Beginning in spring of this year, Sears began selling EcoGir business suits for men. The difference between these suits and others is that EcoGir is made from 100% recycled plastic bottle chips and wool, making it a very Green alternative. Sears is attempting to save energy while reducing carbon footprints and diverting waste from landfills. According to The Clean Air Council, 2.5 million plastic bottles are thrown away by Americans each hour, meaning nearly 60 million bottles are thrown away per day. It only takes 13 two-liter plastic bottles to fashion one full suit.Beginning in spring of this year, Sears began selling EcoGir business suits for men.... more

Endangered hammerhead sharks are often caught for their valuable fins
Many species of open ocean shark are under serious threat, according to an assessment by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The Red list gives the status of 64 types of shark and ray, over 30% of which are threatened with extinction.
The authors, IUCN's Shark Specialist Group, say a main cause is overfishing.
Listed as endangered are two species of hammerhead shark, often subject to "finning" - a practice of removing the fins and throwing away the body.
This is the first time that IUCN Red List criteria, considered the world's most comprehensive inventory of the conservation status of plants and animals, have been used to classify open ocean, or pelagic, sharks and rays.
The list is part of an ongoing international scientific project to monitor the animals.
The authors classified a further 24% of the examined species as Near Threatened.
Sharks are "profoundly vulnerable" to overfishing, they say. This is principally because many species take several years to mature and have relatively few young.
"[We have] documented serious overfishing of these species, in national and international waters. This demonstrates a clear need for immediate action on a global scale."
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization recognised the potential threat to sharks over a decade ago, when it launched its "International Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Sharks" in 1999.
But the "requested improvements fisheries data from member states... have been painfully slow and simply inadequate", according to this report by the IUCN.
Many pelagic sharks are caught in high seas tuna and swordfish fisheries.
Although some are accidentally caught in nets meant for these other fish, they are increasingly targeted for their meat, teeth and liver oil, and because of high demand, particularly in Asia, for their fins.Endangered hammerhead sharks are often caught for their valuable fins

Each year Ocean City in New Jersey has a french fry sculpting contest. Yes, really!
About 150 people - and a hell of a lot more potatoes - took part in it this year. Sadly this article doesn't feature any pictorial evidence of the masterpieces, but does offer some amusing conversational gems...
"Anybody can work in paint or clay," claims contestant Kevin Brown, "but it takes a real artist to work in potatoes."
Mr Brown was asked what Monday was, replying: "The day I beat my wife in a taffy-sculpting contest."
His wife, when asked the same question, replied, "Our 24th wedding anniversary."

This is the best news I've heard all week - a new study from a team at Harvard Medical School says snacking on peanuts or peanut butter at least five days a week can nearly halve the risk of a heart attack.
Their findings support earlier studies on the cardiovascular benefits of peanuts and peanut products. Researchers say peanuts and peanut butter could also be helping by reducing inflammation in the body, or boosting the health of blood vessels around the heart. This is the best news I've heard all week - a new study from a team at Harvard... more

Xeros is working on a new breed of washing machines that will use only a cup of water per load, relying on reusable nylon beads to trap dirt and stains for hundreds of washes.
The U.K.-based Xeros has been testing the machine for three years. Through a partnership with GreenEarth Cleaning, the machines will soon be sold in North America. The initial target will be commercial dry cleaners and laundromats.
The Xeros machine uses 90 percent less water than a conventional washing machine, and it also use less detergent and energy for a load of laundry. Due to less water being used, there’s also less of a need for putting clothes in a dryer, which also saves energy.
For those wondering about a difference in quality or effect on clothing, GreenEarth claims the impact is negligible.
“The testing completed to date has indicated no appreciable difference in wear between garments processed in the Xeros technology versus the traditional laundry process,” says Tim Maxwell, president of GreenEarth Cleaning. “Extensive testing with silks, embroidered garments, and other delicate items have shown no ill effects.”
Xeros claims that the nylon beads are recyclable once they are saturated, but the company has not announced any plans to offer recycling. Typically in the U.S., nylon can be recycled as a scrap plastic but is not part of curbside recycling programs.Xeros is working on a new breed of washing machines that will use only a cup of water... more

As advocates for gays and lesbians intensify their criticism of the White House, President Obama has invited some of their leaders to an East Room reception next Monday to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion, the 1969 Greenwich Village demonstrations that gave birth to the modern gay rights movement.
The White House has not publicized the reception, and officials did not respond to e-mail requests for comment. But gay leaders from here and around the country said they had received either telephone calls from the White House or written invitations to the event, and were told Mr. Obama is expected to speak.
Some said it would take more than a reception to change their view that Mr. Obama has not been aggressive enough in pursuing gay rights. As a candidate, Mr. Obama campaigned to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, the federal law barring gay marriage, and ‘’don’t ask don’t tell,’’ the military policy that bars gays and lesbians from serving openly. But advocates have accused him of dragging his feet.
“What’s going to change the way the community is feeling is seeing the introduction of a bill to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’’ said Jennifer Chrisler, executive director of the Family Equality Council, a Boston-based advocacy group, referring to two policies Mr. Obama pledged to overturn. She said gay rights advocates want to see “a president who is fulfilling the promises he made on the campaign trail.’’As advocates for gays and lesbians intensify their criticism of the White House,... more

A new study finds music can have a physical effect on heart rate and blood flow, opening the door for new treatments for heart disease and stroke.
The calming sound of the harp may be helping these patients in their recovery effort.
In a new study, Italian researchers measured the physical response 24 participants had to classical music.
They found every crescendo, or volume increase caused blood vessels to narrow, and an increase in blood pressure and heart rate.
However, when there was a pause in the music or the volume in the song decreased, blood vessels dilated, improving blood flow, and heart rate and blood pressure went down significantly.
Experts say more studies are needed, but they hope a combination of loud and soft music can help patients recovering from a stroke or heart disease.A new study finds music can have a physical effect on heart rate and blood flow,... more
