Ringo Starr returned to the iconic Capitol Records Tower and a gathering of several hundred Beatles fans to celebrate the unveiling of his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday night. "I want to thank Capitol Records," Starr said to cheers, glancing up at the tower. "It's nice to look at a building that you helped pay for." The ceremony began as a column of local high school marching band drummers in red uniforms poured out the tower lobby pounding a festive beat. "OK, drummers!" announced Starr as he stepped to the podium, where the occasion was marked with speeches from Joe Walsh, Ben Harper and Don Was. "It's also cool to get it at night," Starr said, dressed in a black suit and shades. "Where I live the stars come out at night... To: Parole Court of NY
We the undersigned believe that Mark David Chapman should not be granted parole for the murder of John Lennon.
Chapman committed a heinous crime, unprovoked and without remorse. He shot to death John Lennon, a man who had signed an autograph for him only six hours earlier. He deserves to pay for this with life in prison.
It is also a matter of public safety that he not be released. He should not be free to harm anyone else. Please remember Mr. John Lennon, who believed in peace. Please remember that Mark David Chapman is forty-nine years old, and John Lennon never got to be older than forty.
Please do not let this man back on the streets.
R.I.P.
John Winston Ono Lennon

Dhani Harrison was on track to become a race-car designer before his father's death in 2001. But when he stepped in to help finish his dad's posthumous album Brainwashed, the life of a musician seemed like the way to go.
Dhani is, of course, the son of The Beatles' George Harrison. He looks exactly like his father around 1967: the hollow cheeks, wisps of facial hair, deep brown eyes. But his sound is something completely different — and he also took a less orthodox route to making and distributing his music.
He quietly built a solid and loyal following online, and started releasing his music through iTunes and the video game Rock Band. But he didn't do it under the name Dhani Harrison — this was with his band thenewno2, whose debut album is called You Are Here.

It's not iTunes, but Apple Corps and EMI are finally offering a legit way to grab digital Beatles tracks. This Apple-shaped stick has FLAC and MP3 versions of the new CD set: all the band's music re-mastered in stereo.
FLAC quality is 44.1Khz 24 bit, and MP3 is 320 Kbps. Only 30,000 will be made, and it goes on sale November 8 for $280 (pre-orders are now live). The stick is $60 more than the CD set, but die-hard fans get "all of the re-mastered CDs' visual elements, including 13 mini-documentary films about the studio albums, replicated original UK album art, rare photos and expanded liner notes."

4. Gremlins (1984)
Hahaha hohoho. Just thinking about the premise of “Gremlins” makes my belly shake just like it would anyone able to see it under its PG rating. I mean, the movie is about a mysterious sentient guinea pig-teddy bear called a Mogwai who gives birth to slimy eggs pods that produce scaly evil monsters that in turn torture the Mogwai and murder humans. What’s not hilarious about that? Oh. Everything? Right.
The gremlins birthed by the cute and cuddly Gizmo the Mogwai are some of the most ruthless and cunning killers ever put on screen. The fact that sometimes they could dress up, smoke a cigar, and joke around just made their level of depravity that much higher. They wanted nothing more than to break stuff an kill people. It was their only goal in life. “Gremlins” gets by with a PG rating while some sappy schlock like “American Pie” is considered not appropriate for youths under 17. Good grief.

8. Happiness is a Warm Gun / The Beatles
Speaking of Lennon/McCartney and seriously speaking of subtle lyrics, try reading the title of this song another way. Like:
-------
Ha/Pee nes/ Is a warm gun.
-------
Or, A Penis is a Warm Gun, if one still doesn’t get it. That makes these lyrics all the better:
-------
(When I hold you in my arms) Oooooooooh, oh yeah!/ And when I feel my finger on your trigger/ Oooooooooh, oh yeah!/ I know nobody can do me no harm/ Oooooooooh, oh yeah!/ Happiness (is a warm gun, momma)/ Bang Bang Shoot Shoot Happiness (is a warm gun)/ Bang Bang Shoot Shoot/ Yes it is, gun! Happiness (is a warm gun)
-------
Frankly, the song would have made the list just for its opening lyrics:
-------
She’s not a girl who misses much Do do do do do do, oh yeah/ She’s well acquainted with the touch of the velvet hand Like a lizard on a window pane/ The man in the crowd with the multicolored mirrors On his hobnail boots/ Lying with his eyes while his hands are busy Working overtime/ A soap impression of his wife which he ate And donated to the National Trust
-------
7. Behind Blue Eyes / The Who
This is another song that kinda sounds pretty, so it must be, like, romantic or something, right? Nah, Townsend was was/is fucked up.
-------
No one knows what its like/ To be hated/ To be fated/ To telling only lies/ But my dreams They arent as empty/ As my conscience seems to be/ I have hours, only lonely/ My love is vengeance/ Thats never free
-------
There might be an official explanation regarding this song that a bigger fan of The Who would know. But I won’t believe it.
6. Suddenly There is a Tidal Wave / Magnetic Fields
Stephin Merritt is probably one of the best and most ironic song-writers ever. His music is full of juxtaposition and twists between music and lyric and the gender roles, etc. ‘Tidal Wave’ is another pretty sounding song. But it’s more like it was ripped from ‘Donnie Darko.’
-------
You held me upside-down/ Till I couldn’t breathe anymore/ Then you held me like a baby/ Television, like wine; and cigarettes, like grains of sand;/ And raspberry schnapps, like a thousand sunsets./ The boys talk like they own the world/ The women keep their stupid diaries/ But suddenly there’s a tidal wave/ And everything is sucked out to sea./ There were probably birds/ Outside our little room I don’t remember anything but you/ We must have been the butt Of all the jokes in the world/ For trying to live like Pippi Longstocking.

So I figured, while I’m in London interviewing some of the people involved with PIRATE RADIO, Richard Curtis’ film about those intrepid souls who in the 60’s brought the UK their daily dose of rock when the BBC was loathe to, why not try a little experiment in whether one dude with a netbook, a pocket camcorder, a copy of QuickTime Pro, and his hotel’s complimentary WiFi service can beat the international news bureaus at their own game? Hence this episode of MMP, our first video episode, wherein some Londoners voice their preference for film’s original, British title, THE BOAT THAT ROCKED, or the title it’ll be carrying in the U.S.
A few technical notes: First, if you’re watching this ep on Sunday the 18th or Monday the 19th, then mission accomplished — I’m actually still in London conducting my interviews. Next, I have to admit that cutting in QuickTime doesn’t allow for the most elegant product (I believe the sage physician Leonard McCoy coined the most fitting analogy: “Threading a needle with a sledgehammer”). Finally, this ep may not play on an iPod. Sorry, I just didn’t have enough time to research the proper formats. I’d appreciate hearing if you were able to see this ep or not. Just use the comments form on the MMP website.
In any case, please enjoy my chiseled good looks, and a set of rather interesting opinions on one of the more pressing issues of the day. (Okay, maybe I have to get my priorities straight.)So I figured, while I’m in London interviewing some of the people involved with... more

Lucy of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” just died, but whatever happened to Peggy Sue, Sweet Caroline, Delilah, and Beethoven’s Elise?
Lucy Vodden—aka “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” passed away this week after a battle with lupus, reigniting the story behind the classic Beatles’ hit (Lucy and Julian Lennon were nursery school classmates). In our gallery, The Daily Beast takes a look back at the other great muses of rock, including Caroline Kennedy, Carole King, Rosanna Arquette, Peggy Sue, Mozart’s mistress, and a real-estate agent in California who goes by “Sharona.”Lucy of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” just died, but whatever happened... more
