Smokey, a British house cat, has roared, or rather purred, her way into the Guinness Book of World Records. The New York Daily News reports that Smokey, a white tabby, can purr like a "lawnmower" at levels up to 73 decibels, 16 times louder than the average feline though a bit "softer" than blue whales, which are the loudest animals on earth with a low-frequency pulse of 188 decibels.
Sounds like this cat's purr is a lot bigger than, um, her paw?
The New York Daily News says that Smokey actually sounds more like a "cooing dove." As owner Ruth Adams writes on www.smokeythepurringcat.com, a website devoted to the "outspoken" feline:
Smokey is quite possibly the worlds loudest purring cat and is louder than a boeing 737 coming into land!
The only time purr-producing Smokey is quiet is when she is asleep. “She even manages to purr while she eats” comments owner Ruth.
It was back in February that Smokey first attracted notice after she won a local competition for "most powerful purr." A local community college submitted the results to Guinness and the rest is, yes, history. Smokey is now in the Guinness Book of World Records for having achieved the "loudest purr by a domestic cat at 67.7 dB (LA peak)."

Few things excite the blogosphere, or human beings for that matter, as much as the discovery of a new species. Especially a strikingly beautiful mammalian one. As such, the news of the Sunda Leopard's discovery -- the "world's newest cat", according to the BBC -- wasted no time in spreading like wildfire (the proverbial kind, of course, that would in no way endanger the new cat's habitat). It's not hard to see why:
It's gorgeous -- if also a little eerily extraterrestrial in this photo:
The BBC reports on its discovery, and the unusual fact that the cat has two distinct forms:
The "newest" cat species described to science, the Sunda clouded leopard, actually exists in two distinct forms, scientists have confirmed. This big cat is so enigmatic that researchers only realised it was a new species - distinct from clouded leopards living elsewhere in Asia - in 2007. The first footage of the cat in the wild to made public was only released last year.
Genetic analysis has confirmed that the cats living in Sumatra and Borneo are indeed different forms. So that makes two more additions to the clouded leopard family, which is generally considered to be the most elusive of all of the big cats. See here:

According to the article the cat got on the train at Wairarapa "but the cat had so far refused to reveal which one. The cat would also not discuss whether its journey to Wellington was for business or pleasure, but based on its reaction Mr Parry suggested it was an important engagement."-Time-age
The rail services also stated they would not charge the cat for a rail fare of $18, but are appealing to the owner to pick up the cat.
Though the probably want to return to cat after it attacked the driver and delayed the train for 30mins. The fat lady who threw a cat into a garbage bin has avoided being sent to the slammer herself. However, Mary Bale — the perp caught by the UK’s ubiquitous surveillance cameras — has been fined 265 pounds ($420) for animal cruelty (per Reuters). She could have received a sentence of up to six months in jail — should she have?
