Divorce has been in the news lately, specifically following the arrest of an divorced American father who was jailed while attempting to "rescue his children" from his estranged wife in Japan. I put that in quotes only because the concept of right vs. wrong is still very much in question here.
The father, Christopher Savoie, snatched his children while they walked to school with their mother in Japan. He is now in prison for kidnapping, and this is where it gets interesting. In an interview with CNN he states that his ex-wife Norika is actually the real kidnapper.
The issue here is that Japanese law states that custody in divorce cases should be granted to a single parent. Culturally, this typically falls to the mother, and while Christopher's case might be getting press in the US, it's coverage in Japan is actually indicative of the norm -- divorced Japanese fathers typically must fight for the ability to see their children.
"In Japan, nobody thinks it's a problem if a mother takes away her children without consent," said Hideki Tani, a lawyer who has taken on cases of fathers seeking access to their children. "Here, it's common for either parent to completely lose contact with children, but people outside Japan find it outrageous."
Masahiro Yoshida, a 58-year-old musician, is actively fighting to get custody in Japan. His ex-wife, Akemi Kurahashi, is open to granting Yoshida visitation rights, but with some hesitation.
"I will swallow my own feelings if my daughter is happy seeing her dad," she said. "But I still fear he may end up hurting me or her someday."
Today the good folks over at Current Exposed passed me their latest interview with Max and Jason. In the interview, the guys discuss issues of divorce in the US with Douglas Caballero. There are certainly stark contrasts in the way Japan handles custody in divorce cases. Max and Jason's insights reflect some of the thoughts and feelings of children of divorced families in the US, and it added a level of context missing from the Japanese divorce stories. While the cultural decision of granting sole custody to the Mother may be well intentioned, it misses one very crucial aspect -- the wants and needs of the children involved.Divorce has been in the news lately, specifically following the arrest of an divorced... more

Watch a tease of Silversun Pickups behind the scenes at KROQ from Current Music Presents: Embedded, a six part special premiering Wednesday, October 14 at 11/10c.
Silversun's a band close to our hearts—Current has the honor of being their first-ever TV appearance, in a VC2 pod by Embedded senior producer Alex Simmons and Current host Douglas Caballero, It aired back in 2006, when the band was on the brink of putting out their debut, "Carnavas":
They're so big time now they even made Jeopardy:
For Embedded, we rejoined the band as their second album, "Swoon," hit the shelves and the airwaves at KROQ—a station the band's drummer talks about having listened to every day on his way to high school—and prepped songs from "Swoon" to play before a live audience for the first time. It's an offbeat, intimate look at a band solidly stepping into its rock star shoes. (That was me being calm and professional about it. The rock fan in me just wants to say "it's fucking awesome.")
Tune in at 11/10c on Wednesday, October 21 to see Silversun Pickups on Embedded.

Our director Alex Simmons went out to the legendary Glass House in Pomona -- about an hour east of LA -- to see the Silversun Pickups show last night. It was their first SoCal gig promoting the new album, Swoon, out from Dangerbird Records on April 14, and singer Brian Aubert knowingly asked the crowd how many of them were locals -- and how many from Echo Park.
Douglas Cabellero's interview with the band in 2006 was among the first music stories we did here at Current -- back when they were a neighborhood favorite, before they unexpectedly blew the lid off Echo Park & Silverlake's indie rock scene. (See: Rockville, Ca.)
The band will also play Coachella this upcoming Friday. Listen to the full album at MTV's the Leak now and tell us what you think of Swoon at Current.com.

I recently saw on Current TV a request by Douglas Caballero for new/good bands to possibly seek out for Current. Westbound Train has been my favorite band since 2006, and they are a lovely mix of reggae, soul, ska, and a bit of funk. They recently released their 4th album, called 'Come and Get It,' and this is the title track off that album. It shocks me how this band is not more well-known, especially since they are on the roster for this year's Warped Tour. There aren't many good live videos online of Westbound, but this one is pretty good:

Most of us have seen the Daily Fix with Douglas Caballero on Sebastian Tellier. Tellier is absolutely a hero for the French and lately up for consideration anytime you discuss which music artist that is on the rise in the United States. Seriously, from giving strokers to his microphone to riding a horse across a giant naked lady, Tellier inspires us to become a little more lecherous and French. There is no doubt the guy will eventually show up to an awards ceremony with his $#@% hanging out if he hasn't already. This new video, directed by Fleur & Manu, might be the favorite of all the Sexuality videos so far. Most of us have seen the Daily Fix with Douglas Caballero on Sebastian Tellier.... more
