Dancing With the Stars may be halfway through its season run, but the next reality juggernaut is already waiting in the wings.
While Fox itself has yet to formally announce when American Idol will return to the airwaves, USA Today reports that the eighth season will kick off with the freak show that is the audition process in a two-day, four-hour schadenfreude spectacular Jan. 13 and 14.
This time around, Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul—along with the indefatigable Ryan Seacrest—will be joined by new judge Kara DioGuardi when they crush dreams and hopefully unearth a superstar or two while making stops in San Francisco; Phoenix; Salt Lake City; Louisville, Ky.; East Rutherford, N.J.; Kansas City; and, for the first time, Puerto Rico.
Your move, Bergeron. Dancing With the Stars may be halfway through its season run, but the next reality... more

A woman who dated Phil Spector for four years testified Tuesday in his murder retrial that liquor transformed the legendary music producer into "a demon."
Dorothy Melvin, who manages comedian Joan Rivers, told jurors that she enjoyed Spector's company and thought he was "a charmer" when he was "outside of these maniacal episodes."
"But when he's drinking, he loses it and becomes a demon," Melvin said.
But she testified she tolerated his bizarre behavior and that his use of foul language was typical of the entertainment industry, saying "in those days I used it, too."
Melvin is the second of the prosecution's witnesses to testify. A security guard earlier told jurors that Melvin summoned him to eject Spector from two of Rivers' Christmas parties for brandishing a gun.
She corroborated that account Tuesday after the judge permitted her testimony on that point, which she had not mentioned at Spector's first trial.
Spector is being retried on charges of murdering 40-year-old actress Lana Clarkson, who was shot through the mouth in Spector's mansion in 2003. The jury in Spector's first trial deadlocked last year on a 10-2 vote with the majority favoring conviction on second-degree murder.
The defense is alleging that a despondent Clarkson shot herself, while the prosecution is seeking to show Spector has a pattern of violent behavior with women.
Melvin also testified that Spector once chased some young people with a gun because they had mistaken him for actor Dudley Moore.
Prosecutors then played phone messages Spector left for Melvin in which he apologizes for striking her with a gun and chasing her down the driveway of his house with a shotgun in 1993. But he warns: "Be very careful what you say to me because nothing you say is worth your life."
After the incident, she said she saw Spector only in the company of other people.
"I didn't want to be alone with Phil again," she said. "I thought he was dangerous."
Court recessed early to allow jurors to vote in Tuesday's general election.

Amy Winehouse is back home after a brief hospital stint and "doing fine." The same can't be said for her dealers.
A British couple pleaded guilty Friday to supplying drugs to a slew of celebrities, most notably Winehouse, and then selling a video of the Grammy-winning singer smoking crack to a U.K. tabloid.
Johnny Blagrove, 34, and Cara Burton, 22, confessed to supplying cocaine and Ecstasy to the 25-year-old Grammy winner and then secretly filming her getting high and selling the footage to The Sun. The newspaper published images of the "Rehab" star's binge in January.
The video sparked a police raid on the pair's east London home. There, investigators turned up a purported "hit list" of stars, including the troubled R&B belter, for whom they regularly furnished the illicit substances.
Authorities declined to press charges against Winehouse. Amy Winehouse is back home after a brief hospital stint and "doing fine."... more

Anne Hathaway's ex-boyfriend Raffaello Follieri has been sentenced to a four-and-a-half-year prison spell after pleading guilty to 14 counts of wire fraud, conspiracy and money laundering.
The 30-year-old Italian was arrested in June - two weeks after the actress ended their four-year romance - and accused of posing as the Vatican's representative in America, and duping investors into believing the church would sell him property at a discount.
Follieri admitted the charges.
In court, his lawyer claimed he became "intoxicated" by the A-list circles Hathaway moved in, and swindled the money in a bid to keep up the pair's lavish New York lifestyle.
The sentence, handed down in Manhattan federal court on Thursday, is the result of a plea deal, which spares Follieri the maximum possible sentence of 265 years. He agreed not to appeal any sentence less than 63 months in prison.
He also agreed to forfeit money he made illegally, amounting to $2.44m (€3.03m) and a number of valuable items of jewellery.

Many people were stunned by the news last week that Don Cheadle, and not Terrence Howard, would be playing the role of James "Rhodey" Rhodes in "Iron Man 2." None more so, apparently, than Terrence Howard himself.
Howard recently spoke to NPR to promote his first album, "Shine Through It," and the topic of being replaced in the sequel to the hugely popular comic book adaptation came about. And the Oscar-nominated actor sounded as confused as anyone about the rationale behind the change.
"It was the surprise of a lifetime. There was no explanation, [it] just up and vanished. And I read something in the trades that implicated it was about money... but apparently the contracts that we write and sign aren't worth the paper that they're printed on sometimes. And promises aren't kept, and good faith negotiations aren't always held up..."

Republican White House hopeful John McCain will appear as a guest on the CBS ‘Late Show’ with David Letterman this week, after relentless ribbing by the comedian for the candidate’s last-minute cancellation last month amid the financial crisis.
The Arizona senator skipped his appearance on the late night show, telling Letterman he had suspended his presidential campaign so he could immediately return to Washington to participate in the negotiations on a financial bailout package in Congress.
However, McCain ended up staying in New York for another day, drawing repeated blasts by Letterman for standing him up as he tried to fill the empty airtime. To fill some of the show, the comedian discovered footage of McCain getting prepped for an interview with CBS News’ Katie Couric instead of coming on his show.
McCain will appear on Letterman program Thursday Oct. 16, the day after the third and final presidential debate. No word yet on whether McCain will be bringing some sort of peace offering.
