− These videos can take many forms and creative directions but there are 2 specific paths you could focus on…
− Emotional Approach - An emotional consumer driven testimonial

− Numerical Approach - A statistical driven PSA focusing on the numerical argument

− As a reminder, our target audience are –
− Communities/Families
− Legislators/ Leaders
− All State may select 4 final videos to use, which will then be aired on-air & online by Current TV and Allstate sites including social media

Update from Allstate:
− Allstate has a long legacy of pushing legislation for safe driving.
− Allstate knows that Stand Up Act Works
− Allstate’s goal is to have graduated licenses for all teenagers where there are restrictions placed on under 18 licenses. All restrictions are removed at 18 years of age when the teenager is granted access to a full license
− Examples: Curfew on driving, limit on the # of people allowed in the car, etc.
− Ideas behind the 2 types of videos
− Emotional – We want to influence people to go to Save 11 online and contact their legislators
− Numerical – We want to inform and educate the community and legislators
− DO NOT PLAY THE BLAME GAME
− We aren’t blaming parents
− Focus on ways to address the issue (teenagers are inexperienced drivers) – Stay focused and positive!
− Make sure to check out Allstate’s website regarding previous videos and additional information - http://allstate.com/standup
Questions:
− Can we use something that is more “hard hitting” than a truthful emotional story? (Testimonial vs. Stats)
− A lot of previous videos done have been based on factual accounts rather than ones that are made up or hypothetical
− Go for a possibility story if you think it will make sense though!
− What are the restrictions again on actors?
− NO UNION ACTORS!
− What do you want the rating/feel of the videos to be? (more or less graphic)
− The video can be shocking, however it shouldn’t cross the line into being disturbing and insulting to consumers
− Make sure to check out previous videos Allstate has done to see where we have drawn the line in the past
− We do want to leave the consumer/audience with an impression and get the message out there, however make sure to keep in mind the thin line between capturing their attention to educate and disturbing them.
− How many videos can we submit?
− We suggest you only send in 1 or 2, so the quality doesn’t suffer.
− What are the copyrights?
− Please reference the terms and conditions. By signing it, you will grant an exclusive license to Current TV and Allstate to use your video in perpetuity.
− Standard or HD?
− While Current TV is a standard channel, we suggest you shot in HD (looks better in the long run.)
− What are the Allstate do(s) and don’t(s) for Allstate?
− This is not about Drunk Driving or other driving influences. Here are some key takeaways from the conference call with Samsung this past Wednesday:
1) Focus on MOBILITY. A major benefit of this product compared to other tablets in the market is its portability. In your VCAM, show people on the move, not sitting around their apartment or at a coffee shop.
2) Don't reference competitive products (or any other companies). Focus your VCAM on what you can do with a GALAXY Tab. Don't talk about other tablet computers (like the iPad), carriers (AT&T, Verizon, etc.), or 3rd-party apps (Yelp, Facebook, etc.).
3) Be creative! Your VCAM can be in any genre: documentary, motion graphics, commercial, adventure, etc. On the call, the Samsung representative gave an example of the wide range of uses for a GALAXY Tab, saying "it could even be used as a ping pong paddle!"
4) The GALAXY Tab has a web browser that is compatible with Adobe Flash, allowing the Tab to show video and interactive elements on the many websites that use this technology. This is another key differentiator.
5) Stay away from violence, overly sexual references or nudity, objectionable language, or religious or political topics.
6) The target consumer for the product are tech enthusiasts in their 20s and 30s who are connected 24/7 and business professionals in their late 30s and 40s with a slight male skew. What’s a VCAM? Here’s the details from our previous blogs:
For those unfamiliar with the concept VCAMs are Viewer Created Ad Messages, and the concept is pretty simple. We partner with sponsors to post assignments for our producer community. Our producers take the guidelines of the assignment, make a commercial, and potentially earn thousands of dollars if their ad gets picked by our sponsor.
In this case, the VCAM assignment was sponsored by HP. They provided our VCAM producer community with assets to use when creating commercials for their new printer, and our producers created advertisements for HP to choose from.
This time around we had a total of 87 submissions. HP narrowed the field to 10 videos, and four of these were selected by HP, earning them each $5000.

If you've been following our posts about the HP Photosmart VCAM winners and wondering how you can get involved and make a VCAM, you should head over and check out our new VCAM assignment for Lexus Hybrid Innovation.
The assignment:
Help us brand the Lexus ‘h’ by shedding light on great achievements. There are two ways to approach your VCAM:
a. Find a creative way to visualize Lexus’ “action speaks louder” philosophy behind the commitment to developing hybrids (‘h’) as outlined above.
b. Profile a person or organization that, just like Lexus, put creative thinking and innovative technology into action, breaking through barriers to achieve something great and unexpected. Demonstrate the alignment between Lexus’ philosophy and your subject.
The deadline to upload your VCAM is February 1st a 12pm (noon) Pacific, so don't delay! Our VCAM team has put together a list of tips to help you get started on your VCAM.

Last August kicked off a VCAM assignment in partnership with HP around their new Photosmart Premium All-In-One printer, with TouchSmart Web.
You're probably asking, "What's a VCAM?" For those unfamiliar with the concept VCAMs are Viewer Created Ad Messages, and the concept is pretty simple. We partner with sponsors to post assignments for our producer community. Our producers take the guidelines of the assignment, make a commercial, and potentially earn thousands of dollars if their ad gets picked by our sponsor.
In this case, the VCAM assignment was sponsored by HP. They provided our VCAM producer community with assets to use when creating commercials for their new printer, and our producers created advertisements for HP to choose from.

Interestingly enough, Mike is an MBA student out of UCLA. He's taken some film courses in junior college, and after hearing about the HP VCAM assignment at an event on campus he decided to produce a commercial. To do so, Mike gathered a team of people from within his network -- each familiar with different areas in the film and television production process. He tells us:
1. We shot 2 commercials in 18 hours and submitted both of them for the contest
2. Our crew consisted of film students, business students, law students, and professionals.
