This photo -- of the Palms casino in Las Vegas -- and this blog comment by Diplo both really got to the heart of what made DJ AM so amazing.
From Diplo:
"How many people do u know DJ wedding partys for billionaires, arenas for Jay z, and djs for roctakons shitty basment party in manhattan for free and then 20 k the next night.. each day he was still asking me for new music and tellin me how the wierdest of my tracks were starting to pick up momentum….. but.. i never knew how long it would last. Djs have a ceiling, and Am lived on the roof."
I only heard him spin once, at a dumb Hollywood party I was covering for an old job. But I remember looking around and thinking, Oh, so that's what all the big deal is about. It's not hype at all.

So many news stories in the last few hours it's a bit overwhelming, even here at Current Music HQ. And there have been a lot of pretty nasty comments -- some of which come from a very sincere and frustrated place with the man he seemed to have become, and some of which just seem short-sighted and cruel.
I'm thinking about this quote from Ann Powers in the LA Times (http://bit.ly/EM2Ob): "Baby boomers have "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "Pet Sounds," but for subsequent generations "Thriller" remains pop's ultimate artistic endeavor."

Jay Bennett, best known for his work as a multi-instrumentalist and co-songwriter for Wilco from 1994-2001, died in his sleep Sunday night. His contributions to Wilco helped break the band into mainstream success and created a sonic landscape that redefined the sound of alt-country. Bennett also played in several other bands including Titanic Love Affair and released 5 solo albums.

The most heart breaking part of the aptly titled Wilco documentary I Am Trying to Break Your Heart is when Jay Bennett leaves the band and performs a solo concert featuring his Tweedy-less compositions. If you were to ask Bennett, he was the McCartney to Jeff Tweedy's Lennon. But Tweedy clearly didn't agree. And judging by the live performance, most viewers probably didn't either. This, coupled with the recent news that Bennett had sued Tweedy over Wilco royalties makes the announcement of Mr. Bennett's death at the age of 45 all the more tragic. Natasha Richardson, a film star, Tony-winning stage actress and member of the famed Redgrave acting family, has died after suffering injuries in a ski accident. She was 45.
