Anyone who says BioShock didn’t need a sequel is a liar. The fact the first game was such a huge success may have been a surprise, but all it really meant was that a follow-up would do just as well, if not better, at retail. Almost as soon as it was announced, BioShock 2 was unfairly tagged with a stigma that it would never live up to the original. Ken Levine stepping away from the project added fuel to the fanboy fire, and it seemed like the sequel’s chances of recreating the magic that was the original BioShock were fading. Even I was afraid this return to Rapture would be end up like the Matrix sequels, where it wouldn’t just be a let down, but it would also tarnish the original. That was, of course, before I got my hands on the actual game. After playing through the story, not only was it clear that 2K has a tremendous amount of love and respect for the franchise, but they’ve also made one hell of a game.Anyone who says BioShock didn’t need a sequel is a liar. When a new title has to follow its predecessor that won twelve Sports Game of the Year awards, expectations will always be high. NHL 10 is burdened with the task of besting last year’s title that brought a glut of innovation to the series. While it is a tough act to follow EA Sports has done just enough to NHL 10 to make NHL 09 fans feel right at home while giving them a new experience on the ice. With little tweaks to gameplay and some added new modes it’s easily a better game than its predecessor. Be wary, however — changes may have fans frustrated with how realistic the game has become. When a new title has to follow its predecessor that won twelve Sports Game of the Year... more

Our first entry in the “Late to the Party Edition” of Crush! Frag! Review! is rather appropriate. You see, for the last five years the rest of the world has followed the adventures of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 while I, myself, only recently started watching Lost. This isn’t the first time I’ve found myself late to the party on some major pop culture event, but curiosity over talks of time travel, smoke monsters and fish biscuits finally got the better of me. I started renting the DVDs a month and a half ago and finally caught up with the end of Season Five last Friday night.
Before I reached that point, however, my sights turned towards the tie-in game – Lost: Via Domus. I received it as a gift from a friend of mine over a year ago. He had come upon the game for free himself and, having no desire to play it, re-gifted it to me. Not being one to turn away free games, it got slotted on my shelf with the vague notion that I would get around to playing it “some day”. Not being a follower of Lost at the time, that day was quite likely to be somewhere in the distant future. But, with my recently born infatuation with the show, it came far sooner than expected.

I’ve been playing Monster Hunter for almost five years now. I had logged in close to three hundred hours (yes, 300) on the original PlayStation 2 version, and only stopped playing it once the first Monster Hunter Freedom was released on the PSP. Since then, counting my transferred save data from Freedom to Freedom 2 and now Unite, I’ve spent close to six hundred hours total with my main character. With all that said, I’m certain predicting my opinion of Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is easy. However, it’s not the fact that I love this series that’s important; it’s the “why” that really matters.

Steampunk – the term conjures to mind images of brass gears and bustled skirts, monocles and machinery, Victorian finery in a head-on collision with mad science on an airship bound for lost civilizations. However, what people sometimes forget is that steampunk encompasses more than just these romantic notions. For every mutton-chopped gentleman explorer questing for adventure or clockwork man searching for what it means to be human there is a grittier, more tarnished side of the cog. That other side is Damnation and, sadly, the tarnish goes more than concept deep.

Savage Entertainment, Hasbro, and Activision are names that will sit in my conscience for years to come, not because Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen for PSP was somehow great, but because it was utter crap. Sure, the boxart’s great and completely misleading, but there is nothing worth justifying the hours of agony spent trying to beat this title.Savage Entertainment, Hasbro, and Activision are names that will sit in my conscience... more

My friend Michelle has done a few game reviews for us lately. She's a gamer, and I am not! I figured it would be much better for all of you to get an idea what these games are really like from someone who knows what they are doing - and who loves to play. Ubisoft is taking us back to the wild West in their latest installment of the Call of Juarez series, Bound in Blood. This PC/PS3/X360 shooter features multiple characters whose stories intersect in a spaghetti Western yarn that spans across North America. It certainly *sounds* awesome, but we want to know how it actually turned out!

I love Telltale Games. I’ve been playing and adoring adventure games since I was old enough to point a mouse and begin navigating complex brain-teasers, but as I grew older and more bothered by the often nonsensical puzzles, the genre quickly faded into obscurity. Cue Telltale’s triumphant arrival on the scene to bring back my once-beloved genre. Even better, they’ve resurrected this stale game type by relying entirely on franchises that we already know and love. True, their attempts to bring Bone and CSI to the world of video games were kind of fumbled, but since then they’ve been on fire with consistent episodic releases for Sam & Max, Strong Bad, and Wallace & Gromit. I’ve enjoyed all of those to varying degrees, especially Sam & Max, so I was not remotely disappointed to hear that Telltale would be handling the revival of the much-loved Monkey Island series.
The result, unfortunately, has left me less satisfied than I’d hoped.

A couple days ago, a friend and I were sitting across the room from each other on two separate computers, both playing Plants vs. Zombies. As the repeating howl of the undead emanated from both of our speakers, I looked over at her and realized that the game was actually making us act quite similar to its green-skinned title characters…er, the zombies, that is. While the evil undead hunger for brains, all I’ve wanted for every moment of my day for weeks now is another long stretch drooling in front of my monitor playing this scarily addictive game.

Few may remember when Fight Night took a step forward to becoming top dog when it comes to boxing games. The one that started it all was Fight Night 2004. This is when EA decided to go away from the standard punching controls and went with the right analog stick controls. Since then every new Fight Night has brought just a little more innovation. Round 2 brought us the EA Cutman mini-game and Round 3 brought us a first glimpse at what next-gen graphics can give us. With EA Chicago closing during the early stages of Round 4 many people feared that it would not be able to live up to the predecessors standards. Thankfully Fight Night Round 4 is an improvement but seeing as it’s been 3 years since the last one, how much of an improvement is it?Few may remember when Fight Night took a step forward to becoming top dog when it... more

It’s Saturday night, I have no date, a 2-liter bottle of Shasta, and my all rush mix tape..It’s time for Space Invaders! Ok that was in the 1970’s, its now 2009 and we have brand new invaders from space but this time they are apparently on acid. Last year, to celebrate Space Invaders 30th anniversary, Taito released a remake of the arcade classic called Space Invaders Extreme. Until now the only way to play the remake was on a Nintendo DS and a Playstation Portable. Taito, with the help of Blackbox, was able to take the successful handheld version and port it over the Xbox 360. Unfortunately something seems to be missing in this XBLA version that just doesn’t give you the same feeling that the handheld titles did. Follow the link for the full review and to check out a hilarious clip for all you Futurama fans out there. It’s Saturday night, I have no date, a 2-liter bottle of Shasta, and my all rush... more

Despite being so hardcore, the Street Fighter franchise is one of those series that appeals to almost everyone based off of nostalgia alone. A few months ago, Capcom finally delivered the latest release in the series, Street Fighter IV. With several months of intense button-mashing and fierce online competition under your belt, we want to know what you think of Street Fighter IV. Is this a major step for the fighting genre? How does it stack up to previous games in the series? And should I suck it up and learn to love Street Fighter despite my serious suckiness? Let us know below with a webcam reply!
