This is a telling portrait of what it is like to come out. Too bad that his mother, his mom, couldn't be a little more accepting. She was worried about his spiritual well being. You can see this man's anguish and holding back his tears at times while trying to get his mother's acceptance. I actually watched the whole thing. This is a telling portrait of what it is like to come out. Too bad that his mother,... more

Outsports, who broke the story of three young gay teens who blog for athletic equality, has put a blurb up on their site about the facebook page created to help Brad, Robert and Ben reach their dream of getting on The Ellen Show.
If Betty White can get a guest host spot on Saturday Night Live, Brad, Robert and Ben should be able to appear on the Ellen Show.
Called Brad, Robert and Ben for ELLEN the Generous, anyone can join to help generate some excitement for getting these young men invited onto The Ellen de Generes Show.
http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_174715022569787
Brad, Robert and Ben are young, gay and athletic. Each of them wants to be "out", safe accepted and playing sports. To that end they created a blog called "Walk the Road: One Common Goal", intended to change the way teenage gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning athletes are viewed in the sports world. They are all varsity athletes in high school.
http://bradrobertben.wordpress.com/about-us/
Outsports.com was founded by Jim Buzinski and Cyd Zeigler, Jr. They live in Los Angeles and met playing flag football. They've been shooting hoops, catching passes, cheering on the Chiefs, Pats, Nittany Lions, and Cardinal for years - before they knew they were gay, and ever since.
Outsports LLC is based in Los Angeles and was founded in Nov. 2000.
Outsports' mission is to build the broadest, deepest, most informative and most entertaining gay sports community. This encompasses sports fans, teams and leagues. A mixture of breaking news, commentary, features, member profiles, photo galleries, and discussion boards, Outsports is the place to go for sports fans and athletes. Suicides prompt pastor to come out

Pastor says student's suicide was tipping point for his coming out
The founder and pastor of a Georgia megachurch said Saturday that the September suicide of a Rutgers University student was the tipping point for his decision to come out of the closet to his congregation.
"For some reason, his situation was kind of the tipping point with me," said Jim Swilley, who calls himself as a bishop. "There comes a point in your life where you say - how much time do we have left in our lives? Are we going to be authentic or not?"
Rutgers student Tyler Clementi, 18, jumped off a bridge after a secretly-taped sexual encounter between him and another man was posted on the internet.
Swilley, 52, said that he has known he is gay since childhood, but that he never thought he would live openly. He came out recently after more than 20 years of marriage to his former wife, who continues to work at their church.
"At a certain point, you are who you are," said Swilley, who has four children from two marriages.
He ministers at the Church in the Now, an inter-donominational Christian church in Conyers, Georgia, about 25 miles east of Atlanta.
"What I told my church is that I was given two things in my life that I didn't ask for... one is the call of God in my life and the other is my orientation. I didn't ever think that those two things could be compatible," Swilley said.
On the whole, he said his congregation has been supportive of his coming out, though some people have cut ties with him over the decision.
Homosexuality is a hotly contested issue by many faith traditions.
Earlier this month, Gene Robinson - the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church - said that death threats and the continued controversy around his selection contributed to his decision to announce his retirement.
Speaking specifically about evangelicals, Swilley said gay people are sometimes seen as trying to build a movement, or "recruiting" - views he took serious issue with.
"My position is not about gaying up the church," he said. "It's about people being who they are."

After months of speculation that Bert on Sesame Street is gay, the famous childrens' show has now publically come out to state the opposite. As so many in-jokes gone wrong it all started on Twitter. On June 11 Bert (or his puppet master) tweeted about the recent "A-Team" remake by comparing himself to A-Team star Mr-T, saying:
"Ever notice how similar my hair is to Mr. T's? The only difference is mine is a little more 'mo,' a little less 'hawk.'"
To some his comment was just a cheeky quip about hairstyles, but to others more in the know "mo" is short for "homo" and this was Bert's way of coming out of the closet. For anyone in tune with their gaydar the clues were always there, Bert and his best friend Ernie were clearly more than just that. They have been happily living together for 31 years, they like to wear “his & his” pyjamas, and they have been sharing a bed for as long as we can remember. It didn’t help matters that June is the month of global Pride marches, so it didn’t take long before the AfterElton.com’s and AfterEllen.com’s started to pass on the good news that Bert and Ernie might be the US’s new hot gay couple. Nearly four months after the "in joke" was publicised it is even more out than Bert, as media organisations across the globe (including Current.com) speculating if Bert really did out himself on Twitter? The answer to that question is “No” said Ellen Lewis, spokeswoman for "Sesame Street's" production company, Sesame Workshop.
"Our writer had no intention of implying anything by the tweet, no agenda and no idea that it would be interpreted any other way except that the 'A-Team' movie was out and Bert has, like, a mini-mohawk, so her intention was just a fun way to split up the word just to imply that his hairstyle is a shorter derivative of a longer Mohawk that Mr. T in the A-team wore," Lewis told FoxNews.com.
But this is hardly the first time Bert or Ernie has been accused of being gay, in his book The Real Thing (1980) Kurt Andersen writes:"Bert and Ernie conduct themselves in the same loving, discreet way that millions of gay men, women and hand puppets do. They do their jobs well and live a splendidly settled life together in an impeccably decorated cabinet."

This year as we approach National Coming Out Day (NCOD) I’ve had a different feeling than in the past. Normally, I would let the day slide by and not really think about it. It’s never held a huge significance in my life. And I’ve always thought, why just one day out of the year? However, this year it hit me — the connection finally hit me — LGBT youth are three times as likely to attempt suicide. LGBT youth need role models. LGBT youth need hope.
So I decided to celebrate the whole month with stories from readers and people prominent in the LGBT community, as a way to bring hope to those in our community who are still in the closet, or struggling with the process of coming out. We all know it can be difficult and it’s a process that one has to do on one’s own time frame, but no one should have to do it alone.
Here is my call. I ask you to write down your story, or record it on video. Tell us how you felt about it, tell us how people reacted, tell us what it meant for and to you, and what time this took place, in your life and in society. We all know that during these times in our lives we’ve needed hope and encouragement. If you’re comfortable, we would love to have a head shot of you or a photo of you and your loved one.
For the 31 days of October I am going to post a story a day (maybe two if I have enough!) here at The New Civil Rights Movement, to highlight people, of all sexual orientations and identities, who have “Taken the next step.”
Please join us and help fight the hopelessness that some members of the LGBT community are feeling.
All stories should be submitted to newcivilrightsmovement@gmail.com by September 30, 2010. Attach your photo to the email, preferably in jpg format.
By the way, the official National Coming Out Day is October 11, 2010 for all of us here in the States, however if you are in the U.K., it is October 12, 2010.
Don’t put this off. It’s too important. Someone you don’t know needs your help. This year as we approach National Coming Out Day (NCOD) I’ve had a different... more

In an announcement that will shock many of you — TO YOUR CORE — 41-year-old actor David Yost, who played the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers' Billy Cranston (aka Blue Ranger), has come out. But that's not where the story ends.
Yost says he quit the show because he was harassed over his sexuality. "Creators, producers, writers, directors" all threw the F-word around at him. Yost, whose character was written out in subsequent franchise incarnations, reveals in a lengthy interview that he "walked off set one day in the middle of lunch," a move he had been thinking about for about a week. "Continuing to work in an environment like that is really difficult. I myself was struggling with who I was, or what I was, and to be made fun of on some level, or to be stereotyped, or put into a category … I was continually being told I'm not worthy of where I am because I'm quote-unquote a gay person and I'm not supposed to be an actor and can't be a superhero." His co-stars, Yost says, were beckoned into producers' offices on multiple occasions to be quizzed about his sexuality.
And after leaving the show, everything was swell? No. He spent two years trying to "pray the gay away," had a nervous break down, checked himself into a mental hospital for five weeks, and upon his release he moved to Mexico for a year. "It frustrated me that I hated myself on such a level that I couldn't accept myself."In an announcement that will shock many of you — TO YOUR CORE —... more

Former head of the Republican National Committee and Bush '04 campaign manager Ken Mehlman has finally come out as a gay man. Mehlman broke the "news" to The Atlantic's Mark Ambinder.
Everyone in politics basically suspected/"knew" this for years, but Mehlman says he only came to grips with it personally this year.
"Mehlman's leadership positions in the GOP came at a time when the party was stepping up its anti-gay activities," Ambinder writes, and boy howdy. But Mehlman has decided to become an open advocate for gay marriage, and the moderation of the GOP on gay issues. He participated in a fundraiser for the American Foundation for Equal Rights -- a group supporting the legal challenge to Proposition 8 in California -- last September, and he "has become a de facto strategist for the group," attracting major Republican donors.
"It's taken me 43 years to get comfortable with this part of my life," Mehlman tells Ambinder. Plus he recently moved:
Mehlman said that his formal coming-out process began earlier this year. Over the past several weeks, he has notified former colleagues, including former President Bush. Once he realized that the news would probably leak, he assembled a team of former advisers to help him figure out the best way to harness the publicity generated by the disclosure for the cause of marriage rights. He is worried that some will see his decision to go public as opportunistic. Mehlman recently moved to Chelsea, a gay mecca in New York City.
Hm.
Well, welcome to being on the right side of one issue, Ken. (And this marks another one that Mike Rogers was right about.)Former head of the Republican National Committee and Bush '04 campaign manager... more

X Factor winner Joe McElderry has come out as gay just weeks after he claimed that he was straight.
Earlier this month, pranksters hacked into his Twitter account and posted messages including: "It's been difficult living a lie for so many years…"
Despite denying publicly that he was gay, the incident prompted him to come out to his mother.
Today, on his official website, he said: 'I have always been a very honest person and so it is important for me to continue to be honest.
"It has been the most amazing year so far and I feel so privileged. It’s also been a time of real self realisation and I feel as if I have grown up so much in these few months.
"There has been speculation about my sexuality in the past and I have always been honest at the time I have been asked.
"Over the past few weeks I have really had time to reflect and to realise who I am. I spoke to my friends and family about this in the last few days and it was important to do the same for you all as you have been so supportive.
"I have had nothing but support from you and many of you have been very open in saying that you will continue to support me whatever my sexuality. It is important to me to let you know first, so that you know the stories in the papers are true. I made the choice to speak openly about this.'
He added: "Everything is going well and I’m really happy to be able to move forward from here.
He told The Sun that the Twitter incident was the catalyst for him to realise he is gay: "I think the Twitter thing was the point when I realised I was gay. I'm feeling good about it, it's liberating. Now I can just get on with my life."
McElderry had a girlfriend while at school but was the target of homophobic bullies. "Actually, my feelings have changed," he said. "This is how I feel now."
X Factor judge Simon Cowell has offered McElderry his full support.
McElderry follows in the footsteps of Will Young who came out as gay immediately after winning the precursor to the X Factor, Pop Idol.X Factor winner Joe McElderry has come out as gay just weeks after he claimed that he... more

The internet has been full of rumors and ideas about who would be coming out on the cover of People magazine next week and TMZ has the inside scoop. Country singer Chely Wright, 39, will come out of the closet publicly and announce that she's joining the board of Faith In America.
Wright, who scored a #1 hit with "Single White Female" in 1999 and was the first entertainer to perform in Iraq after the US invasion, is the first popular country singer to come out of the closet. She also has a new book, Like Me, that hits shelves next week and a soon-to-be-released album: Lifted Off the Ground. Sources tell TBP the liner notes for the album will include a list of pro-LGBT resources - including GLSEN, Interfaith Alliance, and Faith In America.
Known as a devout Christian, the close association with Faith In America is a natural fit for the country superstar. "Her life experiences drew her to the work FIA is doing," Mitchell Gold, Faith In America's founder, told me. "She knows this is a big part of the change we need."
Video of Wright's hit plus why her coming out is significant after the jump.

I remember watching the TRL premiere of Livin’ La Vida Loca next to my first “real” girlfriend and trying not to sweat. I’d caught Latin fever.
And yes, I said girlfriend. It happens to the best of us.
It was the summer I transitioned from having a “butt cut” to highlighted (would-be) spikes. I was maybe 14, and bleach-in-a-box aside, hadn’t quite reached the understanding that I was supposed to hate Ricky Martin because my girlfriend thought he was cute. I just hated her instead. After all, he was mine — and as it turns out, I guess I’d have had a better shot with him anyway. (Or at least that guy pictured “exercising” with him does.)
Ricky Martin is gay.
Just typing it makes me feel like every junior varsity footballer from my middle school. It even makes me wonder if they’re congratulating themselves at this very moment for being right about at least two of us. (But then again, who has time to think in between asking customers if they’d like to “Biggie Size” something?)
