In this illuminating bar chat, film buffs discuss two of the most insightful comedies of our time, Four Lions and In The Loop. Guest expert and media lecturer Dr Philip Hammond argues that comedy has provided greater insights into the nature of terrorism and the war on terror than straight documentaries and drama. The absurdity, political emptiness and narcissism expressed by the characters in these films captures accurately the nature of both suicide bombers and the war on terror, says Dr Hammond. As the Boston marathon explosions capture our imagination and pose an uncanny resemblance to the plot in Four Lions, Dr Hammond’s point is extremely timely. In this illuminating bar chat, film buffs discuss two of the most insightful comedies... more

The sad history of state-sponsored ethnic cleansing in North America begins with the story of the British expulsion of the Acadians in 1755. Professor Amy Sturgis explains that the Acadians were peaceful French colonists who had prospered in Nova Scotia. The British forcibly removed the Acadians from their homes and scattered them across North America. The expulsion effectively ended the Acadian way of life forever. How might U.S. history have been different if this first ethnic cleansing had never occurred? How might America be different today if the Acadians' property and rights had been respected? Might the Acadian way of life have influenced the United States for the better?

Two British tourists holidaying in Florida begged for their lives with their trousers pulled down before they were mercilessly shot dead, a court has heard.
Shawn Tyson, who turned 17 on Monday, is said to have murdered James Cooper, 25, and James Kouzaris, 24, after they drunkenly stumbled into the rundown Newtown neighbourhood of Sarasota.
He allegedly forced the terrified pair to pull down their trousers before firing a volley of shots.
Tyson is accused of going to rob the best friends in April 2011, and then killing them when they said they did not have any money.
Tyson faces a life sentence if convicted, but will not face the death penalty because of his age.
The court in Sarasota heard how the two British holidaymakers were dining and drinking in the city's downtown with Cooper's parents on the night of April 15.
The entire party was staying at a Longboat Key beach condo. Cooper's parents went back to the condo in a car and urged the two young men to take a cab back home.
The pair went to two bars and left on foot after several drinks.
But shortly before 3am, they ended up in a crime-ridden neighbourhood more than a mile from the bars. Witnesses said they saw Cooper and Kouzaris walking shirtless and stumbling through the neighbourhood.
They also reported that they were being followed by two black men, one with a red bandanna around part of his face.

Freelance journalist Lizzie Phelan talking about the Brit's crackdown on Iranian freedom of speech and Truth about SyriaIn a questionable move and without offering a valid response to the Press TV CEO's letters, the British Office of Communications (Ofcom) has revoked Press TV's broadcasting license and finally removed the channel from the Sky platform. Press TV has interviewed Lizzie Phelan, freelance journalist, Damascus about Britain's hypocrisy in condemning other countries over freedoms of expression while abusing those freedoms at home and how actions by British state institution OFCOM reflects the demands of the one percent. What follows is an approximate transcription of the interview. --------------- Meanwhile in Syria ------------ About four days ago I visited Zabadani late at night after watching an Al-Arabiya report that stated thousands of so-called "Free Syrian Army" officers had taken the city. Later the channel showed footage of a convoy of approximately 10 cars filled with armed fighters apparently in the city. When I drove into the city, there was just one checkpoint on the way in. The legitimate Syrian Army soldiers there who were busy building a fire to keep warm in light snow waved us through. We drove for about ten minutes into the city and the streets were completely dead, nno gunshots no "Free Syrian Army" checkpoints, nothing. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/recent-news/43053-freelance-journalist-lizzie-phelan-talking-about-the-brits-crackdown-on-iranian-freedom-of-speechIn a questionable move and without offering a valid response to the Press TV... more

Look out Ayatollah and Ahmadinejad
I new the count of returning service men just didn't seem right. It was as if some of them were still in the Mideast after Iraq. I had heard they went to Kuwait. Well surprise, 9000 of them are currently landing in Israel. The name of the operation is Austere Challenge 12. It is part of the largest joint US and Israel war game ever.
Is this a game changer after Iran's warning to stay out of The Strait of Hormuz? Well this blogger says it is to allies acting like allies preparing and waving sabers at a world wide threat. This not as much a game as it is a statement as many war games are.
On top of everything else great Britain who has for and against everything lately has made a commitment. Yesterday, January 5, 2012 the British Secretary of Defense told the United States' think tank the Atlantic Council that the US and British would stop the closing of the Straits. Forty Percent of the oil in the world flows through this area. Iran accounts for 15% of the oil.
This may possibly be an attempt to fix the mess that Carter created when he help depose the Shau. We got the Ayatollah Khomeni and a Islamic Theocratic Despot. Let us not forget the holocaust denying President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. It could also mean a clear shot at taking care of any nuclear armaments that Iran has or may be planning. Why would a country with 15% of the worlds oil need a nuclear energy plant?
Unfortuneately the pilot Ilam Roman from Israel died in the shuttle crash over Houston. He was the youngest pilot in the operation that destroyed Iraq's nuclear facility. No one would have know how to take the plant out in Iran with more skill.Look out Ayatollah and Ahmadinejad I new the count of returning service men just... more

The original initiative to oust Mossadegh had come from the British, for the elderly Iranian leader had spearheaded the parliamentary movement to nationalize the British owned Anglo-lranian Oil Company (AIOC), the sole oil company operating in Iran. In March 1951, the bill for nationalization was passed, and at the end of April Mossadegh was elected prime minister by a large majority of Parliament. On 1 May, nationalization went into effect. The Iranian people, Mossadegh declared, "were opening a hidden treasure upon which lies a dragon". http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/recent-news/43032-iran-1953-us-military-and-cia-intervention-killing-hope-free-bookThe original initiative to oust Mossadegh had come from the British, for the elderly... more
