RAW,Huge explosion at military base close to Turkmenistan's capital,Ashgabat (1382 people dead) - YouTubeAn explosion in a military depot outside Turkmenistan's capital, Ashgabat, have killed more 1382 people, according to Chronicles of Turkmenistan. (http://www.chrono-tm.org/?id=3220) Initially, the government denied reports of any casualties or major damage caused by the blasts, which were documented on video by Abadan residents. It took three days for the authorities to admit that 13 civilians and two military personnel had been killed.
According to eyewitnesses, the explosions occurred inside a large military depot. A government commission dealing with the consequences of the disaster found that "fire occurred as a result of very hot weather...[which] led to detonation of fireworks and their spreading to a larger territory, including an army warehouse with Soviet-era explosives."
Six days after the explosion of an ammunition depot in Abadan, Turkmenistan, residents cannot get answers from the authorities about their relatives, feared killed in the multiple blasts. They can still hear rockets exploding, but they're told this is just soldiers detonating any unexploded ordnance they find, Turkmen blogger Serdar Aytakov reports..
According to reports by human rights activists, 30 people, including newborns, died in a maternity clinic and 30 children who had gone to take a computer lesson at a school located near the power station were also killed. Only fragments of bodies remain in these cases, making it hard to identify victims. (Read further at http://www.eurasianet.org/node/63870)

President Obama has not simply tried to restrain the Freedom Flotilla for the sake of their own safety. His administration has pursued a multi-track effort to prevent Americans from participating, and is even implicitly threatening to imprison those who participate, making himself more like George Wallace than JFK.
Obama's FBI is now actively investigating 23 anti-war, anti-intervention activists, on the theory - recently upheld in Holder vs Humanitarian Law Project - that almost anything counts as "material aid to a terrorist organisation", even working with organisation members on non-violent alternatives to put an end to violence.President Obama has not simply tried to restrain the Freedom Flotilla for the sake of... more

Vessel seeking to break Israel's siege of Gaza Strip returns to Greek port after it was intercepted by armed commandos.
A boat carrying dozens of US activists seeking to break Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip has been towed back to port by a Greek coast guard after setting sail from a port in Greece.
The boat, dubbed The Audacity of Hope, is one of nine vessels carrying several hundred activists who say they want to deliver aid to the Palestinian territory. The boat left the port of Perama on Friday.
Joseph Dana, a journalist for the Nation magazine on board the boat told Al Jazeera that the ship left the port of Perama and sailed for an hour after which it was intercepted by a Greek coast guard ship that demanded it return to the port.
"We were surrounded by commandos pointing live weapons at the ship," he said.
"Now we are following one major coast guard vessel and we are [being] tracked by two other zodiac vessels.
"The commandos are still on board, but they are not pointing weapons anymore."
The boat is returning back to a port, but the ship is returning to a different port for fear of sabotage attempts, Dana said.
The Greek embassy in Tel Aviv put out a statement confirming that the Greek coast guard has enforced a decision by the Civil Defence to prevent all flotilla vessels from leaving Greek ports.
Greece's Civil Protection Ministry said coast guard authorities had been ordered to take "all appropriate measures'' to implement the ban.
It also said the "broader maritime area of the eastern Mediterranean will be continuously monitored by electronic means for tracking, where applicable, the movements of the ships allegedly participating'' in the flotilla.
"What I am witnessing right now at this moment is Israeli diplomatic pressure on the Greek government to ensure that these boats do not leave any port inside Greece," Dana said.
Meanwhile, activists from the Dutch-Italian ship on the Greek island of Corfu were also briefed by the flotilla organisers on Greece's decision to ban all boats from leaving.
Khaled Tuhraani, one of the leaders on the Italian-Dutch ship Stefano Chiarim, said that the activist should come up with "Plan B".
"Every group on board should consult each other about what they want to do next. We'll have another meeting tonight at ten o'clock to discuss all our options," Tuhraani said.
Some of the activists were clearly disappointed and angry, and suggested staging a protest against the Greek government in Athens.
Feeds from Twitter, the microblogging site, said that the Canadian boat dubbed Tahrir has been blocked from leaving by Greek authorities.
Israel has said it will thwart any effort to breach the blockade.
An Israeli raid on a similar flotilla last year left nine activists on a Turkish ship dead.
On Thursday, activists on board an Irish ship, the MV Saoirse, at the Turkish coastal town of Gocek, said it had to abandon plans to set sail because of what it called Israeli "sabotage".
Earlier this week, activists said Israeli agents damaged the propeller of a Swedish ship in the Greek port of Piraeus.
Israel has refused requests for comment on the allegations.

Organizers of the humanitarian flotilla to the Gaza Strip say another one of their ships has been sabotaged. The engine of an Irish ship docked in Turkey was reportedly so badly damaged it would have sunk in the middle of the ocean, threatening the lives of the passengers on board. It’s at least the second flotilla vessel to be targeted this week following damage to a Greek-Swedish ship docked in a port near Athens. Activists have accused Israel of orchestrating the sabotage, but say they have no direct proof. The Israeli government is trying to stop the ships from leaving port and has vowed to intercept them should they set sail. An Israeli official quoted in the Jerusalem Post said, the more "[they] have to run in place in Athens, the better it is for Israel." One of the ships in the 10-vessel flotilla is the U.S.-based "The Audacity of Hope," named after President Obama’s best-selling book. At least three dozen U.S. citizens are on board, carrying letters from Americans to the people of Gaza. Democracy Now! producer Aaron Maté and videographer Hany Massoud are in Greece to cover The Audacity of Hope’s journey. On Wednesday, Yonatan Shapira — a former Israeli Air Force pilot turned peace activist who is now a crew member on the U.S. boat — gave Democracy Now! a rare look inside the ship and talked about the threat of sabotage. “I see it as an obligation of me as an Israeli and a Jew to help steer the wheel of this boat into Gaza in order to challenge these war criminals, and to send this message to the Palestinian people, to the Palestinian children in Gaza and the rest of the world, that they are not alone and we support them, and one day, they will be free,” Shapira said.

Israel is in panic mode, and has asked the Greek government to intervene. Greece, in turn, has managed to fold under US and Israeli pressure by declaring the boat leased to the Americans for the voyage 'not seaworthy'. Greece has been at the heart of its very own economic crisis and on the verge of bankruptcy, and is dependent on its trade with Israel, a possible loan from the US controlled IMF and appears to be as much a victim of circumstances here as the Palestinians.
As for America, its behavior and rhetoric regarding the flotilla and its US citizens is nothing short of bewildering. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivered comments which were reminiscent of her "Egypt is a stable country' moment. In short, she warned the Americans bound for Gaza that their safety could not be guaranteed:
'We do not believe that the flotilla is a necessary or useful effort to try to assist the people of Gaza. And we think that it's not helpful for there to be flotillas that try to provoke actions by entering into Israeli waters and creating a situation in which the Israeli's have the right to defend themselves'
