Weezy F. Baby is having another baby. Lil Wayne announced Saturday night during the BET Hip-Hop Awards that he's having his first son in just a "couple of days." He was onstage accepting the Lyricist of the Year Award when he told the crowd at the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center of his impending bundle of joy.
Not even three quarters into the show, Wayne had already jumped on the stage with DJ Khaled and a community of friends to help his mouthy friend accept an award; joined Common, T-Pain and Busta Rhymes during N.E.R.D.'s "Spazz"; and won the People's Champ Award. Another Weezy highlight was his collision of skills with T-Pain and Ludacris during "Can't Believe It" and "Chopped & Screwed."
With all this commotion, you'd think Wayne would be relishing the spotlight. Nah. He told MTV News earlier in the day he'd rather be in the studio.
Next on his plate is the release of a new album, Tha Carter III. Think it's already out? You're correct. However, the tireless New Orleans mic fiend says he's dropping a new version of the album with all brand-new songs: He said clearly that the record is not — repeat not — Tha Carter IV.
Wayne also the MVP of the Year award, beating out Jay-Z, DJ Khaled, T.I. and Kanye West. He dedicated the award to his daughter.
Wayne's final words when accepting the award were, "I got a son dropping any day, pray for me." Weezy F. Baby is having another baby. Lil Wayne announced Saturday night during the... more

"If skills sold, Truth be told/I'd probably be/Lyrically/Talib Kweli" - Jay-Z
This one came out of nowhere and definitely caught our attention quick! It's a four minute trailer for a documentary on Talib Kweli. In those four minutes there are a number of cameos from artists speaking on Kweli and his influence. Some of the faces we see in the trailer are ?uestlove, Kanye West, Mos Def, Dave Chappelle, De La Soul, Common, Jean Grae, Pharrell, Dame Dash and many more. The project is ongoing and was started in 1999. I have been told the editing is near complete. We'll be sure to let you know as soon as we get more details on this. Shout out Video Rahim, the films director and editor."If skills sold, Truth be told/I'd probably be/Lyrically/Talib Kweli" -... more

Barack Obama has gotten a lot of attention from the Hip Hop community. After being name checked by Common, defended by Rhymefest, backed by Russell Simmons, and immortalized in a video by Will.I.Am, the Democratic presidential hopeful will now have a mix tape based on his campaign mantra, “Yes We Can” by DJ Green Lantern.
After hearing of Simmons’ endorsement of the Illinois Senator, Green decided to back Obama as well, with more than a verbal endorsement in the form.

Yeah i know I am on a K-os streak, but this is more so a question to anyone out there. Where is the good music I know what i think but I wanna know what you think. Tell Me where the true hip-hop is and not just that over commercial "sell your soul for a chain and a one hit wonder" music maker (it must be art for you to be an artist). I think K-Os has done an excellent job in making good music on an international scale along with a variety of other artists ranging from Little Brother, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Common, and so on. Yet, I maintain more real music needs to be recognized so inform the world.Yeah i know I am on a K-os streak, but this is more so a question to anyone out there.... more

Common [click to read] was recently speaking in North Carolina, where he caught up with HipHopDX. There, the Chicago veteran emcee talked about his forthcoming album Universal Mind Control. "I’m really excited about it and for me as long as I’ve been making music I always wanted to challenge myself. This album is a lot of free music, a lot of feel good music. I didn’t overthink the subject matters and made music you can dance too, ride out too, and have fun too. I wanted to give people something to smile about, enjoy, and let loose."
Within Universal Mind Control, Common says he has a song that really embodies the political climate America witnessed earlier this month in his home city. "I have a song called 'Changes' [click to listen] and it’s a reflection of what I see in the future, it’s changes going on right now. The youth really have a opportunity due to the fact we have Barack Obama in office. It’s due to the fact that people of all colors can see a black men, with his black women, and family can really do something powerful and lead this country. I wrote it probably five or six months ago, and it really fitting for the climate of the world right now."
Lastly, as artists ranging from Mos Def and 50 Cent have traded fourth quarter releases for a much less crowded 2009, Common explained his own push-back. "I originally was starting this album as an EP which was like a six song collection of songs. It was called Invincible Summer and I wanted to bring it out during the summertime. I did this film Terminator Salvation and I couldn’t finish the album in period I wanted to. I said, 'Man Universal Mind Control is the perfect title for the sound of the music. UMC fits the theme of what the album is about. That sounds like something from back in the days to something futuristic. Check me out on the website Zune.net, y'all can get the whole album for 99 cents the day the album is released, y'all can't beat that, my music is priceless. [Laughs]"

Rappers Kanye West, Method Man, Redman, Common and their record companies were sued on Thursday by late U.S. jazz musician Joe Farrell's daughter, who accused them of using her father's music without approval.
The lawsuit, filed by Kathleen Firrantello in the U.S. District Court in New York, names the rappers along with various labels owned by Universal Music Group./
None of the record companies or representatives for the rappers were immediately available for comment.
The lawsuit said all the rappers used portions of Farrell's 1974 musical composition "Upon This Rock" in three separate songs -- West in "Gone," Common in "Chi-City" and Method Man and Redman in their song "Run 4 Cover."
Firrantello is seeking punitive damages of at least $1 million and asked that no further copies of the songs be made, sold or performed, according to the lawsuit.Rappers Kanye West, Method Man, Redman, Common and their record companies were sued on... more

After years of quiet supremacy on the mic, Common broke through to the mainstream riding the wave of an active career and several endorsements. After a career resurgence courtesy of Kanye West, Common was on pace to be an emcee that garnered both critical and commercial acclaim for his musical efforts.
So why are critics panning his eighth effort, Universal Mind Control?
Surprisingly, Common received no love from one of his hometown papers, the Chicago Tribune. Critic Greg Kot juxtaposed much of the review for Control with the campaign of Barack Obama, calling the Common album “more of the same” that “brims with the most trivial and disposable music of [Common’s] career.”
Chicago’s other major paper, the Chicago Sun-Times also hammered the effort, and some of its superstar producers as well.
“As superstar producers the Neptunes deliver some of their weakest, most cliched and most phoned-in tracks ever -- heavy on the generic techno thumps, synth burbles and played-out vocoder backing vocals -- one of hip-hop's most accomplished freestylers drops one leaden rap after another. Most are about sex, although there also are a couple of uncharacteristic "ain't I great" boast-fests via ‘Gladiator’ and ‘What a World,’” critic Jim DeRogatis wrote.
Universal Mind Control hits store shelves Tuesday.
