In Ecuador's capital, Quito -located in the middle of the equator- hundreds of thousands of families have enjoyed the CicloPaseo in the Amazonas Avenue, every Sunday, for more than 10 years now. Sundays in the ciclovia have not only been fun family gatherings, but they have also brought economic, gastronomic, cultural, turistic and artistic development, along with the imporvement of safety and environmental conditions throughout the Amazonas Avenue. The City Council and the people of Quito have contributed to the development of the Ecuadorian capital with such activities.
A ciclovia has been recently opened in the streets of Chicago and will soon happen in Miami. Quito's Ciclo Paseo has been a model for Chicago and other cities that seek to develop this activity within their communities, and was home to the Third Annual Ciclovia Conference. For the people of Quito, and Ecuador in general, the ciclovia is not a big news any more. It is just one more way that the Quitenos found to gather the community and enjoy the beautiful weather of the city without spending as much money. Poverty makes men find ways of enjoyng life in a different way. See? It so happens that in far, small parts of the world fun things do happen! The new Millenium Paper Airplane Contest and corresponding book by Klara Hobza is a multifaceted artwork inspired by a historic paper airplane contest that took place in 1967 at the Great Hall in what is now the New York Hall of Science. Built by Wallace K. Harrison to display rockets in the 1964 World's Fair, the Great Hall is a secular cathedral of concrete and colored glass; for Hobza's one-day event, this unique location will harbor aircraft of a different scale.
Commissioned by Public Art Fund, the competition is open to the public. Come with your plane or fold it on site! Submissions are welcome for all categories: distance flown, duration aloft, beauty, and spectacular failure. There will also be a surprise category and a special children's division for participants under 13. For people unable to attend the event, airplanes can be submitted to be flown by proxies.
Qualifying airplanes may be folded from letter-size paper, up to 8.5" x 11" (or A4) or smaller, using average weight office paper. Cutting and minor gluing of airplanes is permitted; stapling is not. Detailed information about THE NEW MILLENNIUM PAPER AIRPLANE CONTEST as well as specific instructions for submitting airplanes, event pre-registration, contest rules, and book information may be found at www.publicartfund.org. Further questions about the project may be addressed to paperairplanes@publicartfund.org.
Notable planes and the stories behind their design will be collected in a commemorative book by the artist, THE NEW MILLENNIUM PAPER AIRPLANE BOOK, published by Public Art Fund in spring 2009. The book will consist of airplane designs that can be torn out, folded, and flown, as well as stories by their creators.
Klara Hobza's previous works have focused on the human desire to communicate and explain, often exploring obscure information systems. Much of her work is performance based, and she utilizes various forms of documentation, from photography and drawing to videos, websites and vast archives of ephemera to circumscribe her practice. THE NEW MILLENNIUM PAPER AIRPLANE CONTEST is Hobza's first project to result in a book.
Hobza was born in Plzen, Czech Republic and currently lives and works in New York City. She received her MFA from Columbia University in 2005. Her work is currently on view in exhibitions at Moderna Museet, Stockholm, and Malmo Kunstmuseum, Malmo.

Meeting
Inaugural Group Exhibition
November 8 – December 4, 2008
Opening reception, Saturday, November 8, 7 – 11PM
Los Angeles, CA November 8, 2008 – The Conference Room Gallery, in celebration of its new space where West Adams and Culver City meet inside one of Adams Blvd many Movie palaces from a long gone era, is excited to present its inaugural exhibition, Meeting . This group exhibition will feature emerging artists that work in a multiplicity of mediums, discipline and execution. Each artist will represent or reflect the message and vision of blurring the lines between the hierarchies of trained artists and self taught artists.
Meeting features 18 intoxicating new artists: Billy Reynolds, Michael Pajon, Bask, Ryan Pratt, Justin Amrhein, Joshua Krause, Robert Burnier, Darren Breen, Chase Tafoya, JoKa, Barry Wolfryd, Clinton Neuhaus, Paul Torres, Greg Lukens, Mat Taylor, Fabrice Lavollay, Ernie Velasco and Eli Sipsas. This exhibition will be for some, a first time showing before the Los Angeles art audience. Each artist represents the evolvement of their work as are newer versions of software, electronics, automobiles, in modern rapid succession.
Burnier, Velasco, Krause, and Bask are all self-taught artists stemming from found objects, urban pop, melancholy, theoretical conclusions and constant compulsions and manipulations of objects and tools, yet Pratt, Sipsas & Torres each represent a 15 year span of learning from the same school, Pajon, Lavollay, JoKa, Amrhein, Wolfryd, Reynolds, Lukens, Breen and Tafoya each finished art programs from prominent schools and universities throughout the United States and Internationally and all have wildly different approaches, mediums and styles where the artist having the degree could be interpreted as self-taught and the self-taught artist could be interpreted as decorated art college training. But all are emerging masters of their chosen medium and as any quality piece evolves only to have learned from their past success and works, striving to stretch and improve upon the original.
Each artist brings with them a different medium or completely different use of the same medium, from oil on linen to digital editions on archival paper. Their choices and uses of anything that comes to their minds to obtain their desired effect is exactly as the overall philosophy of the gallery.
The artists featured in the Meeting exhibition will either be holding a solo, two or three person exhibition throughout the year and 2009.

Meat After Meat Joy brings together the work of contemporary artists who use meat in their work (raw meat, the concept of
meat, its symbolism and viscera) in order to investigate the paradoxical relationship meat has to the body. Meat combines flesh, skin, muscle, organs, blood — each with its own relationship to the body, yet meat’s only reference to the body is as a once-upon-a-time living biological thing.
By putting these artists together, the exhibition seeks to investigate the uncanny effect meat as a medium is for artist and viewer. This is not a show about meat as spectacle but about meat as signification, precisely because meat does not signify (a body) but its very annihilation.Meat After Meat Joy brings together the work of contemporary artists who use meat in... more

Our mission is simple: We aim to educate and promote Latino talent, while combating stereotypes that harm our communities. The programs presented by the Society encompass a broad range of Latino cultural expression and give a rich and varied view of the social, political and economic perspectives of Latinos both here in the United States and across the continents. Our LGBT, Jewish, Afro-Latino, Women’s and Emerging Filmmaker’s programs are essential to our work. We actively seek out and showcase these voices, going beyond national borders and focusing on our humanity and universality.

The list of banned and censored books is long and storied, but there are more than a few surprises in the "Banned and Recovered: Artists Respond to Censorship" show. Sure, Henry Miller's "Tropic of Cancer" is a little racy, as is the work of the Marquis de Sade, but Mark Twain? Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings"? "Aesop's Fables"? The Harry Potter series? The American Heritage Dictionary?
The exhibition has a simple premise: Artists illustrate one or more of their favorite banned books. The works, which came from book and multimedia artists, take a variety of forms, from a reworked edition of the book itself to sculptures, video and paintings.
"Think of an interesting book, and there's a good chance it will have been banned or challenged by a school board," says Steve Woodall, artistic director of the San Francisco Center for the Book, one of the show's two venues.
The exhibition, with 63 artists, was curated by Hanna Regev, who has been involved in the nonprofit advocacy group the First Amendment Project. The show will be split between the African American Museum and Library at Oakland and the Center for the Book, with the larger pieces going to Oakland.
The range of art in the show is impressive. "The artists were given no guideline other than to address the theme," Woodall says. "For instance, Nigel Poor has taken nine books with women's names in the titles that were considered dirty books and put them in the washing machine and the dryer, and then took the lint and made these abstract panels."
Some, like Bay Area artist Kara Maria, took an abstract approach - her painting based on "Tropic of Cancer" does not depict any of the book's characters.
Other offerings include a sheet metal sculpture based on James Joyce, puppets from Sandow Birk's video of Dante's "Inferno," a carved-up version of Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" by Brian Dettmer, a diptych from Enrique Chagoya on William S. Burroughs and two versions of Darwin's "Origin of the Species."
This show doesn't present censorship as a historical issue - book banning is very much alive in the United States today. "I think it's good to publicize this issue, particularly in an election year, when seats of the Supreme Court are at stake," Woodall says. "In this way, artists get to show their solidarity with writers."
