishment who are fighting so hard against him,” Palin explained. “They want to crucify him because he’s tapped into that average, everyday tea party grassroots movement that has said enough is enough of the establishment that tries to run the show and tweak rules and laws and regulations for for their own good, and not for our nation’s own good. Well, when both party machines — and many in the media — are trying to crucify Newt Gingrich for bucking the tide, and bucking the establishment, that tells you something.
She added: “And I say, you know, you got to rage against the machine at this point in order to defend our republic and save what is good and secure and prosperous about our nation. … So, if for no other reason, rage against the machine, vote for Newt. Annoy a liberal, vote Newt.”
Even though polls show otherwise, Palin insisted that Gingrich was also the candidate that had the best chance at beating President Barack Obama in the general election.
“I think that comes down to who can articulate their ideas, their solutions best,” she said. “And in a campaign, the way that you articulate that is in a debate. And I’ve appreciated, again, Newt Gingrich’s, his style in debates, his thinking, his way of explaining what it is that he stands for. So I think that in a debate, Newt Gingrich would clobber Barack Obama.”
Using violent rhetoric to describe how Gingrich would fair against Obama is nothing new for Fox News employees like Sarah Palin. Last week, Fox News host Steve Doocy claimed that Gingrich would “take off the head of the president” during a debate.

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on Tuesday warned that he might not participate in future debates if moderators didn’t allow his fans to cheer.
NBC News had asked the audience at Monday night’s debate in Florida to hold their applause until the commercial breaks — and Gingrich was perceived to have done significantly worse than in previous debates.
“I wish in retrospect that I had protested when [NBC moderator] Brian Williams took them out of it,” Gingrich told Fox News Tuesday. “I think it’s wrong. And I think he took them out of it because the media is terrified that the audience is going to side with the candidates against the media, which is what they’ve done in every debate.”
“We’re going to serve notice on future debates. We’re just not going to allow that to happen,” he added. “That’s wrong. The media doesn’t control free speech. People ought to be allowed to applaud if they want to.”
Gingrich’s performances at debates in South Carolina were thought to have contributed to his landslide victory over former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in that state’s primary.
A survey (PDF) released Monday by the Democratically-affiliated Public Policy Polling (PPP) firm showed Gingrich leading Romney, 38 percent to 33 percent. Gallup’s daily tracking poll on Tuesday indicated that the two GOP candidates were in a virtual tie nationally.
But it could be advisable for Gingrich to get used to debating without the comfort of audience reaction. In all three of the 2008 general election debates between then-Democratic nominee Barack Obama and then-Republican nominee John McCain, audiences were asked to refrain from making noise.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said on Sunday that he may block an extension of the payroll tax holiday if President Barack Obama does not approve the Keystone XL oil pipeline.
“We’re going to do everything we can to make sure that this Keystone pipeline is in fact approved,” the Speaker told Fox News host Chris Wallace.
“Are you saying you may link the Keystone pipeline to extending the payroll tax holiday?” Wallace asked.
“We may,” Boehner admitted. “As I say, all options are on the table.”
“Why not demand that if he wants the payroll tax cut, he has to approve it?” Wallace urged. “In other words, it comes with it. You want the payroll tax cut, the pipeline goes with it.”
“All options are on the table,” Boehner repeated.
Wallace also noted that during his upcoming annual State of the Union speech, Obama would ask for more help for the middle class, propose that the wealth pay more taxes and suggest a “grand bargain” to cut the deficit and raise the nation’s debt limit.
“It sounds to me like the same old policies that we’ve seen,” Boehner complained. “And if that’s what the president’s going to talk about Tuesday night, I think it’s pathetic.”
Last week, the Obama administration rejected TransCanada Corp.’s plan to pipe Canadian oil sands through sensitive environmental areas to Gulf Coast refineries. The 2 percentage point payroll tax cut for 160 million workers expires in February.

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee (R) is somehow still confused over the nationality and background of President Barack Obama.
Huckabee appeared on The O’Reilly Factor Friday evening to discuss the growing story of Mitt Romney unveiling his tax returns, saying the GOP candidate should do that based solely on one condition.
“Let him make this challenge,” he said. “I’ll release my tax returns when Barack Obama releases his college transcripts and the copy of his admission records to show whether he got any loans as a foreign student.”
Huckabee’s bizarre view of Obama stemmed from a 2009 email, based on an Associated Press April Fools joke, claiming Obama received a scholarship for foreign students while he attended Occidental College.
This isn’t the first time Huckabee has sorely lacked knowledge on Obama’s history. Last February, he wrongly claimed that Obama “grew up in Kenya.”

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on Wednesday said that he wouldn’t abide by Supreme Court rulings if they made the “wrong decision.”
Speaking to a forum of anti-abortion activists in South Carolina, the candidate suggested that he would ignore the landmark Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion, according to The Guardian.
“If the court makes a fundamentally wrong decision, the president can in fact ignore it,” Gingrich declared.
The former House Speaker said that the first ruling he would void would be Boumediene v. Bush, where the Supreme Court said that detainees imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay had the right to challenge their detention in court.
“I fully expect as president that there will be several occasions when we will collide,” Gingrich continued. “The first one, which is actually foreign policy, the Boumediene decision which extends American legal rights to enemy combatants on the battlefield is such an outrageous extension of the court in to the commander in chief’s role.”
“I will issue an instruction on the opening day, first day I’m sworn in, I will issue an executive order to the national security apparatus that it will not enforce Boumediene and it will regard it as null and void because it is an absurd extension of the supreme court in to the commander in chief’s (authority).”
During a debate on Fox News last month, Gingrich explained that he “could simply issue instructions to ignore it, and say it’s null and void and I do not accept it.”
Throughout his campaign, the Georgia Republican has made no secret of his disdain for the third branch of government.
He has threatened to arrest or abolish federal judges if he didn’t agree with their rulings.

Newsweek made this week waves once again, this time for the lead story titled, “Why are Obama’s critics so dumb?” Today, on Fox and Friends, host Gretchen Carlson asked her “fair and balanced” panel to discuss whether her outrage over the headline is justified. While most made the point that the headline is predominantly a sales-pitch, the “liberal” guest, TV talk show host Jerry Springer, opted to note the irony.
“It is a little disingenuous,” he said. “Here we are at Fox, complaining that Newsweek may be a little partisan.” Noting that magazines and other media outlets often take — or sell — opinions, Springer pointed out that Carlson’s outrage might be misplaced considering that “you guys, every single day, bash President Obama”:
SPRINGER: If the point of this discussion is to be upset with a magazine that — even if it took the position that they’re pro-Obama — again, everybody in the media is doing things like that. We’re here on Fox News. Every single day, in fairness, you guys, every single day, bash President Obama.
CARLSON: I’m going to take you to task on that because on this panel right here, we have a fair and balanced panel right here. And I’m the independent.
SPRINGER: But, what’s the rest of the show? The rest of the show, every single morning, you guys are slamming Obama. You know you are. I’m not saying you don’t have a right to. But every single conversation is something bad about Obama.
Carlson’s “independence” must be seconds old. After all, Fox and Friends has never missed an opportunity to blast Obama, be it over the Iraq War, recess appointments, terrorism, income inequality, Christmas, or for generally existing.
The fair and balanced Carlson herself has unloaded on Obama, claiming he is putting “politics ahead of jobs for the American People,” or that he is “grinching 15 cents out of your pocket,” or that he is “working overtime now to raise taxes.” She’s even offered advice to GOP candidates on exactly how to campaign against the president. But Carlson insisted to Springer, “you obviously don’t watch our show.” “Quite frankly, we present both sides of the story and leave it up to our viewers to decide where they fall,” she said.

Fox News host Bill O’Reilly on Monday said that he knew the difference between black musicians because he’s a “brother.”
During a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day segment criticizing a New York Times columnist for pointing out that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney would be more popular among racists than current President Barack Obama, conservative media critic Bernie Goldberg showed O’Reilly a picture of himself with a black rapper.
“Here’s a picture, Bill, of Ice-T, one the the iconic figures in black culture and music,” Goldberg said.
“That’s Ice Cube!” O’Reilly interrupted.
“No. No. No. No,” Goldberg disagreed. “That’s Ice-T.”
“No, it’s Ice Cube, Bernie,” O’Reilly pointed out. “That’s how white you are. You don’t know Ice-T from Ice Cube. That’s Ice Cube.”
“I’m a brother, man,” the culture warrior host added. “You can’t be doing that to me. I know the Cubes from the Ts.”
Goldberg shot back: “Until you spend a little time chilling with Ice Cube, or Ice-T for that matter, don’t be making racial references at me.”
Finally getting around to New York Times columnist Lee Siegel’s observation that racists would prefer Romney over Obama, Goldberg complained, “This is not political analysis, this is a nasty strain of shallow stupidity.”
“Isn’t a shame that we have to talk about this stuff on Martin Luther King’s birthday?” O’Reilly asked. “Isn’t it a shame that we have to be talking about that garbage on this day?”
Speaking of iced tea, O’Reilly said in 2007 that he “couldn’t get over the fact” that Sylvia’s Restaurant in Harlem was “exactly the same” as any other restaurant.
“There wasn’t one person in Sylvia’s who was screaming, ‘M.F.-er, I want more iced tea,’” the Fox News host later told then-National Public Radio correspondent Juan Williams.

Talk show host David Pakman questioned Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association on his program Monday over his opposition to non-heterosexual behavior and same sex relationships.
About halfway through the interview, Pakman asked why those opposed to same sex relationships seemed to focus on anal sex between gay men and ignore lesbian women.
“Many people on your side — I guess, if we are to call it a side — seem so fixated on the minutia of what two men do with each other, when they claim that they’re focus is really the broader morality of homosexuality,” Pakman said. “But you seem completely unconcerned with lesbians, which seems to be very common among anti-gay folk. Why is the obsession with gay male sex as opposed to lesbians? Do you care about lesbians at all?”
“Yeah, and that is one of the reasons why we oppose the normalization of lesbian behavior,” Fischer responded. “There are a number of serious mental and physical health consequences that are associated with lesbianism.”
“Like what?” Pakman interjected.
“They have a much higher rate of breast cancer for instance, they have a much higher rate of certain vaginal diseases, they have a much higher rate of emotional problems such as suicidal ideation, they is a much higher rate of domestic disturbance in lesbian relationships,” Fischer claimed. “So for their sake, we think society ought to oppose the normalization of lesbianism as well as homosexuality.”
The Southern Poverty Law Center classifies the American Family Association as a hate group because of its “demonizing propaganda aimed at homosexuals and other sexual minorities.”

Failed Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin on Wednesday urged current GOP frontrunner Mitt Romney to release his tax records and prove that he had created more than 100,000 jobs as the head of Bain Capital.
In an interview on Fox & Friends earlier this month, Romney said that he had “helped create over 100,000 new jobs” during his time as a business consultant.
Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom later told The Washington Post that those figures included all the jobs created by companies that Bain had helped to grow, not necessarily during the period Romney worked at Bain.
“His campaign offered no definitive proof that Bain added more jobs than it eliminated while Romney headed the firm,” the Post‘s Josh Hicks wrote in November.
In recent days, a super PAC supporting former House Speaker Newt Gingrich released a film attacking Romney’s record at Bain, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry has called the venture capital firm “vutures.”
“I think what Gov. Perry is getting at is that Gov. Romney has claimed to have created 100,000 jobs at Bain and people are wanting to know, is there proof of that claim?” Palin told Fox News host Sean Hannity Wednesday. “And was it U.S. jobs created for United States citizens?”
“Nobody should be surprised that things about Bain Capital and maybe tax returns not being released yet and maybe some records not being as transparently provided as voters deserve to see right now, don’t be surprised that that’s all coming out today because it would come out as an October surprise had the GOP candidates not brought those out today,” she added.
“It’s kind of like some come-to-Jesus moments for some of these candidates, and that’s healthy and that’s good.”
Speaking to reporters at Cherokee Trikes & More in Greer, South Carolina Thursday, Romney dismissed criticism over his lack of transparency.
“Staples, Bright Horizons Children’s Centers, the Sports Authority, Steel Dynamics — those four alone added well over 100,000 jobs,” he explained. “And then the press has also reported on businesses that have lost employment, and that was a few thousand jobs that were lost.”
“I think anytime a job is lost, it’s a tragedy,” the candidate admitted. “For the family, for the individual that loses the job, it’s just devastating. And every time we invested in a business, it was to try to encourage that business to have ongoing life. The idea of making a short-term profit doesn’t really exist in business.”
