Instant access to the entire history of music is killing new music, argues controversial composer Glenn Branca.
Branca has published an opinion piece in the New York Times that suggests that today's technology is killing the development of new music:
We seem to be on the edge of a paradigm shift. Orchestras are struggling to stay alive, rock has been relegated to the underground, jazz has stopped evolving and become a dead art, the music industry itself has been subsumed by corporate culture and composers are at their wit’s end trying to find something that’s hip but still appeals to an audience mired in a 19th-century sensibility.
Branca blames this perceived stagnation on the instant, immediate access we have nowadays to the entire history of music:
Of course, we could all just listen to all of our old albums, CD’s and mp3’s. In fact, nowadays that’s where the industry makes most of its money. We could also just watch old movies and old TV shows. There are a lot of them now. Why bother making any new ones? Why bother doing anything new at all? Why bother having any change or progress at all as long as we’ve got “growth”? I’m just wondering if this is in fact the new paradigm. I’m just wondering if in fact the new music is just the old music again. And, if that in fact it would actually just be the end of music.
It would be easy to dismiss Branca's editorial as the ravings of a curmudgeon. There's new music everywhere these days, right? It's harder to find some quiet.
But there's also some truth to Branca's take on the state of music.
If you're going to play jazz, your music will be compared to 100 years of recordings of jazz artists. If you're going to play classical music, you've got to deal with the fact that audiences can stay home and listen to fantastic recordings of their favorite classical standards. And pop music? Innovation there often seems limited to visual design and fashion.
People like to pin the blame for the relatively tame output of the music industry on the major labels. The labels are just giving people what they want, though.
Branca may be a curmudgeon, but he highlights one of the biggest challenges facing musicians in the 21st century: tearing people away from the music that they know and love long enough to try something new.Instant access to the entire history of music is killing new music, argues... more

“Man in the Moose Suit” is the seemingly wacky, psychedelic music video created by Ryan Glenn for the international debut of indie-pop singer Andrew Collberg. Collberg’s warm voice touches and seduces the heart, resurrecting the sounds of John Lennon, The Band, Bob Dylan and Neil Young. But beneath the disarmingly melodic music of “Man in the Moose Suit” is a message that’s both quirky and raw.
The fellow who’s waiting for the end to come in this video is confronted with images of birthdays gone terribly wrong; an elementary school uprising; tattooed, smoking and gun-toting nuns; and the town beauty queen festooned with raggedy toilet-paper decorations. He watches the heart-rending parade of everyday life going berserk, waiting for the end to come. And when the last of the sideshows has finally passed him by, the poor man is left sitting all alone on the dusty curb, a single tear running down his cheek.
This piece includes a number of colorful photographs, as well as Collberg's very poignant, bittersweet music video.

Tobacco is a side-project of Tom Fec, frontman of Black Moth Super Rainbow. This is the music video for the track Gross Magik off of the 2008 album, Fucked Up Friends, which is wholly incredible if you dig this track. Aesop Rock is even featured on a track off of Fucked Up Friends that is gritty and raw called Dirt. Perhaps my favorite thing about all of these Tobacco music videos is that Richard Simmons makes multiple appearances.

In case you have yet to hear, wait what (Charlie Kubal) did a mashup of 2009 buzz artist The xx and hip hop legend Biggie Smalls. the album is absolutely incredible, redefining the possibilities of mash-up music in my opinion. this album used to be available for free download but it is no longer allowed because of the hiphop side of the project however, it's all over mediafire (google - notorious xx mediafire). i suggest downloading and playing on repeat for months at the least. it's what i did. watch the video and see for yourself. EPIC

This song from the most recent version of King Arthur with Clive Owen and Keira Knightley is without a doubt one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. It is erotic and haunting. It is sung by Maire ( Moya) Brennan, sister of Enya, and the music is by Hans Zimmer. General reviews of the movie were mediocre, but I loved it and I love the emotions this song evokes. This song from the most recent version of King Arthur with Clive Owen and Keira... more

We are taking an unprecedented approach to releasing our record through a website called Kickstarter.com and we hope that this do-it-yourself approach will give bands back some power in a music business that is so unstable that people are losing sight of the point of it all: to make their lives happier through the enjoyment of the sonic experience.Using Stop Motion Animation and with no external help (and over 130 hours of editing... more

In 2007, it all began again for James O and Sid Slonaker. Being staples in the Denver music scene, they are not strangers to the stage, studio or to each other. Not only are they long time friends but they also have worked together previously. Saucy JAck was one of their projects and together they endured a five-year run and a high level of success. After Saucy JAck dismantled, both James and Sid did side projects with Georgia Holman and Triple 7.
At this point, it was time to start something new, and that is what these two guys did. C4x began playing shows in 2009 as a two-piece. However, after a few gigs in they added Chris Rodriquez to the line up on bass. Chris is also a veteran of the Denver music scene and is especially known for his work with two studio projects Rag Doll and The Riffs on which he played, produced and released on his label R.I.F.F.S RECORDS.
Also in 2009 the band received some good media coverage and exposure through Allegany Magazine out of Maryland where they did their first interview. They also received radio play with their song Crash when it debuted on KTCL 93.3 “Locals Only” show. Not only did the band gain a sponsorship from Viper Drums but also has other companies tracking its progress for future endorsement deals. Amongst playing some great venues and local shows C4x also had the opportunity to share the stage with some great touring bands in 2009 as well.
C4x is a straightforward explosive rock n roll power trio. They employ and live by a very DIY code of ethics and attitude. They build their songs up from good simple, solid backbeats and groove combinations with melodic bass lines and brilliant guitar work that flows over the top with driving riffs. As far as songwriting goes, these guys supply more hooks than a bait shop and James' vocals deliver each line with heartfelt emotion and plenty of attitude. C4x has a defined sound that is all their own.

Hey Currentians,
It's Friday. It's a little after 5pm. It's time for the top 5 fastest growing groups on Current. Today's top spot goes to Indie Music, curated by Mike_Johnston. Here's the full list:
1. Indie Music (4 new members) -- curated by Mike_Johnston
2. Progressive America (12 new members) -- curated by Sumbodyswatchin
3. H.E.M.P. (2 new members) -- curated by JackHerer
4. Drug News (2 new members) -- curated by WTFitsMeSarah
5. Organic (2 new members) -- curated by lookatmypix
So a big huzzah! for Indie Music, which is now featured in the "Current Stories" section of the Current.com homepage, as well our Groups homepage. Keep it up!
For the rest of you, why not check out Indie Music for yourselves, and if you like what you see consider joining the Indie Music group.
I just wanted to clear up a question asked by Hunzedog re: our Fastest Growing Groups posts -- what are the rules and frequency of the post?
The rules are simple:
- Each day at around 3pm, I pull together a list of groups that have had the most new members in the past 24 hours.
- This is about the groups you guys create, so I exclude groups for our franchises like SuperNews!, Vanguard, infoMania, Max and Jason: Still Up, etc.
- After a top spot placement, a group must cycle out for a full 7 days before being back in the running. So for example, Indie Music will not be eligible for a top spot again until next Friday.
- Sometimes things come up preventing the post. We don't anticipate this happening often, but we also can't promise that it won't happen. Apologies in advance for these.
Well, I hope that clears things up. It's time for the weekend, so spend some time with your groups, try to grow them as best you can, but be sure to take some time out for sunshine and fresh air.
See you next Monday with a new top 5!Hey Currentians,
It's Friday. It's a little after 5pm. It's time for... more

“Hot Black” is the hot new animated music video that was written and hand-drawn by Ofir Sasson for HotBlack, a track by Ontario’s indie band Oceanship from their eponymous debut album. Starring Little Sheep and Big Wolf, the animation sadly confirms the poor wolf’s most terrible fear, namely that it’s not what it looks like…it’s even worse! Furthermore, you should set your sights very carefully when aiming for revenge, otherwise you might end up losing everything you had.
This piece includes a number of illustrations, as well as the animated music video, “Hot Black.”
