After the Taliban took control of Kabul in 1996, Sahar Adish fled Afghanistan with her family to find safety in the United States. Sahar, at age 18, speaks powerfully to the courage and aspirations of her parents, her family's struggle for intellectual freedom and educational rights.
"Sahar: Before the Sun" is one of nine short films in the "Beyond Borders: Personal Stories from a Small Planet" series.
What do youth fear most in their lives? How do they overcome those fears? 'Beyond Borders: Personal Stories from a Small Planet' is a creative burst of defiance and hope by teenagers who are overcoming the huge obstacles and ignorance that have defined their lives. Its an inspiring compilation of nine short films written, shot and edited by teenagers who weave documentary filmmaking, animation and archival footage to tell personal stories on fear and security. With mentorship from professional filmmakers, youth produced films that are powerful, startling and awe-inspiring.
With stories from Afghanistan, Argentina, Colombia, England Jordan, Korea, Guatemala, Sierra Leone, Ukraine and the United States, these youth-produced films will challenge audiences to redefine fear and the priorities we make in a post 9/11 world.
It was produced by Austin Haeberle of the Listen Up! Youth Media Network in collaboration with Light House Studio in Charlottesville, VA.After the Taliban took control of Kabul in 1996, Sahar Adish fled... more

With his debut album on the horizon, 22-year-old Something Corporate singer Andrew McMahon expected big things in 2005. Leukemia wasn't one of them.
"Dear Jack" chronicles McMahon on a rollercoaster year, through the highs of recording and releasing a solo album (under the name Jack's Mannequin) and the lows of being diagnosed with leukemia and breaking up with the love of his life.
Using a DV camera Maverick Records bought him to capture the making of his album, Andrew shot everything before and after that crucial day in May of 2005 when he both finished the project and was diagnosed with cancer. The documentary is a raw look at the battle that is leukemia, from spinal taps to radiation, from using a lint brush to remove your hair to infusing someone else's stem cells (in this case, Andrew's sister Kate, coincidently on the exact date his album was released).
The film opens on the day Andrew is diagnosed and follows him through every scary, life-changing and intensely personal event that follows. It also flashes back to his childhood, the making of the Jack's Mannequin album and his collaboration with Tommy Lee, one of the last concerts he played before becoming ill, and his relationships with the two most crucial women of his life, his sister and her best friend.
"Dear Jack" is a breathtakingly emotional film, as well as a testament to family, friends and perhaps more than anyone will ever know, a love of making music. With his debut album on the horizon, 22-year-old Something Corporate singer Andrew... more

Meet Miko Marks: The First African American Woman with Success in Country Music.
This pod is about equal opportunity and female success in today America! It is a pod about social profiling and collective stereotyping. It goes to show how the media and music industry can suppress what people should see.
Stereotyping is a method that people use, consciously or subconsciously, as an efficient way of economizing on information costs.

As a fan of Anime, I've become a fan of J-Pop or Japanse Pop. In doing so, I came across an artist named "hide Matsumoto". After looking in to his work, I found out that he had been dead for several years from an apparent suicide. I decided to look in to it and create a short documentary about the subject. As I began to research, I found out that several young fans had tried to kill themselves when the news of his suicide became public. This is just one look in to a much larger issue of teen suicide that runs rampant in Japan to this day. Please take a few minutes and watch the short and let me know what you think :)As a fan of Anime, I've become a fan of J-Pop or Japanse Pop. In doing so, I came... more

Statement: An avatar is an incarnation of the divine on Earth. As we have adapted this principle to technology, it has become a machine-mediated icon of layered identity, reinforcing personal mythologies and ideals. I will prove the mediation of technology to be one-sided, rendering impossible the transcendence and dissolution of ideals through the act of love.
In this experimental documentary, I explored the phenomenon of online correspondence and our ability to feel emotion through machines. I employed a layered process of remediation, generating animations combined with raw footage, projecting them over live performance and re-enhancing them in yet more post-production. The story is a highly personal narrative, translated into a ?virtually? universal experience of currently burgeoning developments in cyber networking.Statement: An avatar is an incarnation of the divine on Earth. As we have adapted this... more
