San Francisco -- An alleged carjacking suspect led San Francisco police on a high speed chase over the closed San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge Friday night.
The chase began on Sterling St., in San Francisco at around 10:20 p.m. and crossed the lower deck of the span at speeds near 115 mph. After calling off the chase amid safety concerns, police found the Dodge Nitro on 79th and International Blvd., in Oakland.
The suspect was taken into custody a short time later. No construction workers were injured since most of the repair work is taking place on the upper deck of the 73-year-old structure.
The bridge has been closed since Tuesday, when a cable snapped sending 5,000 pounds of steel crashing to the deck below. The closure is expected to last through the weekend and the span may not be ready for Monday morning's commute, according to the California Department Of Transportation.
280,000 vehicles cross the thoroughfare every day. Most of these motorists have clogged onto other bridges and roadways. Others have taken ferrys and the region's Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) trains.
"I take the water taxi to work now," said Josh Esparza, a Coast Guard operations specialist who works on Yerba Buena Island and usually takes the Bay Bridge from Oakland. "It sure beats driving in traffic."
(10-27) 20:49 PDT San Francisco -- Three pieces of the Bay Bridge's cantilever section that underwent emergency repairs over Labor Day weekend snapped and crashed onto the upper deck of the span Tuesday afternoon, striking three vehicles and forcing the indefinite closure of the region's busiest bridge.
As many as three vehicles were damaged during Tuesday afternoon's commute when repair work done to fix a cracked eyebar spotted over Labor Day weekend came loose, bringing pieces of the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge raining down on cars below. According to the California Highway Patrol, both decks of the bridge -- which carry 200,000 vehicles a day in and out of the city of San Francisco -- will be closed for 24 hours. As many as three vehicles were damaged during Tuesday afternoon's commute when repair... more

BAGHDAD: A car bomb exploded at the entrance to a fruit and vegetable market in south Baghdad, killing at least 25 people and wounding about 40, police and hospital officials said, in the latest sign of rising attacks.
The blast, which occurred about 7 a.m. at the Rasheed market in the city's southern Dora area, follows a sharp increase in violence in Iraq last month, raising concern that militants have regrouped after suffering sharp setbacks in fighting over the last two years.
Hours later, another car bomb exploded in the capital's Karradah district, killing two people and wounding six, police said. The bomb apparently targeted a police patrol but missed.

By Lord Michael Chambers Rosenthorn Updated October 21, 2009 Eddie Murphy's (inset) home in home in Englewood, New Jersey. Once priced at $30 million, the comedian has cut that price in half in order to sell it in this troubled economy.
Funnyman Eddie Murphy won't be joking over this.
Nearly five years after his posh seven-bedroom Englewood, N.J., mansion went on the market for $30 million, the actor has slashed $15 million off the asking price.
And still no buyers.
The lavish gated estate, known as Bubble Hill, comes complete with a bowling alley, theater and recording studio.
It also has a full-size racquetball court, indoor pool, elevator and a carriage house with gym.
Annual taxes alone are $197,723.
"It's a beautiful house and 10 minutes from Manhattan," said real estate broker Dennis McCormack, of Prominent Properties Sotheby's International.
"The home was recently renovated and I listed it three weeks ago."
The grounds of the Brayton St. mansion span 5 acres, and the brick Colonial-style main house is 25,000 square feet.
When the 32-room house first hit the market in 2004 with a $30 million price tag it became the most expensive single-family home in the Garden State.
The "Beverly Hills Cop" and "Shrek" star is hoping for the more modest sum of $14,990,000.
"This is happening all the way around," said broker Frances Katzen, executive vice president at Prudential Douglas Elliman.
"The buyer pool for that price range has adjusted quite a bit."By Lord Michael Chambers Rosenthorn Updated October 21, 2009 Eddie Murphy's (inset)... more
Engineers at Oregon State University have made a major new advance in taking waste heat and using it to run a cooling system - a technology that can improve the energy efficiency of diesel engines, and perhaps some day will appear in automobiles, homes and industry.
This heat-actuated cooling system, which will probably find its first applications by the U.S. Army, could ultimately be applied to automobiles, factories or other places where waste heat is being generated, and used to provide either air conditioning or electricity.
In its first military application where stationary diesel generator sets are used, researchers say they expect improved efficiencies of 20-30 percent in situations where cooling is neededEngineers at Oregon State University have made a major new advance in taking waste... more

Copenhagen, Denmark (Sports Network) - Rio de Janeiro has been awarded the 2016 Summer Olympics in a stunning voting process that left Chicago as the first of the four finalist cities eliminated.
International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge made the announcement Friday in Copenhagen.
Rio de Janeiro, which becomes the first city in South America to host the Olympics, beat Madrid in the final vote among IOC members. Tokyo was the other finalist.
Despite the presence of President Barack Obama, who spoke during the United States' presentation earlier Friday, Chicago received the fewest votes in the first round of balloting, leaving Rio de Janeiro, Madrid and Tokyo alive in the process.
Tokyo then garnered the least support in the second round, setting up the final ballot between Rio de Janeiro and Madrid. In your face Chicago!

A Tsunami warning has been issued for many South Pacific nations following a magnitude 8.3 earthquake at 17.48 GMT at a depth of 33km (20 miles) some 190km from Samoa's capital Apia.
A Tsunami has already struck American Samoa in the last few hours and several are already reported dead. A senior hospital employee in the main hospital for American Samoa has spoken to the BBC in a live phone call and explained the seriousness of the situation. Homes have already been swept away and many are reported dead.
A Tsunami warning is in place for the Samoa islands, New Zealand, Tonga and Fiji, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.
"Based on all available data, a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicentre," the PTWC - a branch of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Mr Weinstein said Tuesday's quake was "much smaller" than that tsunami, and only had 3% of the energy generated by the 2004 quake that caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands.A Tsunami warning has been issued for many South Pacific nations following a magnitude... more
