Superheroes aren't just for fiction anymore -- no longer restrained to the pages of comic books, the large and growing community of Real Life Super Heroes (RLSH) are on the streets as agents of change -- with mixed results. No magical-power infused mega-beings, they do what they can to make a difference in home-made costumes, sometimes armed with pseudo-weapons -- as an antidote to the pumped-up versions usually presented in films. And now they've been lovingly captured in a film of their own, the documentary Superheroes, which premiered at Slamdance. Producer Theodore James and director Michael Barnett gave us the low-down on the process, the provenance, and what comes next. Superheroes aren't just for fiction anymore -- no longer restrained to the pages... more

Production has begun on Sam Qualiana's Snow Shark: Ancient Snow Beast in Buffalo, New York. The way this sounds I can totally see this on Syfy or The Asylum in the future, of course along with my Crocaloctopus! Check out the teaser trailer after the jump.
From the Press Release:
Sam Qualiana, a recipient of the Buffalo Screams Horror Film Festival’s “Filmmaker to Watch” award, is the writer-director-cinematographer of this high concept project, which is being played straight; in true Roger Corman fashion, Qualiana had a title, a poster, and even a teaser before he had completed the script.
"I always have had a fear of sharks,” says the 24-year-old filmmaker. “Not a lot of things scare me, but sharks terrify and fascinate me at the same time. I can't go very far into the ocean without turning around, and even swimming in a lake gives me the willies. No other creature has freaked me out so much. Crocodiles never even bothered me, and they can go on land and water. But the thought of a shark on the land seemed like something insane but horrifying to me. It was going to just be a short to re-boot something I had made years ago, but all the buzz and support I got made me turn it into a feature."
Qualiana views his creation as a cross between Jaws and The Thing. The action begins when a team of animal biologists stumbles upon a great discovery that ends in tragedy. Seven years later several locals disappear. In the present a new team of crypto-zoologists seeks the truth behind the legend of the Ancient Snow Beast.
Buffalo has recently become a hot spot for low budget horror films, including Greg Lamberson’s Slime City Massacre (Lamberson recently signed on as a producer of Snow Shark), Emil J. Novak’s zombie anthology Decayed, and Michael O’Hear’s currently lensing vampire drama Dusk. Qualiana and actress Jackey Hall (Chainsaw Cheerleaders, Trick Or Eat) head the Snow Shark cast, which includes a number of actors who appeared in the aforementioned genre flicks: O’Hear, Robert Bozek, Chris Wroblewski, and John Renna, who is also contributing special make-up effects.
"Production has gone smoothly so far,” says Qualiana. “It’s been rough with the cold weather and trying to keep snow out of the camera lens, but we've had a pretty good setup so far to prevent the snow from ruining any shots. I'm hoping to have it filmed before May and ready for the festivals soon after."
Like many other micro-budget filmmakers, Qualiana is attempting to raise his budget through an online fundraising organization. "We have started a fundraiser on Indiegogo.com where we are asking for a goal of $3,000 to put towards helping fund the film. It's a great way to get in touch with other independent filmmakers and fans that want to help support the film even if they can't be around to lend a hand.”

And by crappy let's be clear, I'm not talking about our guilty pleasures (you know those films that we all know are clearly bad for you but love watching 'em anyway) --

Here's a look from the now defunked Zooey Deschanel collection.
Now here’s a story that makes me cringe. Zooey Deschanel, the indie film darling is suing Steve Madden for a couple of million bucks from some sort of celebrity designer deal gone awry. First of all, relax girl, two movies in the can does not make you a Kardashian. And second of all, why isn’t being an indie darling enough for you? Sure, you need more cash…but frankly, to destroy your brand so early in the game…well…I for one would not cast you in anything now that your fashion stripes are showing..a.k.a. willingness to whore yourself. And I use the word “whore” in the most loving way because Steve Madden is a bit downmarket or mass market, if you ask me. And just because you have C-H-A-N-E-L in your last name does not make you a designer. A wanna-be…maybe. The bottom line is, you were selling your name and it all went south. Boo-hoo, Marlene. And wait. Didn’t Zooey just launch a music career like two seconds ago? How could she possibly think that this Steve Madden deal would serve that process? It would give her the lamest cred…as opposed to street. Girl, focus on your acting. Do some television. That should not be beneath you.

"Community" star Joel McHale has been tapped to host the 2011 edition of the Film Independent Spirit Awards on IFC, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"The Soup" host follows two British comedians, Eddie Izzard and Steve Coogan, who were both panned for their respective performances as host. Other past hosts include "The Office's" Rainn Wilson, Samuel L. Jackson, Sarah Silverman, and eccentric filmmaker John Waters.
McHale’s “quick wit, talent and charm makes him a perfect fit for our audiences,” said Film Independent executive director Dawn Hudson in a press release.
Though McHale only has a handful of film credits on his resume (including last year's "The Informant!") the actor/comedian already has several high profile roles lined up for 2011...

The indie film is like the blood that courses through the veins of the horror genre. Every big time horror personality started making little indie flicks (some of which have become classics) so that's why we pay them so much attention around these parts. You never know where the next Romero or Carpenter will come from. That being said one flick we've been keeping an eye is is The Night Shift and now that the movie has wrapped -- it's poster time!
The Night Shift is a supernatural-adventure-comedy about Rue Morgan, the undead night watchman at Pinewood Oaks Cemetery. Rue, along with his buddy Herb, a limbless corpse, spends his nights trying to keep the cemetery’s cantankerous residents in, and his days dreaming of a date with hard-nosed day-shifter, Claire. It’s an okay afterlife until a scourge of supernatural occurrences leaves Rue not only watching the cemetery, but also watching his back!

I ran into Alexia’s project, Adventures in Plymptoons ( a documentary on animator Bill Plympton), on IndieGoGo, where I was amused with her (and Bill’s) total irreverence to anything conservatively morally straight. They have since launched a Kickstarter.com campaign to fund post production of the film.
This was enough to get me to pony up $50 to help her out. We need more indie films like this and as an indie filmmaker I sincerely believe we should all help each other out. What goes around comes around. The bottom line being that if a couple thousand indie filmmakers help each other out that’s enough of an audience right there to launch a film to success. There are easily a few thousand indie filmmakers out there. Something like 5000 to 6000 enter Sundance every year, not to mention thousands of other film festivals. Billions of dollars are spent every year on indie films and only a handful of them ever see the light of day, even when they’re good. We have no one to blame but our collective selves.
Do you really like the crap coming out to the cineplex every week? Wouldn’t you rather see indie films out there? Well do something about it. Put your money where your mouth is. Support indie filmmakers. Buy their films. Demand to see then on OpenIndie.com. Chip in a few bucks at Kickstarter or IndieGoGo. We can do this. It’s a no brainer. Have you seen Ants? You know, that animation with Kevin Spacey as the bad ass grasshopper that controls hundreds of ants with his little gang, until they all realize they have him outnumbered and scare the shit out of him.
Well, we are the ants; we the indie filmmakers. The studios are the thug grasshoppers trying to control us. Why do we put up with their shit?
Alright, so anyway, I checked out Bill’s booth at Comic Com, where Alexia was a guest, and interviewed her, just for kicks. Check it out.I ran into Alexia’s project, Adventures in Plymptoons ( a documentary on... more
